This is who he was in the comics

Simon Williams starts out as a rival industrialist to Tony Stark (Iron Man). After his company fails, he’s manipulated by Baron Zemo and the Masters of Evil, who transform him into a being of pure ionic energy. Given immense strength and durability, he becomes Wonder Man — originally sent to infiltrate and destroy the Avengers from within.

However, Simon’s conscience wins out, and he sacrifices himself to save the Avengers — dying heroically in his first appearance.

I am guessing that they aren't following this for the series. Though that sounds like an interesting story.

In the comics he doesn’t stay dead for long (this is comics, after all). His consciousness is later restored, and he becomes a full-fledged Avenger. His powers include:

Superhuman strength (on par with Thor and Hulk)

    Invulnerability

    Ionic energy manipulation

    Flight (in later versions)

Immortality (his ionic body doesn’t age or tire)

One of the fun twists in his story is that Wonder Man becomes a Hollywood actor and stuntman, giving him a very different kind of fame from his teammates. This “celebrity superhero” angle often brings humor, vanity, and humanity to his character. This looks like what they are exploring in this version.

Marvel Studios has been developing a Wonder Man live-action series for Disney+, with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II cast as Simon Williams. The show is said to explore his life as a hero and Hollywood star, mixing satire with the superhero genre. But it would appear that Wonder Man won't have powers or by heroic? Interesting choice for them.

Course some may make a deal out of the fact that the character in the comics was Caucasian and is now being place by a POC.

Thank you, its give a lot more context to the two trailers.

From the trailer it looks like that's kind of the point, I guess there will be a backlash to his race and that'll be part of the story of the actual show.

It all looks a bit meta to me; like there have been other films and shows commenting on the superhero genre (like The Franchise) and now Marvel want even a piece of that pie; they can't even let other people spoof them.
