Most certainly, Major. I'd also include 2005 for FRWL.

FRWL certainly had it's good points. But EA should have toned down the action to make it a spy thriller like the film. Parts like the Gypsy Camp translated perfectly fine to the game. The train shootout however,,,

I did really like the option to change Bonds clothing once you had found the clothing sets. You can't beat going into battle, with Bond immaculately dressed in his dinner jacket.
I agree. FRWL will always be a great game for me just because it's set in the early 1960s and features Connery as Bond. However, I don't see the logic in trying to make a game based on FRWL when TB itself was the more action packed adventure.

...Or even better they should've come up with an original storyline.

Yes, exactly. Set it between films, with it not being based on any one film, but capturing the era it is apart of (like like EON being Brosnans 5th Bond) and that would have allowed EA to get away with piling on the action.
I couldn't agree more, Major. And preferably they should have used (and rightfully they did) the Connery portrait of the first two films and avoid the subsequent ones. They should have made a game where the action elements are incorporated well into the story and would make sense, instead they turned a Cold War spy thriller into a Schwarzenegger flick. Apples and oranges. Doesn't work.

That's one thing that confuses me about FRWL. They picked the lowest action Bond film of the 60's to adapt into a video game. I can actually see a reason why they might have avoided GF; It's almost too iconic to touch. No matter how good the game was, it likely would never be seen as good enough by fans. To leave TB on the table, however, is strange. I also think they could have done something interesting with YOLT.
I don't think GF would've worked, either, as it merely has any action scene, if at all any to begin with. In fact, neither of the early few Bond films (and the Craig films for the matter, as QoS the game proved us) would work as video games. It would only butcher the storylines in a bad way, so it's better if neither of the games follow any movie's plot.

An original story would have been best for sure but if they had to do a film I think GF would have been best. FRWL was doomed from the start (they couldn't even say SPECTRE ffs). Even though there isn't that much action in GF, they would have had enough leeway there for them to expand on bits and add action without it being jarring (they could flesh out/extend the PTS or Bond snooping around in Switzerland or example). Honestly though I want a Bond game with less action. There's so much more to Bond than just mowing down bad guys with the odd car chase. Nightfire and Everything Or Nothing were big steps in the right direction but then for some reason the games regressed back to mindless action. I want to be able to gamble in casinos, to seduce the villains girlfriend through dialogue options, to blend in undercover, to check a hotel room for bugs, etc. I'd love a telltale Bond game or one done by another company that interactive movie/TV series style (but maybe with a bit more interactivity/freedom).

I was about to completely agree with you, @thelivingroyale, until you mentioned TellTale. :))

I don't think the display of the Bond games are TV/Episodic material as Bond theatrically/cinematically/screen-wise is not ready for that format, yet. A more RPG based FP/TP combo would be nice with shooter and driving elements but focusing more on spying and stealthiness. I love Everything or Nothing to death, but the game certainly wasn't a spy game. Nightfire was. EoN, sadly, wasn't. There was hardly any relevance for stealth. Just aim and shoot.

What I'd like from a Bond game is to have the agility, spirit, luxuriousness and fun element of the PS2/GCN/Xbox era EA Bond games, with the openness of the latest Hitman title. A very large sandbox, multiple ways to infiltrate a base, area, hotel, building, whatever, as well as dozens of routes and turnouts for the storyline depending on the player's choices, much like Alpha Protocol. Seduce sexy women, gamble at casinos, playing baccarat, poker, blackjack, roulette, etc. And most of all, wear clothes of your choice. For example, I want to infiltrate a military base dressed in a suit, not commando gear. FRWL got that part right. That should be there, too.

What I wouldn't want is a point and click Bond game. An interactive movie that I despise more than anything else. Honestly, I found TellTale's Batman game very boring, to say the least.

