SPECTRE: TOP 5 elements "SPECTRE" must have to tackle all criticism that surrounded "SKYFALL"

Comments

  • 1. The gunbarrel opening (from now on) at the beginning of the film.
    2. Traditional scene of Bond reporting to Universal Exports/MI6 to tease Monneypenny and get his assignment from M.
    3. I can handle Craig skiing, just as long as the filmmakers don't go old school and have him swiveling on a set with a lame snowy backdrop moving behind him!
    4. Perhaps a scene where Bond again visits Tracy's grave, and perhaps even talks to her. Probably won't happen, though. It was done so well at the opening of FYEO.
    5. Spectre's triumphant return after a 'hostile takeover' of Quantum. Blofeld steps from the shadows to again do what he does best: worldwide extortion.
    6. The return of Felix Leiter.
    7. At some point (and whoever the composer is at the time) drop in a salute to John Barry and play Barry's special 007 theme during either an action or daring escape scene.

I love when Bond goes into his rooms in DN and FRWL most notably and searches for bugs of any sort. That was seen a tad again farther down the line in OHMSS where Bond checks his room while at Piz Gloria, but it isn't in the films close to enough. Just to see a few seconds of Dan's Bond looking around and rummaging through the room for bugs or traps would be spectacular.
Exactly. I miss that, as they're not actions specific to the mission, but rather something a spy would do just out of habit. Also, I'd like to see Bond scan around a bit when he enters a crowded room, and see how he sets up an escape plan.

He did a bit of that in Skyfall at the Macau casino.

You beat me to it; I was just going to mention this.

One of the things that I love about CR is how Bond has to do some detective work to figure out what "ellipsis" is and how everything about it ties in to the bombmaker and his role in the larger plan. Would love to see that kind of "detective work" in Bond 24.

@thelordflasheart, I quite enjoyed that, too. Rewatched it yesterday, and I love how he traced it from Mollaka's phone to M's computer to the security office at the resort in Nassau, and tracked Dimitrios all the way to his place. I wouldn't mind seeing more of this. Everything was pretty much laid out for him in SF.

How would you campare CR with Skyfall ?

Well, they're very different films, aren't they? I mean they have similarities - both feature great cinematography, visually interesting approaches to scenes, great character work, a nicely subdued sense of humour, and fantastic performances. To me there are three main differences - SF has some more of the classic elements than CR does, or at least in more recognizable form. CR has a romance, which makes it a bit more fun and engaging than SF. And finally there's a bit more of a "wish fulfillment" element to CR which means that people would rather *be* Bond in that film - it's great to see him claw his way back to top form in SF but that's more of a "rooting for him" feeling than wanting to be him (all of these are assumptions for the general audience).

They're both fantastic films so it's a bit like sushi and chocolate - I love them both equally even though they're so different. CR wins on the "fun" aspect, but I think that SF has more lines and moments that will be seen as iconic years down the line. I'd rate them nearly equally as good.

Damn ! Couldn't have said it better myself.

It actually comes down to what you preffer. If you have an eye for the more traditional Bond Skyfall would satisfy with the nods here and there or if you are just looking for an engaging story and some fun CR is for you.

    1. I agree, gun barrel back
    2. Good script, and good one liners
    3. A decent music score
    4. I agree, a Ken Adam kind of set
    5. Proper Bond girl, not doubling as Moneypenny!

I'd also like a shot of Bonds plane landing after the briefing with M a la DN, FRWL and GE. Its only a little thing and I dont know why it works but it always gets me more excited as Bond is fired off to the other side of the world to cause some mayhem.

I love shots like that too. And in DN, FRWL and GF (to name a few) it was actually necessary to show it since it was connected to the ongoing plot, making it all the better.

Keep posting your TOP 5 ;-). I truly hope 'Bond 24' will be a winter-Bond film. My keywords: Snow, Skiing, Alps, Formula 1 racing ('Grand Prix', 'Iron Man 2'), SPECTRE, Blofeld, Middle East, Dubai, Uniting Middle East in orthodox-muslim way.

I seriously doubt Micolli are conceiving B24 based upon the scant criticism visited upon SF. On the contrary, they will probably attempt to repackage what made SF so successful in B24.

Not sure what you mean. I've said on numerous occasions it is time to bring a revived, more dangerous, more secretive Blofeld back. One that has never contact with 007 in the film. So perhaps a Largo-like villain is needed. But all should be done by taking into account current day global politics. Could be nice to hear Blofeld saying he already used some of Silva's hacking services, no?

Also, 'repackaging' meant with Daniel Craig: Reviving Bond completely, reviving 'M', 'Q', Moneypenny completely. Now time to revive Bond's own iconic antagonist: Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Period. By the way, I can recall screenplay writer John Logan was already hinting to that in 2011.

Who will they kill off this time then? I feel Vesper, Mathis and M were enough.
  • 1. Bring back the gun barrel at the beginning, I've had enough experimentation after 3 films. The gun barrel has always signified that THIS is a Bond film, and immediately separates it from it's competition.

    2. Have the lead Bond girl survive with Bond in the end. I understood Vesper, hell I even understood Camille, but killing off Marlohe, nope, don't agree with the rationale on killing Severine no matter what Mendes nor the writers have to say.

    3. Bring back QUANTUM and Leiter. Start giving us some details on their agenda as well as introduce or at least hint at who is in charge. Blofeld and SPECTRE were reduced to idiocy and I don't favor their return out of some sense of nostalgia, QUANTUM will be just fine and could be even better if correctly written.

