Jan 2016 is horrible. Make it Xmas 2015 and I'd be far happier.
But not as happy as Oct/Nov. 2015.

Which, in just an on-paper (not via actual months or numbers) stance, would make it another four year gap, so Craig will have done two Bond films in just about eight years time.

However, it wouldn't release in January, that's the month dumped for generic comedies and action films. Almost anything released then does poorly, so it won't be seen then. I'd say December 2015 at the latest.

I just popped open the sangria early. Yep.
Surely they can still have it released by Xmas 2015. It is still at least possible.

You are right, Creasy; a Xmas release is favorable and then the next most favorable is summer, but bond has not been released in summer in years.

@4EverBonded, but, that now means that Bond would be going toe-to-toe with the new 'Mission: Impossible' film, which could be a problem, given the popularity of 'Ghost Protocol.'
  • edited June 2014 Posts: 6,601
Before they put it into some unfavourable slot, they should wait till summer. 2 months might not be 2 months as of 8 weeks, it could just mean not somewhere in October but early December shooting - then it MIGHT still be possible to go for the planned October release.

I don't feel Mission is a problem either.

Nope. I don't see that as a huge problem (MI). I see releasing it later than Xmas is a big problem. Bond can handle some competition, especially coming after Skyfall. Although the longer the wait is, that lessens.

I think they can still do it. Get the first locale figured out for sure and start shooting.

I don't see why it wouldn't work Summer 2016. I think it may fare better then than going against another beloved spy franchise. Another four year wait won't really decrease its possibility of maxing out at the box office, as SF so amply demonstrated.

I'd see it as a blockbuster summer hit, yes - but that goes against the grain for releasing Bond films; I don't think they would want to do that, just based on their history of releases.

Quality IS for sure what matters. Whether it is Xmas 2015, fall 2016, or whenever. But yeah, it is not a happy wait for us. Skyfall amply demonstrated a lot of things; I am not overly worried, just complaining because I really want to see this at the latest by Xmas 2015.

The later they put it, the lesser is the chance of 25 being with DC.

That too, GL. I really want Craig to have at least 5 films. He is a great Bond.

I'm not worried about the delayed filming at all. Don't forget that the filming on CR didn't start until February 2006! There is no reason to think the release date of Bond 24 will be pushed back.

What I'm worried about is EON hiring Purwis & Wade. Logan had 2 year to write the goddamn script! 2 years! Why on Earth was EON letting him working on side projects like Penny Dreadful (a TV show nobody cares about)? They should hire people who are 100% committed to Bond.

They main reason some Bond films are ending up terrible is that the producers don't hire writers to work on the next film immediately once a Bond film is released. Script problems 20 months after the release of Skyfall? How could they let this situation happen?
  • edited June 2014 Posts: 6,601
That will teach them NOT to hire people (Mendes, Logan) who are doing all sorts of things besides Bond during the period. Not worth it. But if the release date remains, I am not THAT bothered. This date is my main concern.
I suppose, Logans script was just too dark. To give it a lighter touch is a good thing, just why only now?
DC said in the SF promos, they/ he were happy to bring back the lighter touch, so how could that not be in the script from the beginning? IF my assumption is indeed right, which might not be the case.

I see no reason to be upset for the script. How Logan would be able to write the memorable and iconic action sequences that define a Bond film was a big question from the beginning.

Now, he most probably has delivered a script that is character-driven, makes use of M, Q and Moneypenny, taking an open-minded approach with the advantage of fresh actors in the roles, and has good dialogue. Now, the only bit missing is the "oomph-factor" of 2 or 3 action highlights.

In come the men who proved repeatedly that this is what they really are good at, P&W. I give them advance credit based on their more recent work with the more realistic Craig-Bond. The cranes, car accident and sinking house in CR were top notch, the car and roof chases in QoS were great (but butchered in the cutting room), and do I even need to mention the train scene and helicopter attack in SF? They know their business, and I am glad they are back.

And if in 10 year's time we look back at another great Bond film, B24, who cares if it had to compete with other action films during the christmas period or was delayed for a few months? Go on, P&W, put the punch into this script!

    This is disappointing news.

The departure of Purvis and Wade was one of the few reasons that my faith was briefly rekindled in the Bond franchise. They have been writing the series since 1999. Purvis and Wade openly admitted in multiple Skyfall interviews that they were completely "out of ideas" with the James Bond character and were creatively tired of the Bond franchise as a whole.

And now... They have returned. Will the franchise ever be free of them...? The thought of Purvis and Wade scripting or even rewriting more Bond films for twenty years isn't very appealing.

