And on the opposite end of that, Bond steals just as much from other franchises, too. They all do it.

Don't count me in that crowd you mentioned - give me a Bond film akin to The Golden Circle over SF 2.0 any day. Different strokes for different folks.

The reason we all "treat" Bond in such a judgmental way is...well...we are on Bond forums, aren't we? We put these films under a microscope unlike any other series, I'd say. Thus, the criticism is going to be much more apparent.

Find yourself, say, a Star Trek or Star Wars-dedicated forum and I bet you'll find the same levels of harsh criticism (and mass levels of love, too).

You are right, a new series does have a lot more to prove to audiences than a mainstay like Bond does. At the same time, that doesn't mean the Bond series needs to stop delivering and/or stop trying to wow audiences.

Then, CGI Paul Walker, as I was speculating, will be coming back for the last one. I'm guessing his wife will be kidnapped at the end of the ninth film, paving the way in for him to come back in the last one in search for Jordana's character.

Are they going to be able to sustain that through a whole new film?
They might. In the seventh film, there were some scenes where body doubles (both the Walker brothers) were used for Paul Walker, his face was taken time to thoroughly adapt and give a realistic look. I would've never noticed. We're four years away from the last F&F film, so I'm guessing they're working on that counterpart. Both the Walker brothers stated that the Brian O'Connor character will return in the future.

In FF7 Paul Walker had recorded most of his lines, who are they getting to do an impression of him or can they computer that too?

@vzok, if they follow through on this horrible idea, I'm assuming it'd be a mixture of pre-recorded lines/dialogue from Walker (sort of like the implementation used to "recreate" Roger Ebert's voice for him after he lost it), and/or using the voices of Walker's brothers (provided they do sound similar. I've no idea).

I hope they keep Johnson to the spin-off and the old crew for FF.

Justin Lin is confirmed to return for the next installment, with Jordana Brewster also returning:

Well.......I am all in for a return of Sam Mendes doing his style of Bond films over this godforsaken CGI-porn that the "Furious"-franchise nowadays is. Justin Lin? My God....that must be the prime example of how you want a "Die Another Day 2.0" if you hire him for Bond.

Didn't Justin Lin direct Fast 5 and Furious 6?

Justin Lin directed Tokyo Drift thru Furious 6..

Given the on-set drama, I'm assuming that's how it's going to go.

Yeah, Dwayne isn’t doing well with Vin Diesel (now they’re cool) and Tyrese Gibson.

Honestly, I thought this all started as some unique marketing for the last installment, but apparently not. Oh well, more money for everyone branching out and doing a spin-off.

There were some guys whose roles were considerably diminished in favor of Hobbs, so there are enough to fill the film without Shaw and Hobbs. And if they keep the level, I see a doubling of the entertainment.

So now there's a animated TV show in the works for Netflix and it's produced by Vin Diesel. It's about Tony Toretto, the teenage cousin of Dominic Toretto, and his friends being recruited by a secret government agency to, “infiltrate an elite racing league serving as a front for a nefarious crime organization bent on world domination.” ... (sigh) okay. This sounds like it could be the equivalent of James Bond Jr.

Do you guys remember when this franchise used to be about awesome cars and street racing? I miss those days.

I am glad Justin Lin is returning.. no offense to the previous two directors - i have respect for both of them, but i just felt like something was missing... part of that might be the sad byproduct of Paul Walker's death.. but i just trust Lin more with this franchise at this point...

my only gripe with the series as it's progressed is that they've lost the "outside the law" "renegade" sort of charm of the main characters, by making them government agents... part of the appeal of this series and main characters was their outlaw lifestyle - they aren't necessarily bad people (outside the first one).. they just get caught up in shit, and must not only get the bad guy, but avoid the cops as well - or in most cases, being blackmailed by the cops/feds in order to do a job... by having them simply being spec ops agents now - i dont know.. it just feels forced, cheap... i also want to see them get back to something more grounded and simple for a story - get us back into that underground street racing culture.. i just feel like the past 3 films they continue to jump the shark - and much like Bond when it gets to those YOLT, MR and DAD levels, I think it's time they should reel it back... something on the scale of the 4th or even 5th film..

I'm curious to see where it goes. I have nothing against cheap knockoffs, but Hobbs & Shaw? I love The Rock but will that be enough?

@DarthDimi it will be directed by David Leitch, the man behind such films as John Wick, Deadpool 2 and Atomic Blonde. Is that better? ;-)

Glad the production is on track for this, I'm really excited to see the fun and craziness from the Fast & Furious series, only with a grounded take from Leitch. Should be a real blast.

Fast & Furious 9 to start production in Spring 2019, as Vin Diesel plans to film xXx 4 in January before moving on to Fast 9.