    4. Sign Tim Curry as the lead villain, whatever he wants pay him, he's worth every penny.

    5. Have a wild PTS or finale using some brand new technology. They've gotten away from this in recent years and it's time to up the action quotient and remind the world that there is Bond and then there is the rest.

Benedict Cumberbatch as the villain and Idris Elba or Richard Armitage as the henchman! Better still have them all in it! :-bd

There's sometimes no rationale in killing. Understanding Silva's psychotic character mind explain some rationale in why Severine was killed the way she was killed. The same with Scaramanga killing off Andrea Anders during a boxing match. Or throwing a woman in a pool full of sharks. This is, if you ask me, 100% Bond.

    1. the gun barrel sequence is iconic with the image of Bond in providing the starting kick for a viewer that he is watching a Bond movie. Unfortunately The Daniel Craig's Bond movies did not have this stamp resulting in a bit of disappointment
    2. It is better to replace Daniel Craig now, as he was visibly aging in Skyfall. A Handsome hero with the charisma of Connery with a height of 6'2" fitting the tuxedo
    3. Bond theme music by John Barry
    4. A Villain with a Cat
    5. Gadgets

Eon does have the rights to Spectre and Blofeld.

All I can say is that after two top MI6 agents finally confront each other after an amazing test of wits and cunning and it's settled when one of them stabs the other in the back, just give me a classic 60's Bond with all the trimmings and I'll be happy.

In QoS, the agent killed by 007 at the opera was at one time in the development 003, there were even props made announcing 003's death that can be seen in the 007 Barbican Museum display.

    1. Get rid of the psychobabble and the political correctness.
    2. Get a real writer like Christopher Hampton to do the screenplay.
    3. Get back to Fleming - This cannot be emphasized more!!!!!
    4. Get a real Bond woman.
    5. Get a real villain.

Macau mis something comes closer to:

People complane bout QOS scee's are to short, but this also count for Macau.

This part of Shanghai in Skyfall have it a bit more, whyle i think it can inprove a bit.

Mabey next time there can try something like this kind of vibe:

But Skyfall is far from what i see as example/basic for the next movie (or 2). More like QOS, Yolt, LALD/TMWTGG, TMND and OHMSS. Elements who be used earlier in TMND, Harry Potter and X-men.

    Remember X-men

    1. GB at the start
    2. Bond flirting with Moneypenny
    3. David Arnold score
    4. Quantum becoming SPECTRE over the course of the film
    5. Skiing sequence
    6. Some Q gadgets (a realistic watch gadget, for example)
    7. Make it a semi-adaption of Fleming's LaLD, with Bond investigating Quantum's looting of a lost pirate horde. End the story in Jamaica with some big, slightly OTT action climax.
    8. Keep Craig's humour balanced. It was perfect in SF and he pulled it off well.
    9. A memorable henchman/villain duo.
    10. MI6 staff (M, Tanner, etc.) present in early scenes and maybe short briefings in the middle of the film but that's it.
    11. Craig ending up with a girl on a boat at the very end.
    12. Exciting PTS ala SF or TND. Craig is shagging some chick in a European city when he gets a Quantum lead and chase ensues.
13.Plot focused on some low key, but devastating, terrorist attack. Nothing that can be construed as "taking over the world" but where millions of people are at risk. Or maybe another YOLT/TSWLM/TND-starting-WWIII-esque scenario funded by pirate gold.
    14. Ample use of the Bond theme (with Arnold scoring, it's a guarantee anyway).
    15. A menacing dinner scene with the villain that shows off the cultured side of Craig's Bond.
    16. Aston Martin as the main car. If it were to have gadgets, keep them to a minimum and the chase scene focused on Bond's reckless driving style and not necessarily on his propensity of using gadgets as an easy way out.
    17. Keep with the brutal Craig fights. Maybe one where Bond is unarmed and essentially has to kick some serious ass to escape. Craig stays cool though and you just know that he doesn't give a f*$k; he'll beat up anyone in his way.
    18. Finally, some cool one-liners (again, I thought Craig excelled with them in SF). A cool, brutal main villain death followed by some funny posthumous comment. Craig's Bond doesn't give a f*$k.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is my ideal Bond film.

Assuming a great script, director, and cinematographer (that goes without saying, really, as most important ...)

    For Bond 24 ~ My top 6:

    1. Some awesome winter and ski scenes
    2. Main Bond girl survives and is with Bond at the end of the film
    3. Great villain
    4. Great, relevant, memorable music
    5. Fun interplay with Moneypenny and good interaction with M
    6. Leiter back in a slightly more substantial way (Wright)

    1. More Mystery and Suspense
    2. A Fleming title everyone wants elements from the novels in the film but when you start asking for titles suddenly it's "scraping from the bottom of the barrel" the man created 007 his titles should be used.
    3. more interesting action (the free running chase in Royale is what I am looking for)
    4. a stealth based sequence similar to Bond snooping around in thunderball
    5. An attractive smart and classy American Bond girl (mission impossible and bourne legacy both had them why can't bond have one)

Rachel Weisz is English, not American...

Though, I love Paula Patton in MIGP.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Leiter. Give Wright a cameo or maybe an extended role. Also, something I just thought of, I'd like to see some innovative, imaginative technology. Something in the vein of FRWL's car phone or GF's bulletproof vest. Something that sets attend without going too far (invisible car, anyone?).

    That is f**king genius.

It so disheartening when you slave away on here trying to come up with witty bons mots in an attempt to entertain only to be blown away by the kind of comedy greatness that only legalised cannabis can produce.
