Total rehash i mean Total Recall the remake. This film barely engaged me on any level, the only positive thing i can say is Kate Beckensdale is gorgeous.

Kate Beckinsale is the only reason I watched it.

The last movie I watched was Diamonds are Forever. Tonight will be Live and Let Die. I'm watching the all over... again.

Non Bond movies this week were The Fall, This is 40, Zero Dark Thirty.

Must admit its probably the main reason why i picked it up, was because Kate was in it.

Just watched Kiss Ass for the first time, loved this movie. A must for any comic book fan.

Over Spring Break, I watched and absolutely loved 'Flight' and 'Zero Dark Thirty,' and I rushed out tonight to purchase the latter on blu-ray. 'The Perks Of Being A Wallflower' was a nice surprise, as well, alongside - I'll admit it - 'Pitch Perfect.' Saw 'The Collection' and, while I loved the ending, really loathed the rest of the film, mainly the acting. The traps and set design were pretty nice, but other than that, it didn't have much going for.

I also re-watched some films I've previously seen - just not as the purchased blu-ray in my collection - such as 'Seven Psychopaths,' 'Haywire,' etc. I also spent the last few days with a 'Die Hard' marathon, which is always highly entertaining. Can't get enough of McClane.

    Breakdown (1997)

Rewatched this again after a few years. Excellent little thriller starring Kurt Russell as the all American every man who's wife is abducted after their car breaks down in the desert. An extremely simple premise which could have turned out average at best but the quality is raised due to strong performances from not only Russell but also the late J.T Walsh.

Vastly superior to several other "relative kidnapping" thrillers like Taken. Nice to see a lead who isn't a "super-agent" or a "tough guy".

Friday The 13th has always been about the carnage caused by Crystal Lakes finest.

    Or by his mum :P

I'm not a fan of the first film and I certainly don't like Pt V.

I don't even think I have seen any or all of Part 1, and to be frank after a while they all become the same. I am not that much of a Jason guy anyway, as Michael Myers/Halloween is my go-to series in the genre (the original being my favorite horror film).

You know the feeling you get when someone says 'If you've seen one Bond film, you've seen them all'? That's how I feel when someone says that about the Friday series. There are distinct changes in the Friday series, be it Pamela Voorhees as the killer, Jason as the killer, taking the series away from Crystal Lake, almost removing Jason from the film, sending Jason into space or pitting Jason against another horror icon. Not to mention the tonal changes in the series, be it mean and nasty or ultra cheesey.
Halloween was more about suspense than racking up a body count, though the Halloween sequels from (and including) H4 on, feel more like Friday films.

Dredd. Fantastic, best comic book movie I've ever seen. It's a shame that it didn't do too well in Americathere won't be a sequel.

Road Warrior. Classic. One of the best action films of all time.

First one is one of my favourites but I do prefer Jason to his mum. Part V was awful, I agree.

My Wife's choice this afternoon and one her all time favourites, Jason and the Argonauts.

My choice tonight and it's going to be LALD, not watched it since I got the the Bond 50 box set.

My ears are still adjusting after a raucous very loud Black Rebel Motorcycle Club gig at Leeds Academy last night, they certainly make an impressive racket!
  • Watched The Hunger Games for the first time - which was surprisingly good.

  • Just watched Amazing spiderman, which I have been putting off for a while.
I wish I had put it off completely, as it is awful.
Peter Parker is a nerd, yet this Garfield guy looks like a boy-band member!!

GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra

It was on TV last night. Never really been into GI Joe so I didn't really know the characters all too well aside from Cobra Commander. However, where was he in this movie - it certainly wasn't that other guy with the crystal skull :P. It was blah movie, the CGI was lousy and it didn't really make me care about any of the characters or being interested in GI Joe franchise. Funny enough I do want to see Retaliation.

    North By Northwest

    "I'm a big girl"
"Yep...and in all the right places too"

I've seen this several times before but finally got round to watching my Blu Ray last night. Stylish, playful, charismatic and superior to about 95% of the Bond movies, North By Northwest is a classic in every sense of the word. All the cast are excellent but IMO James Mason gives the best performance as the smooth villain. In a way its a shame he never played Bond (I know Fleming apparently considered him) as he had all the right qualities. Who cannot fall in love with Cary Grant and Eva when they are on the train (I know I've watched a similar scene in another more recent film :p )

The Blu Ray transfer is superb too and resembles a fine painting. Ideal for a great work of art like this :)

I love this film but I love the following even more

    The Lion King

My favourite Disney film and the one I wore out on VHS when growing up, I just adore it. Best scene for me is when Simba sees Mufasa's ghost in the sky. Forget Darth Vader, this is James Earl Jones's finest hour (at least IMO). Again the Blu Ray transfer is superb too.

    G.I. JOE: RETALIATION

    GI-Joe-Retaliation-Cobra-Commander-Stormshadow-e1364375729590.jpg

Okay, I'm pleased - nay, more than pleased. I was a Joe fan as a boy in the 80s and grew up with nostalgic love for the franchise. The Sommers film back in '09 let me down on a few accounts, one of them being the portrayal of the Cobra Commander and the lack of non-stop action. This second film, as its trailer correctly announced, is the bigger-better-balsier big brother to said film. The Cobra Commander's look is restored to the punch of the cartoons and comics, the action is thundering and injected with far more muscle and testosterone than in the previous film. Retaliation features great ninja fights - don't you just love Storm Shadow? - wonderful gun fights and a simple but therefore all the more adequate world domination plot by Cobra (and incidentally one that I can use in my physics classes. ;-) ).

