This is who he was in the comics

Simon Williams starts out as a rival industrialist to Tony Stark (Iron Man). After his company fails, he’s manipulated by Baron Zemo and the Masters of Evil, who transform him into a being of pure ionic energy. Given immense strength and durability, he becomes Wonder Man — originally sent to infiltrate and destroy the Avengers from within.

However, Simon’s conscience wins out, and he sacrifices himself to save the Avengers — dying heroically in his first appearance.

I am guessing that they aren't following this for the series. Though that sounds like an interesting story.

In the comics he doesn’t stay dead for long (this is comics, after all). His consciousness is later restored, and he becomes a full-fledged Avenger. His powers include:

Superhuman strength (on par with Thor and Hulk)

    Invulnerability

    Ionic energy manipulation

    Flight (in later versions)

Immortality (his ionic body doesn’t age or tire)

One of the fun twists in his story is that Wonder Man becomes a Hollywood actor and stuntman, giving him a very different kind of fame from his teammates. This “celebrity superhero” angle often brings humor, vanity, and humanity to his character. This looks like what they are exploring in this version.

Marvel Studios has been developing a Wonder Man live-action series for Disney+, with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II cast as Simon Williams. The show is said to explore his life as a hero and Hollywood star, mixing satire with the superhero genre. But it would appear that Wonder Man won't have powers or by heroic? Interesting choice for them.

Course some may make a deal out of the fact that the character in the comics was Caucasian and is now being place by a POC.

Thank you, its give a lot more context to the two trailers.

From the trailer it looks like that's kind of the point, I guess there will be a backlash to his race and that'll be part of the story of the actual show.

It all looks a bit meta to me; like there have been other films and shows commenting on the superhero genre (like The Franchise) and now Marvel want even a piece of that pie; they can't even let other people spoof them.

I have pretty much given up on Marvel during phase 5, the last TV show I fully watched was Loki season 2 and not watched any of the movies since Deadpool and Wolverine and skipped a few of the films from phase 4. The quality in writing took a deep nose dive for me.

I will give Wonder Man a chance as Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is a good actor and Ben Kingsley is amusing as Trevor.

The last one I watched was Ms Marvel, and I don’t think I got to the end of it. The TV shows feel even more dispensable than the films. I started Secret Invasion and it was terrible.
I did watch the Friendly Neighbourhood Spider Man cartoon a few weeks back when I had covid and it was enjoyable enough on my sickbed.

I watched Thunderbolts a couple of weeks back; just nothingy, although maybe slightly less bland than Captain America 4 which feels like a TV movie.

I watched the Sentry/The Void scenes on YouTube which were ok if a bit short, that's all I needed to see from Thunderbolts*.

Yeah, Superman has been the only decent superhero film recently, and it’s not amazing, but it did feel fresh in many ways at least.

Yeah I am curious how this all fits in? The original movie of Wonder Man seems to fit in the Fantastic 4 timeline. But the remake seems to be set in present day? Is this a way to bridge those two generations? How does the Fantastic Four end up in Avengers Doomsday.

I haven't seen any Disney Marvel Movies since...Spider-Man No Way Home? I did catch the OG Daredevil series. Also watched Hawkeye TV series. I have lost interest in the films and series as they have brought in characters that don't interest me or have characters I don't even know.

Well…, original Wonder Man movie definitely doesn't fit Fantastic 4 timeline because Fantastic Four (Earth 818) come from another universe than MCU (Earth 616).
I suspect the Fantastic Four will meet up with the rest of the MCU heroes through some kind of rift in space-time.

The Thunderbolts post-credit shows a rocket approaching Earth with a "4" logo on it (but it doesn't look like the rocket or logo from FF)

Fantastic Four's on Disney now; just gave it a watch. I thought it was better than Thunderbolts, but it's not what I hoped it would be at all. It's very uninvolving and quite flat really, the opening act feels like it's been cut to ribbons and the characters are kind of presented to you rather than introduced, I just didn't care about them. Towards the end, Sue has to give a speech to mankind which put the entire world on her side, but she says nothing which would actually do that, and yet they all clap at the end. It's very curious.
Superman is surprisingly similar in tone and yet absolutely nails it, it feels so much more fresh and energetic than this, and although it had problems, I came out of it really liking the central character and wanting to see more of him. With these four I feel nothing at all.

There's a QR code at the end which leads to some free comics if you want more.

I will give First Steps a watch as I have a Disney + subscription currently because of Only Murders In The Building. F4 will be the first MCU content I have watched this year.

