Title Track: DN (I find MR's title track bland)

Title Credits: DN (MR's are ok. But this is the start of the Binder decline. I'm actually a fan of DN's whacky, colourful, energetic dancing dots.)

Main Villain: DN (I really like Drax. I think alongside Scaramanga and Walken he's my favourite Moore-era lead villain. Love his banter with Bond - but DN is top 5 villain for me.)

Main Bond Girl: DN (I don't mind Lois Chiles. I know plenty of people aren't fans - but she's ok. Just ordinary compared to Honeychile Ryder.)

Henchman: DN (If you remove Jaws from MR it takes almost all the silliness out of the film - aside from the Bondola of course)

Overall Plot: DN (I love DN's plot. MR is the third time to the well for Gilbert.)

Dialogue: DN (I enjoy MR's dialogue when Drax and Bond are talking - great one-liners but overall I prefer the tautness of DN's)

Score: MR (wonderful suites from Barry. Lush and epic. Also has my beloved '007 theme' for the final time.)

Settings: DN (I like MR's locations. Yes - even space. But there is something magical for me about the trend setting Jamaica in DN.)

Action: MR (the PTS sequence stunt alone wins this. I even like the fight in the glass museum with Chang.)

Humour: DN (MR's humour is pretty grating. DN's is dry and dark.)

Cinematography: MR (I give this for the European horror feel of Corrine being chased down by hounds. I also like the way the space station is revealed.)

Benign Bizarre: MR (knife throwing corpses, death by hounds, jaws in a giant carnival costume.)

Suspense: DN (I think MR does this very well in certain scenes - hounds killing, shooting down the globes at the end, the centrifuge. But I prefer DN's suspense across the narrative.)

Minor Characters: DN (three blind mice, quarrel, felix all win it over Dolly!)

Glamour: DN (MR has flashes of glamour but can't compete with Bond's introduction scene.)

Bond Performance: DN (along with FRWL - Perhaps my favourite Connery performances wins over Moore. I like elements of Moore's performance here (the centrifuge and his banter with Drax especially) and I think it's the last time where age isn't a visible factor for Roger.)

    DN: 13
    MR: 4

On this forum and in general I go into bat for MR quite often. But it's all relative. Against DN it doesn't stand a chance. Looking back over the categories - suspense and dialogue are the only ones I could tip MR's way if I was being generous.

Title Track: DN - The Bond theme v uninspired lift music? No contest.

Title Credits: DN - With MR we are firmly in Binder's by the numbers era. At least DN's dots have a kinetic energy rather than just repetetive shots of women holding guns and doing somersaults.

Main Villain: DN - Close but everything Drax does Dr No set the template for.

Main Bond Girl: DN - I just want to slap Holly most of the time.

Henchman: MR - Chang is solid and Jaws even watered down with crap moments still has few enjoyable scenes.

Overall Plot: DN - Simple detective story which escalates into preposterous. The same could be said of both but I have to side with the former; grounded in Fleming and not turning up the preposterousness to 11.

Dialogue: DN - Drax has some good banter with Bond but overall DN is just crisper and sharper.

Score: MR - Terrible title track aside Barry strolls this one.

Settings: DN - DN is far more evocative of Jamaica whereas MR just seems to be ticking off the tourist sites, although one cannot deny its epic globetrotting scope.

Action: MR - PTS alone takes this with ease.

Humour: DN - Despite another appearance from Victor Tourjansky MR's childish Carry On gags do get a bit tiresome.

Cinematography: MR - The stuff in Brazil and space is very good.

Benign Bizarre: MR - Metal hands, tarantulas, dragon tanks v metal teeth, anacondas, orchids, space shuttles. Plus the deaths of Corinne and the scientists are quite unnerving given the tone of the rest of the film.

Suspense: Tie - DN a good little thriller but MR pulls off some very tense moments (centrifuge, death of Corinne, shooting the globes) amongst the lunacy.

Minor Characters: DN - Doesn't really have to work too hard to beat Corinne, Franco, Manuela and that gay hotel guy.

Glamour: MR - Strolling down the steps of Concorde to a waiting Roller. Rog pulls it off with aplomb like it's the most normal thing in the world.

Bond Performance: DN - Rog is on fine form but Sean is pretty much flawless here.

    DN: 10
    MR: 6
    Tie: 1

A reasonable effort by MR but much as I love it you're not going to beat DN with double taking pigeons and laser battles I'm afraid.

Interesting. They're only one spot apart in my rankings, but I think DN is better. I suppose I do enjoy MR more, though. Most of its wins here are from the production values, but DN tends to come out on top in the more important categories.