Yeah don't get me wrong I can understand why Telltale games are divisive (to be fair I haven't played Batman, only The Walking Dead), I just really like the story driven approach and the idea that playing out a conversation can be just as gripping, if not more, than a big action setpiece. Maybe something like Mass Effect? Choices and dialogue options but you still get to move around and control the character normally. From what I remember Alpha Protocol was that sort of thing too so I agree with you on the direction they should take there.

I agree on EON being a step down from Nightfire in a lot of ways (despite all the effort they went to in making it a really cinematic experience, it feels a lot more video gamey with the plot structure and the scenarios imo) but there was still a nice amount of variety there imo. Bits like where you're trapped on the table and have to use the coin gadget to escape, or the fist fight with Jaws on the train, or being able to stop and give a woman a massage when you're breaking into the club. That's the stuff made the game for me and that's what I meant when I talked about them continuing in the direction Nightfire started in terms of actually feeling like Bond instead of a mass murderer. If we do get another Bond game I want a lot more emphasis on that side of things.

I still think the castle level in Nightfire is the blueprint for a near perfect Bond game. There's so many different options and it just feels so Bondanian (we see Bond at luxury parties/events all the time in the films but Nightfire is the only Bond game to centre a level around it, I remember Bloodstone had a brief bit like that but literally as soon as the level started you were moving down a linear path gunning down bad guys again). It captures almost everything that makes Bond great and I can't imagine how amazing it would be if they took that approach with modern tech and included even more little touches like those moments from Everything Or Nothing. It's so sad that with the amazing stuff games are capable of nowadays noone seems to want to go near Bond. I never want them to stop producing the films but I think it's clear that EON don't have a clue when it comes to the games. Instead of shitty tie ins/cash cows the Bond games could become a huge franchise in its own right (they came close before) but they don't see that potential and seem all too willing to let companies like Activision run the licence into the ground.

I couldn't agree more, @thelivingroyale, with the Austrian Castle infiltration level, or The Exchange as called in the Console versions (although I prefer the name of the PC version, Rendezvous for its distinctive uniqueness in verbal comparison), is the greatest level in the entirety of the James Bond video game series. It embodies the feel of being a spy, having to infiltrate and resort to combat when required, without downplaying your ability in either skills. It's the perfect Bond level.

Amazing to hear the original names of this level (in the french version of the game, this level is called Un accueil glacial - A glacial welcome ).

Even a better name. Sort of a play on "Cold Reception". A name used for levels in two titles. TWINE and AUF.

Yep, and in the levels of TWINE et AUF in french version are called Un accueil glacial too, gess that the tranlators like this name.

Agent Under Fire was supposed to (initially anways) be a PS2 port of The world is not enough but since it wouldn't be released till I think 2001 EA figured no one would want to buy a movie tie in to a film that was 2 years old and already had a good game so they began to repurpose it to it's own thing though some things remain (my guess is the underwater on rail moment is a reskin of what was going to be the oil pipline level) also explains why there are a ton of similarities between Agent under fire and TWINE as well as more then a few plot holes.

I tried over the weekend to get a working PS1 emulator/game but after nearly downloading a few viruses from freeroms.com I have officially given up.

I really am saddened by a lack of bond games/ espionage games but then I think at least I grew up with the games and got to play when they were fresh

    Goldeneye
    Mission Impossible
The World is not Enough (never had a ps1)
    Agent Under Fire
    NightFire
    Mission Impossible Operation Sumera
    Splinter Cell (all 6 games)
    etc

Do I wish we got games based off of Amis-Horrowitz novels based either in that time or in the present and updated (though how Nobody live forever would be updated is beyond me as isn't Princess Di integral to the plot)

yeah but I know the days of espionage games are sadly gone (which is a shame as there is at least 10 espionage games I would love to see done in the next 5 years b ut oh well)

Yes we were very lucky to have grown up with such amazing games! Mission Impossible on the N64 was hard but extremely fun. Mission Impossible: Operation Sumera was one of the coolest games at the time. The first four Splinter Cell games are amazing but Conviction and Black List are too easy and focus on fast paced action too much. They had great stories though.