Edited: I lasted 1 minute and switched it off, I will stick to my Tim Story Blu-ray's.

Well colour me surprised..absolutely loved F4 First Steps

Best superhero film i've seen in a long time!

Everything mostly works like a charm in this confident production. Loved the retro/futuristic look of the film. The cast nail it big time. Wonderful chemistry from the Fab 4. I thought Vanessa Kirby was the stand out and steals the entire film IMO.

Some really cool set pieces that aren't overwhelming, some wonderful humour straight out of the comics and a really deft origin sequence shot in a super 8 newsreel style that takes us through the F4's creation in a few minutes.

    Marvellous entertainment!

As it’s recently joined Disney + I decided to give Fantastic Four - First Steps a go.
This is the third go at bringing Fantastic Four to the big screen after 2005 and 2015. Neither of the previous instalments hit the mark, and the latest entry hasn’t for me either.
The cast is solid and it’s not a poorly made film. It’s just boring.
My biggest gripe is that I just didn’t care about any of the characters, they’re just dropped on us having yada yada yada something in space and returned to earth with superpowers.
I wonder if it’s due to them being a group? With Superman, Spider-Man, Batman et al they work alone, they have a single origin story. The FF just came back from space with powers as a group. Why do I (as the viewer) care?
Superman 2025 did it so much better and was by far the better superhero I’ve seen this year.

After years of being deeply invested in the MCU, I fell off a few years ago. I’m a film guy, not a series guy, yet Disney+ keeps assigning me homework, and it’s usually mediocre at best. Same goes for Star Wars. I’ll eventually catch up (I’m rewatching the entire MCU right now), but I’m already dreading the moment I have to sit through Moon Knight, Loki, and several others again.

I want these leisurely distractions to adapt to my life, not the other way around. I sigh every time another MCU or Star Wars series gets announced. Great, more work. And yes, I know nobody is forcing me to watch them. But as a fan of both, I can’t just pretend they don’t exist either.

This is my biggest fear about Amazon’s Bond project. All I want is a good film every couple of years. When minor characters start getting their own eight-hour TV shows, I have trouble working up the proper motivation to take it all in.

So anyway, I'm at Thor: The Dark World again. I'm still grooving with these early phases. I remember the exciting days when it was all fresh and new. I fondly remember the feast that was 2012's The Avengers, the first time we pulled "so many" different characters into a single superhero film. It's become common place now. The magic is lost.

I hope DC takes center stage again. And yes, I regret the fact that Snyder's vision wasn't given the time and patience to develop its own path. DC had something great going there, in my opinion.

I decided to give the film another go, I struggled with the first 30 minutes I think the casting is not great unfortunately. Saying all that the space scenes were pretty good to be fair, being a sci fi fan I appreciated the Galactus first meeting there were a few awesome moments.

I do enjoy the retro future from a visual point of view.

It's funny, I usually like retro future so I thought I'd enjoy the film visually at least, but I thought the design did a bit of an 'off' job: the look of it all put me more in mind of Eastern European or even Russian mid-century style rather than western style. There was something a bit bleak and empty to a lot of the designs I thought, even Reed's big lab felt sort of imperialistic in some way rather than light and airy- I found it strangely oppressive. And the film opens in that bathroom with the pregnancy test being revealed and I thought the bathroom looked, again, rather bleak and sort of municipal rather than luxurious. I couldn't get on with the design.
Another thing that annoyed me was that the Baxter Building seemed to be full of circular rooms: their bedrooms and bathrooms and living space etc. were all circular. Well how do those fit together in a building with a square footprint? I know it's a film and you shouldn't get hung up on these things but it keep nagging at me- "well how does the room the other side of that wall look???" :D

Yeah, agreed about casting too. I like Pascal (the thing about him being over-exposed is a bit silly I think) but I didn't think he really brought anything to this. Also I think Sue's character was perhaps a bit too flawless and perfect, laughing at the guys- she sort of felt like she'd been written by a man.

One thing I wasn't keen on:
the plot was solved by Reed happening to have invented a teleport. I think that's rubbish writing, you don't have the key to victory being something the good guy happens to magically invent: that's a deus ex machina. It's much more satisfying if the means to victory comes from something in the plot which has reason to exist. The teleport has no particular relevance to Galactus either, so in theory Reed should use on every baddie from now on.
If using the teleporter had somehow attracted the Surfer's attention, or Galactus used teleportation himself or something and Reed uses the tech, then fine; but to just have it conveniently lying around, nah. I was really underwhelmed by that decision.
