Personally I think Eon are very meticulous with Bond casting, I like the Bond actors to varying degrees. Brosnan for me is my least favourite though popular for many fans, never a misstep by any stretch. They probably have the next actor already pencilled in. Is Aidan Turner in the Hobbit?

A non-white Bond isn't Bond. That's too far removed from Fleming's elitist creation, who pined for the days of the British Empire. Just create a new fucking character if it's so important to have a black spy.

I haven't seen him in anything. And when I googled him for the first time, I shared your sentiments exactly.

Bonds NOT a code name lol.
Let's be honest a black bond would flop. Look at how much money skyfall and spectre reeled in. I was the only white guy on a mostly all black basketball team. I am far from a racist.

Batman, superman, captain America are kinda like code names, anyone can assume their identity. Let me rephrase this, why is there no black Bruce Wayne, Peter Parker or Steve Rogers?

They are white. They created new characters. I have no issue with them saying Idris Elba is 008 or whatever and maybe he takes over or maybe they make a spin off film. It wouldn't be bad to see a new character with a completely different personality than Bond. I mean what has the world come to when people are debating if we should have a woman bond and if we don't it's sexist??

    Want a transgender bond next?

If Craig does leave, then I think they should make a 60s themed series, don't do an origin or reboot just do what they did in the old days. Just another mission. I was re watching the the old films and I miss how they just made movies and acted like nothing happened. I think we will always have a James Bond series but they do need to switch it up. I just don't think the current time period is helping Bond, it's losing its original charm. Just my thoughts.

If you watch Dr No all the way through Spectre you'll see what I am saying.

It's sad that we can't just make movies anymore without people wanting to add transgenders, gays, lesbians, change roles based on race;ect...

I presume you're referring to this:

This could be why some are hoping for Elba.

I think there is a big difference between a Caucasian pretending to be Asian and a coloured actor playing a part. Elba won't be pretending to be white, he will just be portraying his version on Bond.

Past history would suggest otherwise, Moore, Dalton, Brosnan all in the frame years before they got the role. I think if Cavil was not tied up with DC he would be a cert.

Recently speaking Caucasian characters in Asian roles weren't pretending to be Asian either. They just had Asian names. No eye makeup or nothing. There isn't a difference. There's a big double standard going on. Both are wrong. Bond is a white character and should Only be played by White actors.

If Cavill weren't tied up with DC, based on EON's track record as you said, we could figure to see both his name and that of Rupert Friend on the shortlist. Both made it very far along in the casting process for Casino Royale.

I can't see Cavill being in contention, though, due to DC. Either Justice League flops, freeing him up, or its successful and keeps him tied up, but either way, I can't see EON turning to him to lead the franchise forward.

I think we were quite fortunate that both Wilson and Campbell were reportedly overruled by Babs.

Cavill is not the man for the job imho. Something's not quite there in practice, although on paper he looks great. No gravitas. I had no idea Rupert Friend was even considered for CR. He has potential.

I would pick Elba based on his personality not ethnic origin, I think in his character he has James Bond attributes. I like Rowan Atkinson would he make a good Bond, No IMO and its nothing to do with ethnicity.

Regarding Cavil, I hate to admit it though he has not shown depth as yet.

I don't think his personality is suited to Bond anyway, same with his appearence. It's not a role he's suited for. Same for Rowan Atkison, I'd never see either as James Bond. You know who I do think is suited for the role? The man already playing him.

There was an article a while back that I remember reading that said something to the effect that he was under serious consideration at some point during the process where it looked like Craig wasn't going to accept the part. I'm trying to find the article, although admittedly with little luck so far. I'll keep trying, though.

CBn also had an article with a rundown of the contenders they were able to confirm and how far they'd gotten in the process. What it said about Friend: "Friend gave an impressive reading and was at one point in the selection process was as serious a candidate as Henry Cavill."

This is the last time I'll address this. There is a clear difference here, particularly in the balance of power. You have very few black, asian, and minority ethnic protagonists in Western cinema, so when you recast a minority character as a white person, you're only enforcing an existing prejudice.

Moving back into Bond, a black British man playing a traditionally white British character is a perfectly sensible interpretation of the character. The only difference is the colour of their skin. There is nothing about Bond's character that necessitates a particular ethnicity.

    @bondjames

Found the "article" in question, it's actually a radio clip from this past October on the BBC Radio website. Debbie McWilliams talks about Brosnan's Remington Steele issues and then says that she'd brought Rupert Friend in to meet everyone and they were excited about the prospect of him as Bond. This was, however, before Craig's involvement, not during as I'd mistakenly said above. At that point, they were looking at younger actors to take the role and mature with it, which is probably where Cavill was at his most serious as a contender. Friend pulled himself out of contention due to his feeling of being too inexperienced to take on the part and do it the justice it needed.

Thanks @dalton. I've learned something today. I really had no clue that he had even been considered, briefly, for the part. I've only seen him in Homeland, and he's very good there.

I agree then, he must be a possibility going forward, because they have a tendency to go back to the well.

I am sure Craig will return. No Cavill, no Hiddleston, no Turner, or any other diversity stunt on the producers' part. It's all part of the game.

This is a case where I think they definitely should go back to the well. He's been very good on Homeland and would be, in my view, better than a lot of the candidates that have been bandied around so far. He's been my top choice for a while now and I'm ready to turn the page after the disaster that was Spectre, start over with a new Bond, a new director, new writers, and get the franchise heading in a brand new direction.

I've enjoyed Craig as Bond as I'm sure you have, but I'm with you. The series needs refreshing more than ever after SP, and I'm hoping they take this opportunity for that much needed shakeup. It's an exciting time to be a fan because the Craig era was self-contained, and if they recast they have a lot of options with direction.

So to sum up your statement above a white person playing a part traditionally associated with a particular ethnicity (eg Shaft) is unacceptable but a minority (as long as it is black apparently) playing Bond is fine?

After we have had a black Bond for 50 years will it eventually become acceptable to clamour for a white Bond again because it's a disgrace in 2066 that Bond is always played by a black actor?

If only we hadn't come to this notion of Bond being a hero, instead of a interesting protagonist non of this would have happened. I doubt they be campaigning for a black Bond if he was anything like he was in the books.
