My one main takeaway is how absolutely beautiful every frame is, when wonky CGI or green screen isn't stinking it up.

That's about all I get out of it though. The performances are very solid. And trust me, I've tried really, really, really hard to come around on this one. It's only gone up in my estimations thanks to how utterly terrible I think SP is.

I think they felt a ton of pressure to make the 50th anniversary Bond as immaculate as possible; crossing every t and dotting every i, rounding every corner off, putting as much "Bond" in it as absolutely possible, and I think they accomplished all that... but forgot to make it fun.

The polar opposite of Spectre; slapped together, rough around the edges, pieces don't quite all fit... but I derive a lot more fun from it.

Well put. They definitely made a classic but forgot to inject any sense of fun or escapism into it.

I haven't followed this thread for more than half a year, but I still stand by what I wrote in August 2022:

I don't know if I already wrote a post to this thread and didn't feel like checking it all. But at present, my personal preferences are as follows:

    1) SKYFALL - for the sheer enjoyment I felt when watching it at the cinema (two of them, at that) ten years ago.

    2) CASINO ROYALE - the worthy revival of the James Bond franchise.

    3) NO TIME TO DIE - a magnificent movie without major flaws, ending the Daniel Craig tenure and timeline. The end really being needed to start the franchise anew.

You may juggle the succession of those three, and I'm fine with the outcome, since I might as well throw a dice as well.

4)/5) QUANTUM OF SOLACE... or SPECTRE...or both...there is so much wrong with both of them. QOS suffers mainly from its editing (I'm sure I've said THAT before!), while I still can stand that foster brother narrative at the core of SP. Either way, within this thread (Top DC movies), they are badly beaten by the other three for me.
    Nuff said, I guess.

Yes, both films had opposite strengths & weaknesses. Both could have been pure gold with just a little re-writing..

I watched NTTD for the second time the other day and it has lost a lot of its original appeal this time around. My thoughts about the film's second half pretty much remain unchanged (it stinks!) but the first half which I thought was pretty great when I first saw it in the theater, now seems pedestrian and nothing special really.
The Craig era is simply one I don't connect with on any level.

    SP
    NTTD
    CR
    SF
    QOS

Moonraker, at least it had a competent, tough Bond girl, who's very much Bond's equal.

And a menacing, threatening villain with a lot of personality, believable and convincing as a megalomaniac.

The tone might be silly, but the characters, at least were compelling.

Edit: And anyway, Bond films can be silly (they're supposed to be escapism by the way), but they cannot be stupid, that's different.

    Skyfall
    Spectre
    No Time to Die
    Quantum of Solace

My most recent viewings of the latter Craig films have swapped. While Spectre is bloated with ridiculousness, I could always watch it from start to finish. While with NTTD, I usually stop once Blofeld is dead.

Moonraker, for all of it's faults, isn't a depressing film. I saw No Time To Die on the big screen (in the 2nd week I think it was), I paid for my ticket, and saw it legally. That's all that could be asked of me. I will admit, the film had it's moments, but the ending casts a shadow over the rest of the film, and I just don't have the enthusiasm to watch it again.

Yeah I can't help but find Skyfall to be a bit boring these days. Usually won't get through it in one sitting.

    It is beautiful though.

Some call it boring...I call it a slow burn. In fact, four of my top five Bond films move at a pretty slow pace: Skyfall, Thunderball, Goldfinger, and From Russia With Love. Except for the PTS and the ending, the action is pretty minimal--especially Thunderball. To me, this increases the intrigue. But to each their own.

Aside from the ending, the characters were also bland, I just don't care about them, they're not interesting.

I really didn't like Skyfall, but NTTD makes SF look like bloody Lawrence Of Arabia...

Interesting to see SF getting waylaid here, given how positively it was received at the time.

From my own POV, I'm inclined to agree with Calvin Dyson's ranking of the Craig era (SF included), even if his reasons aren't always my own.

The last two are just two frustrating to be any higher. They have higher highs than SPECTRE, but also much more annoying lows.

Ranking is the same, but as time goes on SPECTRE stings the most. Skyfall provided a perfect re-launchpad with balancing the modern and classic elements. SPECTRE initially seems like it’s going to capitalize on this, but it doesn’t take long for it to sink under the weight of disatisfying story decisions.

