I"ve read Kevin Smith's script and besides the obvious Jon Peters inspirations (Polar bears, giant spider) it wasn't awful. It needed work but with a competent director it could have been entertaining. I'll be very interested to read Strick's script because he was the guy Burton brought in

I hope it flops but people will eat up anything like this. Wow, look how dark and emotional it is, it's so original! (sarcasm)

I hated Sucker Punch anyway and although I wasn't really a fan of the character in the first place I was prepared to give this a chance. I ended up really liking Baman Begins when I wasn't a fan at all and the only Batman film I'd seen (Forever) I hated.

But the trailers do nothing for me whatsoever so I probably won't be seeing this.

Why would you hope ANYTHING flops? You can not be a fan of something but give the film a chance. And if you're not willing to do that then just don't say anything. Seriously
  • Man of Steel will rock- but I can't imagine Tim Burton's version with Nic Cage being anything other than a joke

I'm still intrigued by this and unless it gets universally panned will be getting in line, although my most anticipated film of the summer season will be At The Worlds End.

Going dark and emotional is how every franchise is going after TDK even Skyfall was very dark and emotional compared to other bonds. It's just a trend in current blockbusters to reinvent themselves in a darker and more realistic way. Maybe thats why the Avengers that went light and more comical was successful in a way as it stood out from all the other dark blockbusters, most other big blockbusters franchises are going or have gone at the moment to a dark nolan style film .

I hope it flops as well, thus sending the message that a) you don't mess that heavily with the costume, and b) you don't go all angsty, dark & realistic with a character possessing powers of that magnitude. Donner's Superman succeeded because of two things- an amazingly likeable & talented actor and a director willing to let character interaction upstage the comic book action.

It would be hard to fit in with all that power and would the earth really except an all powerful alien we would flip the world would go mad if an all powerful alien appeared so i think it's quiet a good idea IMO.
  • I just don't think the dark thing works very well for Superman. Batman fair enough because he's this vigilante traumatised by the death of his parents. Superman is a flying immortal God alien so I don't think the whole dark emotional angle will work as well. And the dark emotional angle is really, really boring now anyway. I do think the reason Avengers did so well is because it was just a f**k ton of fun which made it stand out.

If I don't think a film deserves to make money then I hope it flops to teach the people who made it a lesson.

Fair enough I haven't seen it yet, so it's a bit early to say I hope it fails. But the trailers and everything have really put me off and I can't say I like what I've seen so far.

I have every right to say if I don't like what I've seen so far. Not everybody shares your opinion on the film. If you don't like that then you shouldn't go onto an internet discussion about it where there's bound to be different views.

If Mad Max isn't out this year then that'll be mine too. I'm intrested to see if they can keep it at the same quality as Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz.

I don't think there's a person on Earth who doesn't love Christopher Reeve- but does that really mean that they should stop making Superman movies? Would you have been that guy back in 1969 bashing the new Bond movie before it even came out? ;)

Regarding whether this movie 'deserves to flop,' my love for the character aside- I really want this to be a huge success for the sake of Henry Cavill-- an actor once dubbed 'the unluckiest man in Hollywood'. He auditioned for and came *this* close to getting the lead in Batman Begins & Casino Royale. I even heard he auditioned for Superman Returns, though I don't know if that's true or not. Basically, I want this to be his big break; I'm rooting for the dude [-O<
  • You never know. If this film flops he might end up as Bond in the future, he came close before.

Man of steel is one of the most anticipated movies of the summer so can't see it flopping tbh.

Not financially. Critically is another issue entirely, something summer movies especially don't have to worry about.

I liked Brandon Routh a lot as Superman, it was just the costume tinkering & poor plot choices that I didn't like, although it seems Superman Returns will look a lot better to me now...

Financially it has a lot of potential particularly in America overseas not so much although avengers and TDRK proved that superhero's can be big overseas. It is so anticipate due to how well receive the most recent trailer was.

Brandon Routh didn't work for me as superman. He was no where near Christopher Reeve's performance as superman.
  • Will wonder woman turn up in the film? Or will it be Batman?

I have a good feeling about Man of steel. My main concern would be how Snyder directs his actors, though with the cast he has hopefully those concerns will be unfounded. I think sucker punch was a pallete to see what Snyder could do with special effects. One thing for certain, Snyder does not pull any punches when it comes to visual spectacle, i think we could be in for something special.

Problem i had with Superman returns is Singer played it too safe with regards to literally remaking the first movie. Also Singer broke too many rules regarding Supermans character. A couple of examples being, Superman stalking Lois and flying around with a chunk of Kryptonite embedded in him. Unforgivable!

I'm excited for Cavill but you know--since they are taking a drastically different direction from Superman Returns, I wouldn't have been against Brandon Routh returning. Have you seen him lately? He's considerably more buff than he was in 2006

With all the problems Superman Returns had, Routh wasn't one of them and I can't help but feel a little bad for him. But of course, SR was meant as a continuation of the Reeve movies (plus Routh resembles Christopher Reeve quite a bit) and since Man of Steel is completely separate from all the movies, in the end it was smart not to bring him back
    Here's a nice new shot!

I posted this a few pages ago, but here it is again without all the word clutter

  • @ Master_Dahark Routh has certainly bulked up, never had a problem with Routh he was given a great role and unfortunately what surrounded that was a miss step. Routh was good as shaw in Chuck, and was amusing in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

I have only seen Cavill in Immortals, admittedly not a great movie though he was the best thing in it. Cavill does raw aggression well from what i saw in Immortals, he think he could bring an explosiveness to his interpretation of Superman which i would be happy to see.