Villain and Bond girl were difficult picks, though. They're portrayed better in DN but I enjoyed them more in MR.

Title Track: DN (the Bond theme of course, but I don't mind MR as a more mellow theme)
Title Credits: DN (I'll take the dot patterns and Jamaican dancers overlaying each other - MR was one of the weaker Binder efforts IMO)
Main Villain: MR (Drax beats No here only due to his longer screen time. Both are great villains with excellent dialogue)
Main Bond Girl: MR (Not sure why I rate Holly higher - perhaps because she's more competent than Honey)
Henchman: MR (only Cha/Chang & Jaws together can beat the excellent Professor Dent)
Overall Plot: MR (DN is nice and simple, but conquering Earth from space is... kind of a big deal)
Dialogue: MR (good dialogue in either film, but Drax has some of the best in the series)
Score: MR (very memorable, nice mixture of uplifting and dramatic music)
Settings: MR (No's spider room/control room are epic, but Drax has the centrifuge trainer/Aztec lair/exhaust chamber/space station)
Action: MR (PTS/Cha fight/cable car antics/space battle, it's all here)
Humour: MR (don't remember much humour in DN)
Cinematography: MR (love Rio's scope from sugarloaf mountain, & Venice - best parts of the film)
Benign Bizarre: MR (lab technician's death, and the fact Drax tries to poison the entire human race)
Suspense: MR (Corrine chased by dogs/shuttle targeting the globes)
Minor Characters: DN (Dent/Quarrel/Miss Taro/Leiter/Sylvia all very good)
Glamour: MR (was going to say DN for Le Cercle and No's glamorous living quarters/dining table, but forgot about Drax' estate. Add Venice to the glamour too)
Bond Performance: DN (not keen on some of his snappy demands, but other than that Sean nailed it with his first film)

    DN: 4
MR: 13 Didn't expect that. I'd probably rate DN a tad higher if I were to rank them.

For me DN is guaranteed three. Dr. No is second only to Goldfinger as a Bond villain, in my view, Honey Rider is easily my favorite Bond Girl, and Connery 's performance is my top choice of the entire franchise.

DN is currently at number four in my Ranking tough for any other film to beat it, I rate MR as my second favorite Moore film currently so it was a good contest.

MR is my favorite Bond film and I fully expect to get bashed for it like usual. But bring it on!

Title Track: MR (Bassey always wins for me)
Title Credits: MR (Space theme makes for one of Binder's last great efforts)
Main Villain: MR (Drax is easily top 3 for me)
Main Bond Girl: MR (Goodhead used to be one of my least favorite Bond girls, but I've gained a new perspective on her, while Honey I just don't care for too much)
Henchman: MR (Jaws is my favorite henchman)
Overall Plot: MR (Ludicrous? Yep. Over the top? Of course. Completely unrealistic? You bet. But sometimes I just love my Bond that way.)
Dialogue: MR (Drax has the best villain lines apart from maybe Kamal Khan. Oh and I think he's attempting re-entry sir)
Score: MR (A Barry belter. Flight into Space is epic, Bond Arrives in Rio is whimsical, and the slower Moonraker theme cues are simply beautiful)
Settings: MR (Rio looks incredible / Sugarloaf mountain has been awe-inspiring since I was a kid. And Space!)
Action: MR (Bond stunts had gone to the next level starting with LALD. This continues in MR with the pre-titles, zero-gravity stunts, and space laser battles)
Humour: MR (Same reasons as Dialogue)
Cinematography: MR (Money is clearly on the screen here, watching this one in 4k is such a treat)
Benign Bizarre: MR (Jaws/Dolly, which legitimately tears me up at the end of the film. While most hate it, I absolutely adore it)
Suspense: MR (Shooting of the globes, waiting til the very last possible moment with the globe entering the atmosphere)
Minor Characters: MR (Lee's last performance as M is great. I love how he shows his trust and confidence in Bond when he and Bond have the inside understanding of him going to Rio after the Minister of Defence calls for him to be removed from the case)
Glamour: MR (Again the money clearly helps here and the chateaux they used for Drax's estate might still be the most incredible mansion/property I've seen)
Bond Performance: MR (Rog is in top stride between TSWLM and MR).

    DN 0
    MR 17

MR is #1 in my rankings while DN has been bouncing around the edge of top 10. But DN itself has been doing poorer in my face to face by the elements scoring, mostly on account of not having the Bond Formula fully identified yet.
