RIP to the Irish poet Seamus Heaney, 74, after a rather short illness.
Simply put, his poetry and essays have touched my soul and will stay with me always. I really cherish some of his words. Thank you, Seamus.

My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Indeed, "A True Son of Northern Ireland" and I'm proud he was our poet over here.

An Irish poet through and through yes - and he was more than that, too. A poet for all people, no matter where they live. And I say that not as someone who generally reads poetry. A great poet, writer, and by all accounts a genuinely nice person who remained humble. I want to share three brief quotes From Seamus, then I'm done. I know this is a Bond forum, but really his writing has touched many people, and he has just passed away. So let me just briefly share this little bit more:

"I can't think of a case where poems changed the world, but what they do is they change people's understanding of what's going on in the world.”

"“Walk on air against your better judgement."
As encouragement, to "go for it" as we Americans are so fond of saying ... I do love this wording. (This was part of his Nobel prize acceptance speech.)

And the appropriate final lines from his poem, "Digging" ~
    "The squat pen rests.
    I'll dig with it."

This poem,"Digging," is one of his more famous poems in which writes of his family, growing up on a farm in northern Ireland, his history of farmers who use spades and dig the soil - but not for him; his calling as a poet had him digging with words all of his long and productive life.

RIP to a wonderful poet, one who dug with his pen so meaningfully for so long.
  • Today was the 16th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana in an automobile accident in Paris

The great pugilist Rocky Marciano also left us on this day in 1969. Easily one of the greatest sporting names that ever lived and reached legendary status in the boxing ring

    RIP to both

Just heard the breaking news that Sir David Frost has died of a suspected heart attack at the age of 74. A legendary broadcaster and journalist whose legacy will live long in the memory. RIP.

Responsible for such great shows like That Was The Week That Was and The Frost Report (which gave us the likes of John Cleese and Ronnie Barker), I suspect he will be mostly remembered for this:

Not just for Nixon granted he did a great job with tricky dicky but also he was behind the founding
of satirical comedy on tv in this country with That Was The Week That Was in the 1960s.
I will miss his insight very much RIP Sir David Goodnight and God Bless.

I've just been reacquainting myself with this little gem from 1967. (A youthful Eric Idle can be seen in the audience).

Too bad about JJ Cale. Eric Clapton is going to be so sad.
Those two were a great team.

I'm gutted. Really, I am. I honestly thought he'd be the first of the Bond alumni to become a centenarian.

RIP Ken. Thanks for all you've done and being a great guy to boot. :(

RIP Ken Wallis! You will always be remembered by us Bond fans for piloting and giving us Little Nellie in YOLT!

The nice thing is that your creation dominates the poster front and foremost! That will remain forever! RIP.

Sad to hear of the death of Wing Commander Ken Wallis. A true gentleman adventurer.
  • RIP Ken Wallis - grand old age and it looks like he lived it to the full. Also little Nellie is one of the most iconic 'Q' gadgets of all time!

In memoriam to the 2996 people who died on this day in 2001. RIP.

Absolutely. Woke up this morning, lit my cigarette, looked at the calendar, and was just stunned that it's been 12 whole years since that tragedy took place.

I was in fifth grade and sadly, I had no concept of what had happened: I had no idea what the Twin Towers or Pentagon even were. All I knew is they let us outside (for some reason) to play recess all day, so I was ignorant and happy. I just couldn't process the act of terrorism, so to me, it was just a day of relaxing.

But with that, I always know exactly where I was, what I was doing, and who told us what happened. It's still such a chilling thought, gives me goosebumps thinking about it.

RIP to all those poor souls who lost their lives on that tragic day.

I was 22 then. I remember waking up and getting on the computer, and saw the image of one of the two WTC towers smoking on the Yahoo homepage. I didn't know what to make of it, so I read a few sentences then immediately turned on the TV. It was a Tuesday so I had to work, later in the day. But until then all that morning and then subsequently when I came home in the early evening I remained glued to the TV. It was a strange, awful feeling for some days there that I don't know how to put into words.

    Rest in peace, all 2996.
  • Yes same here @Thunderball. I was 25yrs old when it happened. Only a couple of people had internet at my work here in the UK so they were updating the rest of us as to what was happening. Once we'd heard a second plane hit the other tower we knew it was a terrorist attack. There was a stunned silence when we were told the first tower collapsed. I got home from work at 6pm and didn't move from the telly for a good 7 hours or so.

RIP to all the 9/11 victims and best wishes to there families.
  • It's been an emotional day for all concerned and can only take this opportunity to give sympathies to the families of all that lost their lives on that fateful day, 12 years ago now, not just in New York, but Virginia, and Pennsylvania - even if a little belated - after the atrocities on our country where so many lives were lost. It's a been a difficult last few hours

God bless the United States and this country will never give in to terrorist elements. RIP the 3,000 that sadly perished that awful day. You will never be forgotten

  • It's a bit belated, but today would of been -

Tony Curtis - accomplished actor that featured in releases such as Spartacus, The Boston Strangler and Some Like It Hot - died today in 2010 (age 85 years)

Lois Maxwell - needs no introduction. Best damn Moneypenny ever and a mainstay of the franchise up until her retirement in 1985 - died today in 2007 (aged 80 years)

    RIP to both

  • James Dean - rebel without a cause - died today in 1955. Taken so young in life at a mere 24 years of age and his legend lives on. RIP
