These images are unbelievable and cool. Still going through them all. I really love that darker shot of Bond emerging from the trees as Honey pulls her knife.

I like the contrast between these two pics and I think it shows how good an actress Lotte Lenya was. She certainly wasn't the toad-like creature that Fleming described Kleb as in his novel (on the contrary she has a genuinely warm smile in that first picture and was a rather good looking woman). And yet her performance - the way she spoke, moved, what she did with her face - gave off that cold, even off-putting (and yet authoritative) impression that defines the character.

I totally agree. Lotte Lenya was not the ugly bitch she was turned into for the movie. Look at her portraits from the 1920s...not what you would call a classical beauty, but certainly a pretty person.
    500x500.jpg

At the risk of going forward too much, I compare her to the role of Ilse Steppat (who sadly died before the movie was released) in OHMSS. There is a lot of (at least: past) beauty being hidden for the sake of the movie character.

Either of those two might have qualified for the role of a Bond girl (except that their qualities as an actor were excessive for that), had they been 30 or (in the case of Lenya) 40 years younger.

Yes, both weren't ugly women by any stretch of the imagination, and are even noticeably pretty at the ages they did those films when off camera.

It's actually interesting that they didn't add too many 'embellishments' to either actress/their appearance. Yes, they have particular costumes, their hair is done up, they have a certain amount of make-up etc. but Lenya for example wasn't given prosthetics or anything to make her look 'toad-like'. It's her performance that sells Klebb's repulsiveness. A very talented actress.

Funnily, the translation of the German title of Ilse Steppat's movie is: The man who wanted to live twice. That sounds Bondian enough, yet it's not a spy tale, but about a man with a serious midlife crisis who fakes his own death to start anew.
Ilse Steppat is ca. 32 in that picture.

Fun trivia find: The director of "Der Mann, der zweimal leben wollte" (The Man Who Wanted to Live Twice - 1950) was one (ta-taaaa) Viktor Tourjansky (b. 1891 Kyiv, d. 1976 Munich) - the father of *the* Victor Tourjansky who had those appearances on a double-taking pigeon level in TSWLM, MR and FYEO.

These photos really do highlight the beauty of the female leads! Daniella looks gorgeous. Sad to see Young standing in for Pedro Armendáriz. The tragic story of Pedro and how Young had to stand in for him for far away shots makes me treasure his performance even more! He just lights up the screen every time Karim appears.

Excellent photos, thanks everyone for sharing. This is still, for me, the most perfectly made Bond film. Can't find a single fault.

The last time Ian Fleming got to see a Bond movie get filmed. It’s saddens me, actually.
