    I'll attend. ;)
    Better make that two.

Not a Newman hater myself (love Skyfall but Spectre was too repetetive and boring) but i'll join just to hang out with you guys :D

Guys, enough is enough, this Newman bashing needs to stop NOW. First of all, right now it seems extremely unlikely he will return. Second, his Skyfall score was MILES above anything Arnold has ever created.
I like the sound of things. Bring back David Arnold and we're all happy.
Speak for yourself, Marketto. If Arnold returned I would certainly be VERY unhappy.

The music will be good with Boyle directing. He won’t tolerate the insipid elevator music that Newman churns out to order.
Ask yourself this question: why did professional composers (member of the music branch of the Academy) believe back in 2012 that Newman's score was one of the 5 best movie scores of 2012?
David Arnold hasn't scored a Bond film for 10 years. In fact, He's barely scored anything for 10 years. I heard that Arnold had been "blacklisted" in the industry for some reason. I really doubt he'll come back.
I really hope you are right. It seems EON will FINALLY get rid of P&W, and people here want Arnold back???

No Spectre plot thread remained unresolved. Spectre is defeated. The baddie is captured. Bond won. Next.

Why are they labelled as professional composers if they never nominated John Barry's James Bond scores?

If it is to be Boyle and Craig it’s about as close to a home town Bond movie as I’ll get. Bring the northern swagger.

Can I bring my own Sykes-Fairbairn throwing knives for the dartboards? Darts thudding into Tom's mug just not satisfying enough.

    Lovely stuff!

Both Michael Kamen and Éric Serra's scores were certainly better than Newman's efforts.
Not sure I'd go that far. It's close but at the end of the day SF has some excellent parts that surpass just repeating the Bond theme over and over and over again or laying a 70's porn track over the action.

The Newman scores are not disastrous, but they're not very good either. So I was being hyperbolic.
I think this is a reasonable statement to those bleating about people slagging off Newman. If he had just done SF he would probably have gone down as another a Hamlisch or Conti but coming back and just giving us sloppy seconds killed him in the eyes of many of us to the point where he's almost reached Rory Kinnear levels of ridicule.

Correct. The Newman hate on these boards is ridiculous.

Anyone who can stretch out "The Moors" to last 18 minutes in a row must be super talented. :P

I feel bad for the guitarist who had to strum those same 9 notes over and over and over again. =))

I don't get all the Newman hate. I loved his score for Skyfall and liked his score for SPECTRE. Especially M's, Judi Dench's M's, theme. Grand Bazaar, Istanbul is also amazing and quite rich. Donna Lucia's theme is wonderful, Hinx's piano cue is quite subtle and thought-provoking, his homage to John Barry's whistle in the opening helicopter loop is quite nice too. Then little cues like the piano in "Secret Room". I really don't get all the hatred. I'd rather have him back than have Arnold back. David Arnold only did one great Bond score, Casino Royale. QoS is acceptable, but nothing more. Thomas Newman managed to retain most of the Bond sound while evolving it and making it his own. And in a way, every single great Bond Score, not made by Barry, has managed to do exactly that. Take the funky LALD, the classy disco Marvin Hamlisch, Conti's 80s FYEO… I find TND, TWINE and especially DAD to be much more generic than both of Thomas' scores.

No one will be as good as Barry was back in the day.

I thought his sf effort was good, not as good as arnolds previous two. His sp score was unoriginal and awful. His style is fine for a one off, but that's it. Couldnt be happier to see him go.

I’d love Newman back but Danny Boyle has his own man. Can’t remember his name off hand.

Not sure Tom was inventive enough to get the guy to keep playing it.

How it went down was he just got the guy to play the 9 notes once and worked out how long the scene was and just kept hitting CTRL V over and over until the 9 note sample had looped enough times to fill the required time.

Then just put his coat on, trousered his huge cheque from EON and was out the door.

    'Mine's a pint.'

    Newman is a good composer

Arnold is a fantastic bond composer

    Clear differance

Which must be why Arnold's credits include...???

I did. I beg to differ. Arnold's work on TND, TWINE, and DAD was so-so. CR and QoS were much better. Regardless, DA's inability to secure anything notable over the past ten years is cause for concern.

    And that is one opinion.
TND resurrected the Bond score ; his next two were very good. if not great. CR was spectacular, and captured the essence of Bond while being fresh. QoS built on that.
Given another go, Arnold would again resurrect the Bond sound track.
Isn’t that a recurring theme of Craig’s Bond,

    Resurrection?

That would imply he has an interest in doing much else. I can assure you, he does not. Following on from the way his bigger 90s scores were butchered in edits (one of the reasons why he fell out with Dean Devlin and Emmerich just before he was supposed to start scoring The Patriot), Arnold had zero interest in scoring major films. It was a personal decision to score mostly TV and smaller-scale films, with Bond (which was his big love), television and the odd mid-level films being the exception. He picks projects that he loves and can fully craft as his own. It's one of the reasons why he does a lot of stage work and dramas.

But, his detractors will say that he is "blacklisted". I actually find it admirable that he wants to write for things he loves rather than any old blockbuster.

Funnily enough, music being butchered in the editing room was one of the reasons Barry stopped scoring Hollywood films in the mid-90s as films became more kinetic and less casually edited. His style wasn't as popular in the mainstream as the Zimmer/Remote Control music style came into popularity and continues to grow right to this day.

You may or may not like his music, but lot of people assume it's inability when it really isn't.

Is it too on the nose to suggest that perhaps Bond will go back to India in Bond25 now?

I'm quite happy with Boyle, yes.
India was attempted for Skyfall, but aborted due to cost/difficulties that India presented. I'd love a return to India or at least in part PLEASE: Japan. :)

Sorry for not scrolling back and reading much - can anyone tell me is the composer settled yet? I doubt it, but just thought I'd ask. I'm just getting back to the forum a little.

No, but it’s looking very likely Danny Boyle will direct.
  • Welp, my last comment in this thread was on page 191! 1300+ plus pages later and we might have our director? Fingers crossed! I've enjoyed Boyle's filmography and totally forgot he was the director for the 2012 Olympics Bond segment. Nov 2019 is still so far away, but here's hoping this year brings us solid announcements from EON and co.

Quick comment on the Arnold vs Newman scores.. I too was quite shocked at the re-use of themes in SP. I would welcome Arnold back as he has really matured throughout his Bond scores, his best work in CR and QoS. I believe his latest work was on the Sherlock series. Bring him in!

Since the Boyle rumour seems to be true (and I hope there won‘t be a clash about the script) I am very curious what he will bring to the table. But I‘m sure it will have a much higher energy level again than SF (on purpose and fitting) and SP (because out of ideas) had.

Glad I’m not the only one who felt these films barely had a pulse