All good - but as mentioned before, HOW COME a few adds here and there make for a 2 months delay?

@ strelik - from the recent posts here, I agree, maybe they were not clown after all. Logan is no writing god, you know.

OK, I've just been in touch with Sandy.
(By the way, this website was inaccessible for many minutes; just finally got back on.)
She is super busy, but here are her comments to me regarding the script news and she said I could share it with you as she does not have time right now to come to our forum.

    Sandy says:

I don't like the delay but concerning the script writing I'm not at all scared by this!

I always found it unfair that P&W were found guilty of all the sins of past Bond films. From what I understand most truly terrible things in DAD for example were not his fault but the director's. I think Paul Haggis is not as brilliant as people think, some of the things he wanted for QoS (that led to the delay in script writing) were horrible, like Vesper being pregnant or having a child, something like that (can't remember exactly). Also I think some of the cheesiest things in CR were his doing.

If the producers were not satisfied with Logan's work then by all means bring someone else. The producers have more experience than anyone else by the end of the day. I personally did not like at all that he was pushing the 2-story arc thing and was very glad when Mendes dropped it.

    ******
    Back to me now.

I totally did not remember that Haggis was responsible for the Bond having a child with Vesper storyline that thankfully did not come to fruition. Shudder!

I'm just wondering if the delay could in part be down to the possible over run on Star Wars at Pinewood. Assuming that Pinewood is booked for B24 filming.

But they can also start the location shooting before the main actors.
OK, I'll try to remind myself Casino Royale did not start shooting until early February ...

And yes, GL, Sandy is fine. Work is going great for her is all, keeping her quite busy (writing and submitting her article).

    I feel about the same.
The only reason I can imagine why Eon hired Logan full time is that they were happy with his take on character development. Why that quote from Baz mentions the dialogue between Bond and his entourage is beyond me, as I thought dialogue is one other big reason a writer (i.e. Logan) is chosen?

As for a delay of shooting, Bond films shot under pressure have usually turned out great (easy for me to say that, since I also love QOS ;-) ).

Does this mean, that Logan is pissed and sorta out, because they had artistic controverse? Sounds like it to me now.

Also - will they be WILLING to put it out in December? I am really, really pissed now myself.

That's the feeling I got when I first read the interview. So, the producers did step in then...and maybe Mendes as well.

I fully agree with Sandy and yet, out of the millions of possible screenwriters, why must they use Purvis and Wade? Re-watch their (numerous) Skyfall interviews: They publicly declared they were growing fatigued with the franchise and were having trouble coming up with any fresh ideas for Bond. They were blunt about their creative malaise, and their utter boredom with the Bond franchise was made readily apparent in each interview. They didn't want to come back.

It's strange how many forum posters are willfully forgetting all of those extremely candid "thank god, we're finally moving on from Bond" interviews given by P&W. The duo made it very clear they didn't want to ever return to Bond and wanted to pursue other things.

The reality is that, in March, Purvis and Wade's Barbarella project stalled at Amazon Studios. Their show has been conspicuously absent from Amazon's scheduled line-ups for 2014 and 2015. If Barbarella hadn't stalled, Purvis and Wade wouldn't have returned for Bond 24. If you watch -any- of their Skyfall interviews, they were adamant that they hoped their other projects would succeed as they did not want to return to Bond. It's a bit sad that necessity forces them to do otherwise.

Again, it's odd that anyone would rejoice over the return of two writers who openly declared their tedium with the character/franchise. There is a host of other talented "action" screenwriters with fresh ideas that could be hired to "punch up" the Bond 24 script. New blood would have been nice.

I didn't read the interview or see it; maybe that was their way of sort of gracefully dealing with the fact that they did not return to do Skyfall ...

Yes, I believe, it was easier for them like this. They DO know their Bond and they were co-writing for a long time. Obviously ONE writer is not enough for Bond - for whatever reason.
Why not getting others? Maybe those, who could be be chosen, were busy on this short notice. But its not, that there is a non existant script.

I always thaught there step a side because with step a side of Judi Dench mother story line and there give there needed information to Michael G Wilson and John Logan. But iam worried too also about Logan and hoped on a writer to help him.

The script can be finalized and done with quality. Surely they are not rewriting from scratch, no. I think it just upsets us at first because time-wise, surely most of us thought it was done by now, with no major problems since we had not heard anything. But somebody can come in and polish it, yes; that happens in the industry so often, that is not a worry.

So I have heard, it just SEEMS strange, that polishing bits here and there would take that much time. Only if it makes a difference in location and action, it makes sense to me. But I gladly listen to those, who know better. I am just nitpicking along unknown (to me) lines.