That said, still prefer it to Quantum and No Time to Die by a longshot. I just wonder what “could have been” with the Craig-Mendes duology of SF and SP.

    1. Casino royale - a needed change of gears after the outlandish DAD. Very enjoyable, with some flaws.

    2. Skyfall - never what I want from Bond, but you can clearly tell they had a vision they were going for, and largely succeed in pulling it off

    3. Quantum Of Solace - mess of a movie, largely caused by outside factors and "tricky second album" syndrome, somewhat redeemed by a few neat scenes (tosca, greenes party) and the refreshing briskness of the 106 minutes runtime.

    4. SPECTRE - A movie with almost zero ideas, creativity, or energy, a boring overlong slog which ultimately leads the baffling revelation that bond and his nemesis are brothers, a decision more bizarre than even the most outlandish moore/brosnan moments.

    5. Bond 25 - if SP jumped the shark, Bond 25 sets the record for most consecutive shark jumps of any franchise. Definitely the worst bond film ever, I was gutted after waiting 6 years to see this.

My ranking is not likely to change from here onwards. CR remains head and shoulders above the other four. QOS and SF are about tied, considered to be great Bond films even if not in the top half of the overall series. SP and NTTD are also about tied, and sit near the bottom overall, with many excellent moments throughout each, but unsatisfying on the whole.

    1. Skyfall - Good cinematography, acting, concept or idea showing the wrongs in the British Intelligence through a villain like Silva, and highly rewatchable.

    2. Casino Royale - A great adaptation of the book, the poker thing is a bit confusing to me, the third act kinda bogs down a bit with the CGI sinking building and unnecessary action scenes before Vesper's death, and some meh lines or dialogues like that 'little finger' line, but apart from that, it's a pretty great outing, decent theme song, but not quite Bondian though (too much rock and edgy), so not a fan of it, and it's one of the Bond films I rewatch the least, not highly rewatchable.

    3. Quantum of Solace - Nice standalone film with an interesting concept although another film that's recycled from Goldfinger about monopolizing some resources (this time, it's water), although editing and some acting issues (particularly from the villains) really hurt the film, also the theme song, although it's also more rewatchable than its predecessor.

    4. SPECTRE - Interesting concept about the mole inside a British Intelligence and manipulating the world security, and I find Craig's performance to be really strong, but so many issues hurts this film (the Bro-feld angle, Madeleine Swann, Max Denbigh not being a convincing villain, yellow palette).

    5. No Time To Die - A Bond film that went too far that it doesn't even felt and looked like a Bond film, it's lacking Bondian quality (for all of what LTK had deviated from the formula, it's still retained at least some of the Bondian quality), but here, there's nowhere to be found (except maybe the Cuba sequence), but the rest was a pretentious melodrama, overcomplicated (and overmagnified) story with disjointed plot, and too many retcons (one of the sins that a Bond film could've done to hurt me as a fan), fan services that clearly didn't makes sense at all (the different M portraits of Bernard Lee and Robert Brown) already betrayed the supposed reboot of the Craig Era and made a lot more confusion within the continuity, no creativity with reusing some OHMSS bits but not earned.

Damn. We are the complete opposite when it comes to QOS. I think its the worst Bond of all time. I hate it. Its painful to watch it when I do a Bond marathon. And I only watch it cause my ODC won't allow me to skip it if I watch the Craig films in order.

I feel you there on OCD - I'll never watch SP on its own but I have to see it during my Bondathons. Love how we have some extreme disagreements there though like that amongst our comparisons, it's fun to see!

I posted my ranking pretty early on this thread (in 2021) but it hasn't really changed. CR, SF and NTTD (in chronological order) basically tying for No. 1 (being in my top 5 Bond movies of all time), and QOS (mostly for its muddled editing) and SP (for the Bloberhauser nonsense) at the end of the line, being in my lowest third of them all. Somewhere down there with the worse examples among the Moore and Brosnan films, though ahead of OP and AVTAK and of course TWINE and DAD. If anything, NTTD increased in my esteem after a few reviews, rivalling SF and CR for my favourite. QOS and SP never did even get close.

Anyone here rank Blood Stone higher than a Craig film? I think if it was a film rather than game it would see an average rank in the top half of Craig's 6 films.