My look at Superman returns : In 2005 the "reboot" craze had begun. Batman Begins (2005) was not only a commercial success but also a critical success. Before that reboots were rare and were not a widely used term. With that success Warner Bros. didn't stop with Batman. They would continue with Superman which they had been trying to get out of production hell for over a decade. Except instead of going all the way back with a new series and origin story like Batman, they decided to continue the original series with a mid-series reboot. The new film is considered a loose sequel ignoring Superman III (1983) and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987) and continuing very loosely from the Richard Donner film Superman: The Movie (1978) and the Richard Lester directed film Superman II (1980) which found Richard Donner getting fired from the film only a couple days into the shoot. The film tries to keep with Donner's spirit alive with this film. So after 28 years since the original does this film deliver? Well it is not without flaws but it is the best Superman film since the original film.

The film opens up with Superman's/Clark Kent's return back to earth after five years since disappearing to find remnants of his home world. When he returns he finds many things have changed like Lois Lane engaged to someone else and has a kid. Meanwhile Lex Luthor has been freed from jail in the wake of Superman's disappearance and has hatch an evil plan that might bring the end of Superman and the world as we know it.

The film has a few surprises up its sleeve. For the most part the film really focuses on Clark Kent and Superman trying to get use to the changes that has happened since he was gone. It explored more of the deeper aspects of Superman and Clark Kent. The film also explores the somewhat bitter relationship between Superman/Clark Kent and Lois Lane who has won a Pulitzer Prize from her piece called "Why the World Doesn't Need Superman." This is the film's best aspect.

However the film's story does have its problems. For most people the problem with it is its 154 min running time but however I disagree completely with that. I think that running time was perfect for the film's story. Where the story's problems is the somewhat cartoony plot of Lex Luthor. Drawing inspiration from the first Superman film, Lex is once again obsessed with land. This time he is creating it using Superman's own technology to make the land that will engulf the United States and start to flood several other continents. For the most part it works but my problem is that of all the plots for Luthor to have I would think they could come up with something more original and smart. I am willing to accept it mostly what takes part on the land that Lex creates which is sports a very emotional battle between him and Superman.

The acting in the film is both good and alright as well. Brandon Routh as Superman and Clark Kent doesn't bring a good performance. He brings a good impersonation of Christopher Reeve. Unlike Christian Bale, Routh doesn't bring anything new to the screen that we haven't already seen. He is good but I would have preferred seeing something new. Kate Bosworth has taken over as Lois Lane and I think she is great for the new direction and bitter attitude. Many fans of the original will not like her because she is very different from Margot Kidder but if you take into consideration of the way the film is done of course she is different and I think someone worthy of stepping into the shoes of Lois Lane. The only problem with her new character direction is that she isn't very happy or upbeat like Margot and that aspect is a little missed. In this film Kevin Spacy has taken over as Lex Luthor and he is incredible in this film. He brings everything Gene Hackman brought and more. Kevin is funny, smart and downright sinister. Dare I say he is better than Gene Hackman? Well I think he is a lot better. The rest of the cast does a fine job on screen as well bringing everything together nicely.

Something I find interesting is that the filmmakers chose Lex Luthor as the villain as oppose to someone else. With today's technology they could create some spectacular fight sequences but opt for a human villain which works for this film. With a sequel (which won't happen) it would be a nice change of pace for a Superman film. Not that I want more flash and less substance but with the marvelous special effects done in the film it is hard not to think about Superman fighting Doomsday on the big screen for a Superman fan. But really in all honesty the effects are very jaw dropping. The best part of it is it is not over used at all. Director Byan Singer finds a nice balance between CGI and Practical effects.

My only other real complaint about this film is one action sequence no matter how cool it was seemed to be just thrown in there just for the sake of having one. It has no relation to the plot at all and seemed to be there so people would not get bored.

So really the film is an all-around great film and helped continue the reboot craze that started with Batman Begins (2005) and continued later in that year with Casino Royale (2006). With the Man of Steel (2013) coming out this year it is sad to see this vision end with just one film but hopefully Zach Snyder does a great job and kicking off the new series with a film that can measure up to this and the original.

If Man of Steel flops it will give Cavill a much greater chance of being Bond although the media will probably go to town on him and write stuff like "flop Superman becomes Bond!"

My guess is Man of Steel will be huge - perhaps the biggest US grosser of 2013. I'm a big fan of Zack Snyder. I loved his adaption of Watchmen. One thing is sure - Man of Steel will look great. Snyder is a very visually orientated director.

MoS is going to be huge and it's going to he a critical hit. My conclusion is based on what I know of the film and I rarely if ever make such bold statements.

As for Routh, he was a good superman but Singer and the script let him down. Trying to make a superman film like a carbon copy of tge Reeve movies was and is foolish. MoS is rightfully approaching this movie as if the Reeve movies don't exist.

IThe only thing I have always thought was stupid about Superman is that he doesn't wear a mask over his face. It's just ridiculous to think that no one would recognise that he's also Clark or vice versa. Wearing glasses is no disguise.

What do you mean, wearing glasses is no disguise? It's how Bond disguised himself from Blofeld in OHMSS, remember? ;)

Seriously, though, I'm looking forward to Man of Steel, although I have a hard time imagining Superman on the big screen without the John Williams music.
