I think that's why they call them teasers. I think they showed too much of a part of it, actually. I didn't need to see Klaw being broken out.

Very interesting, not much reaction to really share. Wakanda will be interesting, and I look forward to seeing all the stunt work from both the male and female fighters on Panther's side. It'll be compelling to see T'Challa try to balance being a new king and a protector of a different sort, and I hope that duality is explored. I was also bopping my head to the hip-hop styled music at the end, which should've have fit the tone, yet did.

I'll be reading a lot of the old comics soon as the character interests me, and I want to know where Panther came from to know how the live action version of him may go.

@Brady get your hands on the Lee/Kirby books, McGregor, Priest and Hudlin...especially Priest. Don't bother with Coates' run its garbage.

@doubleoego, I'm going to order this from Amazon:

    https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51-RhYepsqL.jpg

It collects the first Black Panther appearance by Lee and Kirby where he meets the Fantastic Four, and includes the Jungle Action run of McGregor that I've heard great things about. I think it'll be a great starting point to see Panther at his debut on, as I hear that the film will pull more from the vintage than modern, given that those comics are what Coogler grew up reading as a kid.

What is up with the newer Coates run? I was really interested in checking those out, especially for the art, and I'd like to hear what your gripes with them were.

The trailer lost me when the first space ship took off.
People are dressed up to remind me of Zulu warriors but look much less impressive than the real ones. I was expecting more expression of forces of nature through the participating humans. Boseman looks badass allright, but all the others look very cheap.
All in all I get a strong run-off-the-mill feeling.

Great choice of book to order. Panther's rage is a classic!

My beef with Coates' work is that first of all he doesn't even like BP and as such decided to force a false narrative in "deconstructing" the character and Wakanda itself. He turned T'Challa into a mopey, incompetent, milqutoast failure of a character that struggles with z-list villains. Coates is a good writer but he has no imagination for fiction, can't write action and writes poorly paced and boring, drawn out arcs with underwhelming payoffs. His views are that of someone who doesn't want to depict a positive image of a competent, intelligent and incredibly formidable black character and has opted to just ignore the significance of the mythology; carelessly contradicted important established plot points and narrative beats and has no head for Afrofuturism. Had Coates been a white guy, he would have been labelled a racist for sure by multitudes of long time fans. He is by far the worst writer to write BP, not even Hickman took things this far. It's so sad and frustrating that Marvel editorial greenlit his crap. I can't wait for the day he leaves but I suspect he'll be around for a while. Urgh!

@doubleoego, I didn't know the Coates run had issues. How has the fan community reacted to it? I know that he was a strange choice, as he's a journalist who has often focused on issues surrounding the black race, right? A very strange move for Marvel to get a guy from a world of research and hard realities to one of creative fiction with a focus on imagination and playing with ideas that aren't necessarily of our world. A man can write a great piece on race culture in America, but that doesn't mean he'll deliver gold when you hand him the premier black hero of Marvel's catalogue that plays to a whole new skill set than what he's ever used as a writer. Upon hearing that he wasn't a fiction writer who'd been at it for years, I was concerned to know if he failed to create interesting fictional characters, tell compelling arcs and stage the action impressively. From your perspective, he seems not to have.

I may still check out the new Coates run anyway, once I cover the other ground with the older comics. I'm far more interested in what McGregor brought to the table, as his work is really what I love seeing in comics: big pages that are drawn like ornamental masterpieces filled with unending boxes of text giving you lore and character background in ample amounts. His run on Panther seems to have really combined the comic medium with the way stories are told in literature, in the way that Frank Miller and Alan Moore did at their best, showing that comics are a true art form. That has me very excited indeed, and I've always meant to check into the comics at some stage anyway, as I really like the idea of Wakanda and T'Challa and how unique he is in the superhero world. With the film on the way, what better moment to jump on it.

I may run suggestions past you or give impressions at times, as you're the authority on the character around here and I appreciate your perspective on what to read to get the best sense of him and his world.

This trailer is everything. Its different, unique...a real game changer! In lesser hands they would have botched this but seeing Wakanda, the aesthetic, the advanced technology and Afrofuturism and the people...they did the 50 years of source material justice. I can't wait for this film to drop.

