Great selection there. I particularly like the clapperboard shot and especially that final shot of Karin - delicious. Much appreciated.)

Thanks for the pictures of Jan @Benny very interesting story of how he was cast, presumably by Gilbert and then tossed aside after filming some of Blofeld scenes.

Would've been interesting had Jan Werich stayed in the role, how his Blofeld would've turned out, or been received.
A few more shots to round out the day.

Is it just me or does Connery looking the spitting image of Lazenby in the first picture and then Dalton in the second?

  • edited June 2023 Posts: 3,005
I don't think that's Connery in the second pic but Tetsuro Tamba. But otherwise yes! I think he looks like Dalton in that pic and just with the late 60s jumper/haircut (or rather toupee) Connery looks like Lazenby in OHMSS there.

    Thanks for the input @zebrafish
Donald Pleasance was an odd choice for Blofeld. A wonderful and competent actor.
With his eye makeup and chilling voice, he is the archetypical version of Blofeld.
However, he displayed little menace or threat. But he did convey the very evil character we'd seen in FRWL and TB, who would dispatch of anyone who failed him without any hesitation.

Looks to me from these photos that recasting Werich was the right choice.

I wish they had given Pleasance a somewhat less OTT scar that they could have carried forward to the actors from OHMSS and DAF. It could have been Blofeld's continuous signature in the films along with the cat.

Yes, I know Fleming wrote Blofeld as a master of physical reinvention but that's never been explored/exploited in the films.

They can with the next era, as they can plan it out better. Blofeld should always be a threat.

Moving on to the sixth EON Bond movie. The last Bond film from the 60's, and the sole Bond film for George Lazenby.

George posing with the PPK short silencer which is not seen in the film, but would return for DAF publicity shots with Sean - not seen in that film either AFAIK.

Absolutely; I would not trade the Moore era but one can't wonder what a Lazenby era would have been like. If motivated I think he would have grown into the role nicely; his physicality would definitely been an asset.

I disagree. George Lazenby was the only Bond actor who I never thought was credible as Bond. He just exuded a sort of bland stupidity for me just by his looks. All the others were more appropriate. I'm glad that GL only made that one Bond movie, which turned out surprisingly good, but not because of but in spite of GL.

And yes, I know, I've said this before.

Back in the day he certainly was hard to get used to. However, for many of us, he and everything about the film has changed. For the better. Compared with Moore, GL was much more of a Connery type. I don't believe his looks were bland or stupid; his just wasn't the face we'd seen for five previous films. For me it was Moore who was never convincing. For whatever reason, Brosnan doesn't come to mind when I think of the Bond history, although I've seen all of his films.

GL will always be one of those "what if" stories.

Anyone reckon this guy (Robert Campbell, I believe) looks a little bit like Henry Cavill in The Man from Uncle? I think he's the only one of the five finalists apart from Lazenby who looked the part.

Now that you mention it @George_Kaplan he kind of does.

No sitting on laps, but Diana and George are clearly getting on in some of these images.
The much publicized feud on set might've been more overblown than we thought.
