LOL! I like both of those films, but THE GAUNTLET is great.
I think my fave Locke/Clint pairing is the Dirty harry film, though.

Of course 2018 is not finished, they'll surely update this remembrance.

Let’s not forget that she was also in a film that was before it’s time, Eastwood’s great The Outlaw Josey Wales. She has a very low key role , but is very good in it.
Overall, I think this is a better film than the Oscar winning, Unforgiven

That's right! I forgot about Josey Wales. Great film.

TCM does updates for the broadcast version. In 2016, when Debbie Reynolds died suddenly in late December (after Carrie Fisher's death) the network edited the TCM Remembers video on TV. The network then included Debbbie Reynolds in the 2017 video as well.

Thank you! This!! I also prefer HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER and PALE RIDER (all similar films) to UNFORGIVEN.

Hmm, I don’t know if I would put Pale Rider ahead of Unforgiven.

UNFORGIVEN is probably the better film, but I tend to enjoy PALE RIDER, HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER, OUTLAW JOSEY WALES, and HANG EM HIGH more.

One Eastwood western I'd like to see again is JOE KIDD. Been ages.I remember Don Stroud being in that one.

John Mahoney- for me an unknown name, but a very familiar face.
  • UNFORGIVEN just smells too much like Oscar-bait and to me that tends to be a turn-off. Whereas his earlier Westerns were made primarily for entertainment, even if they did have deeper messages. HIGH PLAINS in particular can be a real head trip if you start analyzing it, yet it didn’t feel like they were shooting for an Oscar with that one. Just a well written, well made, and entertaining Western!

Joe Kidd is very under-rated. Great western with a another fine score from Lalo Schifrin!
Robert Duvall is in there too. With a script by Elmore Leonard, I always have fun with it!

I saw, what a shame. I loved Big as a kid, I'd watch that movie all the time. RIP, Penny.

Damn RIP Penny Marshall. I have the LAVERNE & SHIRLEY theme stuck in my head.

I'll have to find some of those DVD seasons. Been ages since I've seen the show.

    RIP
  • re: Penny Marshall...The TCM Remembers video already re-edited to include her. To make room, TCM snipped a clip from Alfie that had followed the still with Lewis Gilbert. The still with Gilbert remains, of course.

Sad news. I know him from a very offbeat episode of Columbo called 'No Time to Die' (1992) where he played the kidnapped bride's father.

Damn, that's terrible to hear, but at least he lived a good, long life. He's done a lot of classics, but he'll always be Garry from John Carpenter's The Thing to me. RIP, Mr. Moffat.

Just rewatched The Thing the other day funnily enough and he's very memorable in it.

Could never fathom out why a member of a research team in the Antarctic would walk around armed with a Magnum!