I was excited for this, but that trailer is not quite doing it for me. Not convinced by the wardrobe, looks a little too fancy dress and not very lived in for my liking. Hopefully they'll tidy up the CGI too.

As someone who is very much in touch with their African roots (my parents are Nigerian) and who regularly wears traditional African clothing, the wardrobe most definitely isn't fancy dress. This trailer is withholding a lot back, rightfully so as its a teaser and will be showcasing authentic Masai, Himba, Dogan and Tuareg clothing.

As for the CGI. Filming finished less than a month ago and the film won't be released for another 8 months. All things considered this is looking excellent.

I don't have a problem with the clothing or the CGI. Sure, it looks a bit 'sanitized', but I'm fine with that. At least it's not gloomy/depressing like some of the other superhero efforts of late. It looks visually vibrant. There's a bit of SF in it too in places (interrogation scene, Shanghai at night and the Macau casino).

Did it? That's news to me also.

The way the interrogation scene is lit, the party scene (again the lighting as well as the colours) and the overhead fast speed shot into the city in combination recall the SF trailer to me. I don't think it's unintentional. That film's trailer was quite an advert for the film.

As a fan of film analysis I just don't like to assume things based out of context. I've heard people pick Bond films apart and say that certain things were recently done elsewhere, just from scenes where two people were talking. By taking context and style out of it, anything is a rip-off of anything.

If a comparison to the interrogation had to be made I'd pick TDK over SF any day because of that valuable context. The SF scene was downplayed and had no menace, but the scene from TDK did. But I won't assume that Black Panther is pilfering from Nolan just because the movie has two people in a room that has a two-way mirror. ;)

I don't recall saying it was pilfering. Perhaps your expertise and fandom of film analysis is causing you to see things that weren't intended. Of course perhaps I wasn't clear, which is why I clarified my remark.

Just so you don't misunderstand me further, I'll state my point more clearly for you. There's a bit of the SF trailer in this trailer. Some of the ways the scenes are lit, the way the interrogation scene is interspersed with the action, and the party scene in particular (which recalls Macau) evoke SF and its trailer in particular.

Hopefully that's clearer to you now.

I didn't mean fancy dress in a derogatory way, I think traditional African clothing is absolutely class (I love seeing the Nigerians outside church on a Sunday - makes you smile) It just wasn't quite working for me in its presentation, rather than the actual aesthetic. I'm pretty sure the CGI will be as good as it can, I just hope it's used sparingly. I think my expectations for this are possibly too high, hence the nitpicking.

One of the interesting things about this film or at least the concept of Wakanda are the various tribes that make up the country that have their own individual styles. It's going to be quite the exciting challenge and I guess quite a lot of pressure to deliver on the variations. In any case I understand having high expectations and any nitpicking that comes along with it. It's what we do, especially moreso as Bond fans but all in all I'm in full agreement with you with this post. I hope we get some exciting but not too much stuff at comic con and D23.

Am I the only one who thinks that Ryan Coogler is borrowing quite liberally from Sam Mendes. There are scenes which seem to borrow directly from Skyfall......

Just an observation, but the visual similarities are clearly there. Obviously Deakins' work is masterful compared to Marvel's junkyard cinematography.

I think it makes sense that Coogler - who is a fast-rising auteur in his own right - would look towards other respected directors who have worked in the big-budget arena for inspiration. Mendes did the same, with many noticing the similarities of SF with The Dark Knight.

Personally, Black Panther is one of the Marvel films I am most excited to see - mainly as I think we're going to get something with a clear and distinct point of view. Opposed to the typical generic cookie-cutter films they usually deliver.

You're not the only one. I mentioned a few posts earlier that I saw shades of SF's trailer in the trailer. The visual similarities are there in the sequences you mention. Also in the quick cut overhead shot into the city (Shanghai)

King T'Challa/Black Panther and Bruce Banner/The Hulk on the set of Infinity War.

I'd love a scene where these 2 and Stark have one of their epic advanced science-based theoretical problem solving discussions

The Russos in Wakanda for IW. We're definitely getting Thanos' Black Order against Wakanda...it's going to be incredible!

Marvel sees no rivalry between themselves and DC, and they haven't ruled out doing R-rated films:

Shame they never made a sequel with Ray Stevenson. He practically was Frank Castle ripped right out of the comics.
