I thought Dalton was the coolest looking Bond. As I've said before: dangerous, feline-like features. When his shirt was off in LTK, I thought he had a face like a man, and the body of a little boy.
Far from harming the movie, it made the movie.
That's because Bond films aren't made for hardcore fans, they are made for the cinema going public in general, and believe me that scene was the most famous scene in the film and became one of the most iconic moments in 21st century film. Surely that is where Bond should be? Up there competing with the best?
So, you may not like it, but it isn't a 'crime' and it isn't 'hilarious'.
I think the Bond films are made for all and there is a Bond film and Bond actor for everyone.i guess the succes of the Craig films and his portrayal have been stranslating very well the Bond of the novels to the big screen.
Sean Connery, Roger Moore and George Lazenby were just based on the character of the novels. Cubby and terrenceYoung got what would people like from the character of the novels to put on the Cinemmatic Bond with a few transformations for each actor.
Dalton was full on the Bond of the novels and it didnt translate very well on the big screen because at that time they didn't know to do it then. So they took a break and went back to the cinemmatic Bond latter Barbara Broccoli got a second chance and found her way to put on the big screen a succesful adaptation of the Bond from the novels on film.
At least thats the way i see it.

All a matter of taste. It doesn't - for whatever reason - do a lot for me, but when the film was released, it sure helped highten the hype. And make DC the new heartthrob.
It sure helped the film and his popularity back then.
But it has become an iconic image. It was hyped and much talked about at the time. It was the moment women discovered Daniel Craig, believe me.
Dalton may look like Fleming's Bond, but no one (especially women) talked about his shirtless scene in LTK, and however much it may offend our fundamental beliefs, cinema Bond is a different animal to book Bond. Always has been always will be.
Purists on this forum can't get their heads round that. BB keeps Bond as close to Fleming as she can, but she knows that she has to look after an audience who have no idea who Ian Fleming is. And if they know they don't care.
It's just a fact of Bond life.

If that is the scene CR is remembered by, by the general public, then it doesn't do the movie justice.

Well, the public remember moments, because they probably will only ever watch the film once or twice in their lives. So, yes, chances are that's what they will remember.
I see and respect your point. Didn't hit me one way or the other except as another Honey Ryder Dr. No reference similar to the Berry one in just the previous film.

If he were somehow alive today, I don't think Fleming would necessarily be against a black Bond in 2016. When it came to the movies he was a pragmatist. Sean Connery was not his idea of Bond, but he accepted him in the role, especially after a female acquaintances gave him her approval and the movies became hits. In 1962 having a black actor as Bond would have negatively affected the box office. Today it might increase it and also create positive publicity for the series--two things Fleming would have welcomed.