I have a feeling the spy/espionage genre will make a come back in video games someday. I just hope it's soon.

I wish the nightfire reloaded thing was still going on

Nightfire: Source still is. Reloaded were only campaign leader guys, not developers. Their demand was to urge Activision to make a new Nightfire game. There was no way they could have achieved that since Nightfire is a shared product of Danjaq and Electronic Arts. A case not dissimilar to GoldenEye 007 on the N-64.

    If only.

But, apparently, they don't have enough budget to build up on it. And adding to that there'd be lawsuit threats from MGM for using story material and lines from their own property, so to speak. Or so I heard.

    I need some opinions.

There is a modification for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas called Design Your Own Mission that allows users to create their own missions, objectives, and stories. I am planning to make a standalone Bond story with that modification as the diverse gameplay of GTA allows for many great situations.

Now take a look at this:

    Higher Quality Closeups

I need you to do 2 things.
    1. Take one of those characters which you think gives the overall image of James Bond. Whether it's Ian Fleming's depiction or any others.

    2. Assign each characters to one Bond actor (that means leaving 1 out)
i.e Character 1 looks like Brosnan and Character 2 looks like Moore, etc.

#6 is pretty good. He's the only one that has a face that is anywhere close to Bond-like.

#5 is dressed exactly like Michael Weston from Burn Notice.

No one else looks like anybody to me.
  • edited May 2017 Posts: 70
Yeah, I agree that none of these characters look like any Bond actors, but if you had to assign each one to a Bond actor, which one would you choose? I'd say like #2 is Lazenby because of the posture and #3 is Brosnan or Craig. I am asking because I am planning to do some 007 Legends style missions in the mod, but with my own take on it, of course.

The plan is to have the original story with the 1st character which has the overall James Bond look and some bonus Legends style missions with those other characters.

Anyway #6 has one vote for the overall James Bond image. Any other opinions?
I have edited my original post with higher quality closeups of the characters.

Should I create my own thread for this?

I agree with @BMW_with_missiles, in that not many of those models give off a Bondian feeling. #1 looks Latino and #2 is built like a brickhouse, #3 looks wimpy, #4 and #5 are different ethnicities and #7 has facial hair.

#6 is the only choice that comes close to anything Bond related, but he's also got on a rather garish vest coat.
The choice is quite limited since those are all the normal looking average guys in suits that are in the game.

Anyone? Should I go with #6 and create a topic for it once there's enough progress? Or should I open up my own topic for the voting of the James Bond skin? If all else fails, you can install an actual Bond skin mod by somebody else.

Do you find it eligible to resort to a mod, mate? Like picking up Daniel Craig's or Pierce Brosnan's Bond?

If someone doesn't like any of the characters above they can go the extra length of installing an actual James Bond skin. There are a few floating online, mostly ports from the existing James Bond games.

I think that'd be a great way to go. You should be able to get Sean, Pierce and Dan easily, but all the others will have to be worked around with look-alikes, I guess. Unless people have designed ones for George, Roger and Tim.

I was recently playing Prey, and as much as I love this game, I found myself sorely missing a new Bond game. I was stalking through the rafters and I used my psychoscope to zoom in on something I needed to read, and I thought to myself, "Man this would be awesome if it was part of a cool new Bond game." There's something unique about Bond games. In most games, you're playing from a position of weakness. Your character is out matched and going against the odds. Not with Bond games. With Bond games, you're playing as the legend that is 007, and your character's victory is inevitable. I miss that powerful feeling when playing a game.

Our best chance is if a developer comes around to make a series of spy games that rip off the old 007 ones. I just want a cool third person spy game period, as they just aren't made anymore.

even the Splinter Cell Franchise is DOA and wasn't Rockstar going to a video game called Agent which got taken out back and shot...