I have read negative reviews by people who complain about the all-action-no-brains style of the film. I'm sorry but that's like complaining about women flaunting their curves in a porn flick. You go see a Joe, you don't expect Shakespeare. You go see a Joe, you get bullets, swords, comic book villains with comic book villains' plans and a script 8 year olds can enjoy as well.

The previous film shouted "Go Joe!". This one shouts "Hoo-Ah!" And there's my conclusion for you: G.I. Joe is no steak with pepper sauce and mushrooms. It's a fat cheeseburger with extra fries. But man, occasionally that's what the body needs. I make a fist with my hands and yell "ef yeah!".

    WARM BODIES

    warm-bodies-slice.jpg

This isn't Twilight, folks. Instead, it's a film I enjoy. Romance in a zombie flick, huh? Well, I was at first a trifle concerned myself but the girlfriend announced she had to see it so I took her. And I wasn't the least bit disappointed. I find this film to be interesting, inspiring and ... well, warm. In a sense. It isn't a tear jerker - which is good for I hate those - but it has the guts (no pun intended) to move beyond the usual stuff one finds in a zombie film. If Night Of The Living Dead is the respectable granddaddy of all zombie films, this one is a second cousin once removed but who you like to hang out with.

I can't quite put my finger on Warm Bodies' demographic. I honestly think there's material in here for all to enjoy in equal doses. I recommend you see this film.

I just watched 'Movie 43,' and it was marginally good. Some skits were a lot better than others, and I didn't get to see the main plotline because it was dubbed in Russian, sadly. But, overall, it wasn't a total waste of time.

Elizabeth Olsen deserves all praise that she's been given. Though I didn't quite get where Marlene comes from, I think I've worked out Martha and Marcy May, but not Marlene. Oh well, I guess i'll need a re-watch. :)

    2001: A Space Odyssey

    2001_space_station.jpg

Mere words cannot describe my love and praise for this epic film. 2001: A Space Odyssey, Stanley Kubrick's visionary and visually stunning science fiction masterpiece, is my very favourite movie ever made. Watching this film sparked the onset of my science fiction (and science) passion. Because of 2001, I started reading Clarke's books, then other science fiction works, then science textbooks and from there on, my professional future was set.

    2001-A-SPACE-ODYSSEY-008.jpg

Yet I know how hard it is for some to sit through 2001. Words like 'boring' and 'confusing' are used much to my own regret. It is, however, understandable that not everyone will enjoy this 1968 classic. It really does take a certain mindset - one might refer to it as scientifically spiritual or spiritually scientific or whatever - and a profound appreciation for a specific aesthetic to go with it. Also, it's not an action flick or a monster movie. 2001 is like a slowly moving painting, allowing us to absorb every single pixel on screen, inhale the enigmatic flavours of the moon, Jovian space and time/space tunnel towards the infinite, and contemplate the mysterious yet hopeful nature of the true protagonists of the film. Forget about dialogues or good versus evil. This films isn't even about human characters. Only humanity as a whole, unbound to time or space, is part of the show. So it's an unconventional film in many ways. And it requires an unconventional form of film watching too. But this is the film which people like Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott, James Cameron, George Lucas, Robert Wise and many more have publicly credited as a major source of inspiration.

    2001aspaceodyssey.jpg

2001: A Space Odyssey fuels me with energy and hopeful dreams of our future. It puts tears in my eyes every time I see it. This is more than just a film watching experience. This is beauty revealed through the timeless craftsmanship of Kubrick and his crew.

    Own it; love it.

We just saw Life Of Pi. What a beautiful movie, Ang Lee's best IMHO. This may be my second favourite non-action/non-SF movie of all time (my fave is The Road Home).

I have yet to see LOP. Something about the trailer kept me from being enthusiastic. Looked OK visually but I feared it would be another Avatar. On top of that, my pupils went to see the film while I was occupied with some other tasks, and their comments were rather negative I must say. Now, it's not my normal m.o. to go by the reviews of teens but hey, it certainly didn't fuel my enthusiasm either. ;-). I could be mistaken of course. Judging by your words, I need to see it then?

Don't listen to most of my generation, @DarthDimi; a good portion of them tend to be an ignorant bunch of texting gits. Those that call the deep character study of Citizen Kane dull, those that think Twilight is more of an impactful romance than Casablanca and those who find our greatest pieces of literature to be useless texts of boring content. They repel me...

The funny thing is that visually I didn't find it all amazing, merely very good CGI that can be found anywhere these days; the magic is in the story, the writing & direction IMO.
  • Just watched Terminator Salvation....rather quite good...the director loves the previous films and you can see the love come through...the cgi young Arnie is awesome

I felt it was enjoyable, and kind of experimental in the way for a while it's not certain who the main character is... not at all a bad film, just a film that could never have lived up to expectations.

So do you think that Deakins was wrongly beaten by LOP for cinematography at the Oscars?

Well, I was referring above to the FX more than the cinematography... no, I guess LOP deserved it; LOP had some very pretty shots and transitions, truthfully I'd call it a toss up.

I just came back from seeing this film in IMAX 3D and while I paid a steep price, this showing was worth every penny. It is about as close to seeing the film for the first time as I can get.

Highly recommended if it is playing by you.
