SEPTEMBER 2 - THE YOUNGEST PILOT IN THE NAVY
ON SEPTEMBER 2, 1944. George Herbert Walker Bush, the youngest pilot then serving in the U.S. Navy, climbed into a TBM Avenger torpedo bomber, catapulted off the deck of the carrier San Jacinto, and headed toward Chichi Jima, a Japanese island 600 miles south of Tokyo. With him rode two crewmen, radioman Jack Delaney and gunnery officer Ted White. Their target: a Japanese radio installation.

As Bush dove toward the station, black splotches of antiaircraft fire exploded around the Avenger. "Suddenly there was a jolt, as if a massive fist had crunched into the belly of the plane," he later wrote. "Smoke poured into the cockpit, and I could see flamed rippling across the crease of the wing, edging toward the fuel tanks." He managed to unload his bombs on the target and head the Avenger to sea, yelling for his crewmates to bail out. As the aircraft lost altitude, Bush jumped as well, colliding with the plane's tail on the way. He landed bleeding but alive in the water. Delaney and White did not survive--one's parachute failed to open, and the other never made it out of the plane.

Bush climbed into a life raft as Japanese boats sped toward him. U.S. fighter planes drove them back, but currents pushed the raft toward Chichi Jima, where (unbeknownst to Bush) the Japanese had executed and cannibalized American POWs. Using his hands, Bush paddled furiously against the tide.

A few hours later, he saw a periscope break the water's surface, followed by the hull of the sub USS Finback. Within minutes, the downed pilot was safely aboard.

The Navy sent Bush to Hawaii for rest and recovery. But he couldn't sit still while the war raged, especially when he thought of his lost comrades. So the future president cut short his leave and headed back to the San Jacinto to finish his tour of duty.

One of my best friends for the last 15 years killed himself. He messaged me saying he needed help and me being crazy busy with work (putting in 10-15 hours a day, clocking in at 4:30am to dark) forgot to respond. I have been away from the forums for a long time also regarding the lack of Bond news..

I typically have some friends on Facebook and instagram that I keep up with from the forums. Especially TheBondExperience!

    RIP Davy. 1994-2018

Sorry to hear that. I've also lost two friends in the last few years due suicide and drug overdose.

I didn't hear about it until today, but belgian comic book artist Édouard Aidans passed away on september 6th, aged 88. During my childhood, I read his works in the magazine Tintin, from the prehistoric adventures of Tounga to the more modern adventures of Les Franval or Les Panthères. I also had the great honour of being seated next to him during a convention during the 90s, where I had gone to sell the fanzine me and my friends were working on at the time, and struck a conversation with him. Still one of my best memories of that period of my life.

I too read Tounga as a kid, or Tonga as he was known as here. I vaguely remember the Franval Family, too.

Wow! John D.F. Black wrote some of my favorite Hawaii Five-O episodes, including my very favorite one - “Rest in Peace, Somebody”. Of course the show starred our very own Jack Lord!

I read somewhere, that they originally planned to make use of Jay's card-throwing skills in TND, apparently they even shot a scene, where Gupta threw some cards at Bond, but the scene did not make it into the final film.

Past the noise of a whip cracking, I would've loved the inclusion of that - gives another interesting hobby/talent to a henchman, making him stand out more as unique. I believe he even managed to injure Brosnan when showcasing his card throwing talent.
  • A strange coincidence, with all the talk recently about ‘Sudden Impact’ on the movie thread- Sondra Locke passed away today
  • My favorite Sondra Locke role was in 1977’s THE GAUNTLET. I also think it’s Eastwood’s most underrated film. Fantastic entertainment!!

    RIP Sondra.

Strangely she actually died on 3rd November but it's only been reported in the news today, six weeks later.
  • Yeah I noticed that after I posted- I guess so the family could grieve privately? Although one wonders if they just have to 'go through it all over again', now that the public knows.

    I can't question their reasoning I suppose.

    THIS!!!

The only 2 great Dirty Harry films are the first two (love them evenly), the rest are pretty subpar. THE GAUNTLET is head and shoulders above SUDDEN IMPACT. One of the top films of 1977 for me!

P.S. SUDDEN IMPACT has a great score by Lalo Schifrin so I’ll give it that.
