December 008 is so far unused so I'm posting this Christmas Card from the GoldenEye production to represent.

To let December 009 not go without mention, I post this bridge item. Don't think they know what they just did here.

Most Bonderful Time of the Year

Now I'm seeing that pic as 'four Bonds decorating a Christmas tree'. Presumably the non-blonde Sean/George/Tim/Pierce.

(I think the one up the ladder is female, which begs the question of why there's only one woman on this team and why they're making her do the hard bit.)

    10th December

After many great images and funny videos, I try it with something else: A personal story from my past. A moment I always like to remember because it combines my three most important things in life. My wonderful wife (and our two lovely kids that followed), spending funny moments with good friends AND James Bond.

It was the end of February in 2015. No Bond movie was released this winter (but SF wasn’t too far away!) and I had time for other things. For example to marry my girlfriend😉 My soon-to-be-wife would have preferred an anonymous wedding, she doesn’t like to be in the spotlight. My wish was to spend a great time with our closest friends and relatives. The worst thing for me would have been one of these boring weddings where almost nothing happens apart from eating a dinner, sitting next to odd people you don’t know. (Ok, in this case, I would have known the guests, since I would have invited them but I think you know what I mean). I love games and it was important for me that there was enough going on apart from eating and drinking. (As a teenager, I was also always part of the team that planned the “entertainment programme” for school camps etc.) I could convince my wife that a small party wasn’t too bad and no stupid games were allowed. The wedding feast took place in a house in the forest with around 60 guests. Not too big and without the usual “nick-nack” (I don’t mean the guy from 1974.)

I hope you aren’t bored already. You ask, what has it to do with Bond? Well, one of the games was a very special one and definitely an amusing moment. A good friend (let’s call him Blofeld) of us announced that a quiz would start soon. A quiz with ten Bond questions! I had already a bright smile on my face. I love quizzes and absolutely adore Bond quizzes. I was already sure that this would be very easy since no one in the room had my Bond knowledge. Not even close!

You have to know that I don’t like to lose in games…and my best friends usually enjoy it when I lose in a game…

Blofeld explained that my opponents would be my dad and my father-in-law. Now I was 100 % sure that I would finish the mission VERY successfully. My dad liked all the Bond movies but he wasn’t good in remembering any details. He didn’t even know most of the titles (apart from GF)! I will therefore call my dad “Goldfinger” for the rest of the story. I didn’t know a lot about the knowledge of my other opponent (let’s call him Drax) but I was pretty sure that his brain capacitiy for Bond trivia was around the same low level as the one of my dad…eh I mean Goldfinger.

What I didn’t know was that my wife (also known as Kronsteen) had an evil masterplan:
Blofeld wrote the questions and my wife gave the detailed list with all the answers to Auric and Hugo some weeks before the wedding. They had to memorize all the answers. Auric and Hugo liked the idea, It wasn’t the first time they cheated at a game… Blofeld expected that I would know the first two or three questions and would fail afterwords.

I stood next to Drax and Goldfinger, ready for the first question presented by Blofeld on the PowerPoint. Blofeld explained that every right answer would be counted as one point. A wrong answer would mean that the other two villains would get the point! That was a sinister move and I got a bit nervous now, standing in the middle of the guests. And the first question was revealed:

    1. In which city is the first scene of the CR PTS situated?

    Answer:
    Prague

I knew it and answered after a few seconds. I almost said the country instead of the city. But my first point was confirmed by Blofeld! My confidence was back!

    2. Which five cards lead Bond to the victory against Le Chiffre at the poker table?
    Straight Flush: Spades 4,5,6,7,8

Damn it, I wasn’t sure. I knew the colour but which numbers??
Suddenly, Drax said the right answer?! (With a very bad but funny pronunciation. He doesn’t understand ten words in english). It was explained that he remembered it because he loves Poker that much. I wasn’t sure if Drax was telling the truth but there wasn’t much time to think about it. The next question was announced:

    3. How many players are part of the poker game in CR?
    10

Blofeld thought that this would be difficult for me, but, honestly, that’s an easy question for a Bond fan and I went into the lead again. I answered with a velocity my wife would like to see when I have to clean the kitchen…

    4. How much was Bond’s tip for the croupier (after the game in CR)?
    500’000 $

I wasn’t sure but I felt like I should try to give an answer. I tried it with 10’000 $. Wrong! And it resulted in a tie again.

    5. What is the colour of Elektra’s dress in the casino (TWINE)?
    Red

Blofeld didn’t expect that I would know it. Ha! I’m not good in memorizing clothes of people. But this is Sophie Marceau. I had a clear image in my brain. 3 point for me vs. 2 points for the villains. I was ready for the next question!

    6. Bond catches a plane in the PTS of GE. What is the exact name/ model of the aircraft?
    Pilatus PC 6 Porter

I had no clue. And I was a bit afraid that Goldfinger would know it. Indeed. He knew it. Oh no! The guests were amused. More than I was. Auric explained that the plane was used in the swiss army and he never forgot it because of the red star. 3:3 The villains caught up again. That was unexpected.

