Rank the Guy Hamiton Bonds films (Poll added)

edited November 2011 in Trivia & Games Posts: 2,341
Ugh, this is fairly easy for us. But lets give it a go
1. GOLDFINGER

2.LALD
3.TMWTGG

4. DAF

I left the space between the others to show the considerable drop off after GF. Can't say his films got progressively worst because DAF marked the nadir of his directional efforts. Maybe he was hampered by the bogus scripts.

    001) GF
    002) TMWTGG
    003) DAF
    004) LALD
  • 1- GF

    2- TWMWTGG

    3- LALD

    4- DAF
  • Goldfinger, Live and Let Die, Man with Golden Gun, Diamonds. He was also originally set to direct Superman until production left Italy. He was a UK tax exile at the time. His Bonds disregard the fantasy and Bond would never dressed as a Clown (My series lowpoint) in one of his films.

I hope we're judging on directing abilities, and not ranking our likeness of the films -_-

On directing, as in NOT storyline:

GOLDFINGER -Shot beautifully, and for the time shot very well.

As far as the rest go, you couldn't tell they were done by the same guy.
TMWTGG -Overall meh on cinematography and direction
DAF -props for the challenge of filming in Vegas AND on an oil rig. But the CGI is just un-passable.. but that is mostly budgetary issues.
LALD -nothing significant. Could of been anybody directing.

    1. Goldfinger

    (x2)

    2. Live and Let Die

    3. Diamonds Are Forever

    4. The Man With the Golden Gun

    Seems about right ;)
  • Didn't we do something similar to this yesterday

In any event, best Hamilton picture for me was Live and Let Die, can't really argue as it's my favorite 007 adventure

In second place comes Golden Gun by some distance, then Diamonds and finally Goldfinger

Just for arguments sake and for subsequent Director polls :

Young - From Russia With Love

Gilbert - The Spy Who Loved Me

    Campbell - Casino Royale

I believe anyone else only directed the once so obviously we can't pick and choose

Well that changes things. The title is "Rank the Guy Hamilton films". I actually agree, I think GF is probably his best directed film in that it's the tighest and is the most evenly paced. I also would rank GF highly because it has Mr. Hamilton's stamp all over it: he brought a level of iconography to the series, as another member pointed out in the 11/10 thread.

I rank DAF highly as well, because it has the campy feel and style of Guy Hamilton that he started with GF: but also because it has a lot else going for it: exceptionally clever script, actor's performances, music, among other things.

LALD and TWTGG are definitely unmistakably Guy Hamilton directed films: whacky over the top characters, gags, strong emphasis of dialogue between characters, outrageous stunts and an overall 'colorfulness' to the movies. But with Die and Golden Gun, the whole is unfortunately less than the sum of their parts, and even several of the parts fall flat. IMHO of course

Baron Samedi? Blofeld clones? Diamond satellites? Sporting a dry clean tuxedo replete with fresh carnation under a wetsuit? :?

I think fantasy abounded quite a bit in Hamilton's Bond films.

  • 1.) GF/ DAF
    2.) TMWTGG
    3.) LALD

GF and DAF are one and two, respectively, on my Bond list, but they are practically equal in every sense of the word.

    (further down the list)

    3. Goldfinger
    4. The Man with the Golden Gun
  • Not a fan of Guy Hamilton and think his films rank towards the bottom of the series. However, Goldfinger is his best followed by TMWTGG and LALD, with DAF way at the bottom.

I think. To be honest, I don't really know without watching them all again. I really don't like The Man With The Golden Gun aside from Moore's perfromance, that much I do know.

EDIT: Can we get a poll for this, too?

Also, can we rank the 2 Martin Campbell films somewhere? It would be interesting to see how that turns out.

I agree. A poll would be great.

    1. Casino Royale
    2. GoldenEye

That's it. Though some would differ, many would 'rank' them in that order.

    Directing and how much I liked them;

    Goldfinger
    Live and Let Die
The Man With The Golden Gun
    Diamonds Are Forever.

The last two, in particular, features some shoddy continuity and sight gags.

    1) GF

This is the Bond that cemented the formula and pushed Bond to a higher level of popularity and glamour. It's an enjoyable classic in every respect and as such, it's my number one Hamilton film.

    2) DAF

Like a woman you consider ugly at first, then fall madly in love with because she's great in bed, DAF is a Bond film I had to get accustomed to - but now I love it in every way.

    3) LALD

    Solitaire.

    Solitaire.

    Solitaire.

    4) TMWTGG

    Mèh...
  • They're 4 very polarizing films. GF and LALD were great but DAF and TMWTGG were two of the weakest films in the series.
