Funny, I think it's underrated, and in some ways more impressive than TSWLM as a stunt. Of course, the Jaws tag is abysmal.

Agreed on the stunt. I think it's more impressive and riveting than the Asgaard jump. And I don't even mind Jaws flying into the circus tent because it allows for a visually striking segue into the titles.

I hope you're joking. That bit has aged HORRIBLY.

I too will jump on the MR bandwagon. While I wouldn't say it tops Asgaard, for me, it is indeed a riveting, thrilling opening. It makes the free-fall sequence in QOS look comparably terrible.

It does. At least in the MR sequence it looks as if people ACTUALLY jumped out of a plane and did all that struggling in mid air for real.

The jaws bit afterwards though is admittedly pretty terrible. How could Bond even miss Jaws in a small plane like that?

GF PTS overrated?? I just can't agree to that. Barry's Bond back in action theme alone makes the PTS deserving of all the glory it gets.

Nah the Goldfinger PTS is classic. Tongue in cheek, punchy and relitively short. Connery's confidence, cool aura and timing is the icing on the cake

Nope. I'm quite serious. And I don't think aging is the issue. I think most people consider it silly, and they would have considered it silly in 1979, too.

IMO, that's every bit as goofy as Jaws flying in MR's PTS.

The humour in the GF PTS isn't as "in your face" though. Yes it's silly but it's a bit more understated. In the GF PTS I can still keep a straight face and not cringe/sigh.

Exactly. It's not like Bond is wearing the duck on his head for the whole PTS.

Yeah. With GF it's a case of him "blending into the surroundings", hence it's not as cringe inducing as someone trying to fly. Despite its ludicrousness there's a logic.

Surely it should be about the whole of the PTS, not just a stunt. As such MR's PTS is very overrated a garbled mess with a stupid ending. But then it was just telling us what utter drivel was to follow.

Well the stunt is about 90 percent of the PTS, so yes, it is almost all about the stunt. And it is hardly overrated. Few fans like it, almost everybody despises it. IMO, it's actually underrated.

PTS is about 5:56 long, stunt is about 2:14 (give or take on each), now my maths has never been too good, but I recon that is less than 50%. Sorry for being a pedant.

Most Overrated Bond Film: Die Another Day, Skyfall and Casino Royale. DAD be over promoted, Skyfall litle bit les promoted then DAD (what be good thing!) but there overrated the movie the close as with CR. CR be les promoted then Twine, but the promotion it get be over-rated and in specialy Daniel Craig and the violence/there happend to much is under-rated. The other way around of Skyfall where there almoost happend nothing.
Most Overrated Title Track: Skyfall. Positive, it be the moost populair song who be very good too. With Madonna it whas negatief and it be the name/performer Madonna who be overrated (like the whole movie) not in specialy her song.
    Most Overrated Title Credits: Goldfinger
Most Overrated PTS: FRWL/Twine. The boat chase of Twine wil always be remember of postive over-rated as for example Eifel Tower Jump from AVTAK or Ski Chase in TSWLM. FRWL i see more over-rated by fans. The PTS from Moonraker is earlier under-rated, then over-rated.
    Most Overrated Score: Yolt
Most Overrated Villain: Silva (Skyfall) and Goldfinger
Most Overrated Ally: Q. With return of Quatermaster in Skyfall, talk about the gadget man is back. Together with Adele/Skyfall song i think Q whas moost discus in Skyfall promotion and it be big contrubution of boxoffice succes.
Most Overrated Bond Girl: Vesper (Casino Royale) and Severine (Skyfall)
Most Overrated Minor Character: Eve (Skyfall)
Most Overrated Henchman: Jaws (TSWLM)/Oddjob (Goldfinger)

Most overrated PTS: TWINE. Even people who dislike the movie usually say the PTS was brilliant. I may be the only person I know who finds it overlong and not that exciting. As an action sequence, it may be good, but as a PTS it is overblown and utterly inefficient. And I do like TWINE.
  • I dislike the PTS fairly intensely, Lud. Patrick Malahide does a great job as Lachaise, and the conclusion with Cigar Girl in the balloon is also quite good, but the rest is a tedious mess. The PTS immediately convolutes the plot, and the boat chase is the last word in generic, Brosnan-era action soporifics. I actually consider the PTS one of the chief weakness of TWINE, itself a weak Bond film.

Yes, but so many people seem to love it. I don't find TWiNE that great, but not nearly as bad as many people seem to consider it. I like it less since Michael Apted's arrogant interview, when he said Elektra was the first credible female villain. But I digress. The PTS was overlong and it is by far the epitome of overrated imo.

This thread is not only fun, but almost serves as a carthasis for ones soul. I've been waiting to get the following points off my chest!

    Most Overrated Bond Film:
Goldeneye - What impresses me most about this film is the minor cast, and overall concept. I don’t find the plot to be anything special though, and the actions scenes are generally quite generic (I’ll explain more about that later). And amidst all the colourful supporting characters, we have what is in my opinion one of the weaker Bond performances. I don’t dislike Brosnan, and I think he came more into his own in the next two films, but here I find his performance quite bland and forced. Beans performance is better, but he never gets to do anything special as a villain, and it’s somewhat of a disappointment that what could have been an epic encounter between two 00s, in the end only boils down to a fight scene and some melodramatic quarreling.

    Most Overrated Title Track:
AVTAK, Duran Duran – There are worse songs, but this one is not nearly as iconic as some claim it to bee, and boy is it dated in the 80s.

    Most Overrated Title Credits:
Goldeneye – Just because better computer technology was used, that in itself doesn’t make this credit stand out. The theme and concept is again good, but it ends up looking sterile.

    Most Overrated PTS:
Octopussy – This PTS gets a lot of praise, but up until the short plane stunt, it’s not really that memorable.

    Most Overrated Score:
Thunderball – I love John Barry, but this wasn’t his greatest work. The score is so big and grand that it almost feels slow and dragging.

    Most Overrated Villain:
Alec Trevelyan – As I’ve already mentioned, Beans performance is ok. But his limited contribution (does he ever do something really memorable?), the pretentious, overstated dialogue he has to say and the general feeling of lost potential, makes this character not live up the hype from all the GE fanboys.

    Most Overrated Ally:
Felix Leiter, Goldfinger – This guy is just bland, and one of the few rotten apples in an otherwise strong cast.

    Most Overrated Bond Girl:
Major Armasova – This character has a huge fan base, but is actually quite a disappointment. We have to be told that this girl is intelligent and can kick ass, we never really see it. In the end she comes off as just another helpless damsel, and her performance is as bad as any of the worst bond girls'.

    Most Overrated Henchman:
Jaws – A good concept and a good performance, but the insistence on turning him into a clumsy buffoon hampers what could have been an iconic character. And that’s the case in TSWLM as well as in MR.

And allow me to include a new criteria:

    Most overrated action set piece:
Tank Chase, Goldeneye - Pointless destruction and no real sense of danger doesn't make for a great action scene IMO. What harm can happen to Bond when he's sitting in a tank?

Well, what can I say. English is not my first language, and there are probably more mistakes to be found.
