    re: John Calley-Barbara Broccoli

//Here is another article from 2010 which talks about the delay they had then (post-QoS). Note Babs comment on Calley. Interesting, and potentially on account of the Dalton scenario.

    http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/fate-james-bond-hangs-balance-25939//

As noted above, Barbara Broccoli had no use for John Calley, who was the one pushing for a change in casting Bond in the 1990s. (She specifically referred to him as an "a******")

Official announcements sometimes paper over real differences. Albert R. Broccoli denied in a 1987 U.S. television interview that Pierce Brosnan had been signed (when he was). As far as Dalton is concerned, he may have actually decided to exit on his own, but there was definitely a conflict. And Calley's main leverage, as a studio executive, was financing the movie.

    94.

    The year Bond died.

Yeah Bond died in 1994. It's not like straight after that it had a successful relaunch, reaching levels of popularity it hadn't seen in almost twenty years, paving the way for a critically acclaimed reboot that they then built off to end up with a billion dollar blockbuster that was the highest grossing film of all time in the UK.

I think people look back at Cubby's era with rose tinted glasses. The Brosnan and Craig films are flawed. But Cubby made mistakes too. We'd had Bond grabbing a sumo wrestlers arse

What makes you think this is my first time?

Apparently GE got quite poor reviews on release in the US

Interesting point here. And you're on to something. Just have a look at some aggregated critics in here:
    http://www.metacritic.com/movie/goldeneye/critic-reviews

On the whole, on average, "GoldenEye" gets 65% on Metacritic (not that much higher than "SPECTRE"s 60%). And before we start slamming critics again, one could say that in the 1990's the absence of social media made these critics more relevant than today.

So basically one can summarize "GoldenEye" in those critics as: "It's still the good old formula. Nothing special has happened to the character or no drastic reinvention of the character has taken place. Yet after 6 years the revived Bond feels fresh enough". Point being made is this: "GoldenEye" would perhaps not have worked so well if it wasn't for that big 6-year long hiatus. Its freshness works mostly because of that 6-year long hiatus. That gave "GoldenEye" a headstart back in 1995, and also facilitated its evergreen status.

Because solely as a film, as a story, as a rather unique re-invention of the character, I found LTK and TLD much better than GE. Luckily as of today we also mostly agree on the fact that "Casino Royale" is hugely superior to "GoldenEye".

TLD got better reviews on release in the U.S. than GE. If you look back, Dalton was well received by US critics.

Who ended up being the cultural phenomenon again?
  • edited October 2017 Posts: 11,425
Well I will leave that judgement to posterity. Just making the point that the way films are critically received at the time rarely reflects their long term reputation. TLD was very well received by critics but not now widely rated by casual fans. GE got mediocre reviews at the time but has a huge fan following. Just makes you wonder how other 'poorly received' films like SP will be viewed in the future. The views of critics are probably fairly unimportant.

The actor having a fair crack at the whip almost certainly has something to do with it IMO. It doesn't really matter what people think about DC any more. He's been in the role such a long time he is one of the 'Big 4' Bonds in popular imagination now.

Well, yes. DC is already one of the Big Four, as all these four gentlemen came around the right time with the right material given to them to work with in a manner the audience will relate to in their respective period of times and eras.

It might have been said already, but Dennis Gassner will return as Production Designer for B25.

    Original interview (Oct. 3rd): http://www.icgmagazine.com/web/humanity-2-0/

“With franchises,” Gassner adds, “you have to honor the established elements while meeting audience expectations. I’m about to do my fourth James Bond film, and acknowledging the efforts of Ken Adam and others is a big part. But we still need to make it new for ourselves, and on 2049, that meant expanding the poetry that Denis brought.”

Confirmed by MI6 Staff yesterday: https://www.mi6-hq.com/sections/articles/bond-25-october-201-report?t=&s=&id=04319

"In news that can be confirmed, production designer Dennis Gassner, who has been with the Bond franchise since 'Quantum of Solace', let slip to ICG Magazine that he will be working on Bond 25."

Interesting that the director doesn't seem to get a say in this. Or is he on board already?

Don't mind Gassner coming back. He's done a decent enough, if not spectacular job. Frankly, Bond production design hasn't really pushed the enveloped since the days of Ken Adam. It would be nice if they brought in someone with a bit more oomph though. In particular (and I'm not totally sure how involved production designer is in this) I'd like to see better use made of locations. Really feels like Bond has dropped the ball on this front for decades now.

Personally, having seen "Blade Runner 2049", it shows that Gassner really is the Ken Adam of our times. Magnificent how the Wallace-CEO-room looked....be creating a little island surrounded by water. Marvellous. But in a way that's what Gassner didd for SF and SP as well. His clean, modernist design shows again in Blofeld's lair in SP and Silva's lair in SF.

Ok, they 100% have their director now. There is NO way BB and MGW would hire the production designer before hiring the director. (They may have done it in the past, I'm not sure, but there is no way something like this would happen in the Craig era.) And if they have already signed on the director, they are not negotiating with Denis Villeneuve anymore. If they are not negotiating with Denis Villeneuve anymore, then HE IS the director of Bond 25. Otherwise he would have admitted during the BR 2049 press tour that he is not going to direct Bond 25.

    HYPE!!! HYPE!!! HYPE!!!

I'm unclear how Gassner was hired for Quantum (was he Forster's guy or not?). Mendes specified Gassner (at least that's what Mendes said in interviews), but Gassner was already in the fold so that wasn't such a big deal.

#4 is unconfirmed at this point. The rest are true, of course.

EON have always retained services of what they call "The Family" which has seen set designers, writers and cinematographers work with numerous directors after being brought in by one. Like a circle of trust. It is not like making any other movie. If you bring your love to this franchise, the franchise holders acknowledge that by showing loyalty. Quite rightly Directing a Bond film is honour, so to come on board you have to accept certain decision will already be made and that you will be collaborating with people who have already established themselves within the franchise.

AKA this news confirms nothing about Director or intentions.

Gassner's last work on any film was BR2049 (directed by Villeneuve), however he has worked with Mendes 4 times (SP, SF, Jarhead, Road to Perdition). Anyone wants to place a bet on Mendes returning for Bond 25, if there is indeed a hidden meaning behind Gassner being confirmed? ;)

No, it absolutely does confirm a lot. EON won't hire the production designer before hiring the director if they want to hire an A-list director. And they do want to hire an A-list director this time (Villeneuve). I'm not saying Villeneuve is 100% the director of Bond 25, but I am saying this news about Gassner says a LOT about what's going on with the process of selecting the director.

I’ll take that bet @DaltonCraig007 — the man is smart enough to know he doesn’t have another Craig Bond film in him.

Who the director will be? I honestly don’t have a thought on it any more. I just have a feeling it won’t be SM.

Gassner was production designer on 5 films directed by the Coen Brothers, so why not put them in the mix too? :) I mean, if EON absolutely want a A-list director, why not hire some who actually won the Oscar for Best Director? ;)