    7. In which movie do we see the factory, in which the plane was engineered?
    GF (Goldfinger’s factory in Switzerland)

I had an idea but wasn’t sure…I waited a bit too long and Drax came up with the right answer. It was definitely possible that he would know such a thing but I was sceptical that the game was somehow collusive. Anyway, I didn’t give up. The villain’s were in front now and I had to fight back with the next answer…

    8. PTS LALD: The representative of which country is sitting next (on the right side from our view) to the representative from the United Kingdom?
    Honduras

Whaaaaat? How should I know this? How could anyone know this? Seriously, who of you could answer this fiendish question?

Well…Goldfinger said: Oh, wait, I think I remember. Wasn’t it a small country in South America. Or more exactly, yes…I remember…in central America. Something with H…” (My eyes got bigger and bigger!) and then he said the name of the country --- The screenshot of the movie was revealed. Goldfinger was right! Everyone in the house had to laugh now. It was totally absurd. Everyone realized now (if they didn’t thought it before) that they tricked me! Goldfinger and Drax didn’t laugh. But it was clear that they enjoyed the moment as much as everyone else. My wife aka Kronsteen looked very happy, too…and Blofeld went on to the next question.

    9. Is Bond wearing a hat in the gun barrel of LALD?
    No
I was pretty sure that I knew the answer but I couldn’t stay focused anymore and waited what would happen next. It was Goldfinger again who answered it. He was right (what a surprise…😉)
I asked Goldfinger a very simple question: "You obviously know everything. Please tell me the name of this Bond actor." Goldfinger smiled and said: "Pirs Bromsen". He wasn’t even able to name good old Rog! Noone could take it serious anymore but the atmosphere in the snowy forest was great.

    10. Which two cards receives Bond right before he introduces himself the first time with the famous: “Bond, James Bond.”
    Clubs king and heart nine

The most iconic scene of them all and I didn’t know it! (I forgot it again and still wouldn’t know it now). Do you know it?

I can’t remember who of the two villains answered it. It didn’t matter. What matters is that this was a perfect way to trick me and amuse me (and all the guests) at the same time. The three main villains did a great job. But we shouldn’t forget Kronsteen. It was her masterplan and this is only one of thousands great ideas she had since I know her and it is one of thousands reasons I love her.

I won’t have a similar feast this winter/this Christmas. But I know that my lovely wife and my kids are with me and there will also be time for one or two Bond movies during my holidays. That’s not bad, not bad at all.

Thank you if you took the time to read the whole thing. (The last time I wrote a longer text in English was ten years ago for my master thesis…)

All the best to all of you. GSR

I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall (or a guest, then I could eat the food and drink the drink!) at your wedding @goldenswissroyale. Out of respect I would have tried to hide my laughter and do my very best to look sympathetic at such a shameful trick to be played on a dedicated Bond fan like yourself ... but I suspect I would have not been able to resist! ;)

I enjoyed reading the contributions last year, and this year the standard is just as high - very entertaining!

In case I don't return to this thread in time, a Merry Christmas to each and everyone one of you! :)

It would be a pleasure to have you as a guest at another dinner/game/party one day @Max_The_Parrot.
Thanks @Resurrection. Aren't weddings in India a “huge event“? I'm sure this can be fun, too. But I still prefer smaller parties where I know everybody's name and where I have time to talk to (almost) all guests ;)
  • That was a wonderful story, @goldenswissroyale. Thank you for sharing. Bond quiz aside, one of the coolest aspects of your wedding must have been the fact it took place in a snowy forest!

(Oh and you'd better not let the missus and your father-in-law know you called them Kronsteen and Drax, haha)

Oh it's a huge event here @goldenswissroyale even in middle class families like mine. Even i prefer small parties rather than strangers i don't even know or won't even meet till someone else's wedding. I would rather invite our whole mi6community members here on my wedding, it would be much more fun wedding ;)

Also a few of my relatives always makes excuses for their show off weddings and says "if you are going to marry do it properly by inviting everyone and following every single rituals", i always respond "following religious rituals aren't expensive showing off is". After that they look at me like villians look at bond after he said something clever they don't like to hear :P

They certainly had fun putting that one together. I don't think I've ever been told to "Have a Merry Christmas!" in quite so aggressive a manner.

Excellent lineup of Bond-themed gifts, @Agent_99. Those outfits of Bond posters are entertaining. I guess you never really do realize how many different bathrobes Roger goes through in that one film. And they've even got Sean's seagull cap.

When I first saw that "Pilot's Notes for Parachute" hardcover, I instantly hoped it was an actual manual someone had written as Q Branch explaining to field agents how to operate their gadgets. You know, the sort of thing Bond would "shoot through" in a few seconds. I really think there would be an audience for that.

That would be brilliant - something along the lines of the Haynes Manuals, originally designed to help owners maintain their cars but now branched out into fighter planes, Star Wars etc etc:
