John Barry’s scores weren’t really anything special until You Only Live Twice.

I disagree with that. I think FRWL already shows Barry's brilliance. But the power injected in his GF and TB scores is phenomenal. I consider them very special and ahead of their time in almost every regard.

Everything Barry did was special. Other than Star Wars, I can't think of another title song or tune as impactful as the opening of GF.

I'd add Morricone's theme tune for Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo to that list, but that's as far as I go too.

TB is also one of my very favourite Bond scores, so atmospheric and mysterious, I love it.

Luftwaffe march - battle of Britain.

Not sure that one carries any weight outside of the UK. I've never seen the movie.

As much as I like Ken Adam, he doesn't work that much on Bond films.

I think this theme would be the one that deserves that honor.

Congrats. Doesn't mean most of the world has ever heard of that song.

Well, in aviation circles it is extremely well known. Slightly behind Top Gun (obviously). And that's not only in Europe, but worldwide.

I'd say there's been quite a few movie tunes as impactful and iconic as Goldfinger (and indeed I think most would probably rate the James Bond theme itself above that), but it's subjective I guess.

I would say I do. James Bond Theme first, and then GF and NDIB.

Other immediately recognisable stuff could include Jaws, The Godfather, La dolce vita, Star Wars, some spaghetti western scores by Morricone, and probably quite a few more too.

Doesn't take anything away from the fact that the 007 series has some immortal tunes attached to it, ofc ;)

I don't think you can back that up. It is hardly comparable to Top Gun in terms of pop culture awareness and popularity these days, be real.

    Google proves me right: https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=/m/01jwxx,/m/018js4&hl=en

My only context for this movie is Jeremy Clarkson's obsession with it on Top Gear, and that was already over a decade ago as well.

Why do I genuinely believe this an opinion you hold? 😉 I’m kidding of course.

Obviously all Bond fans are degenerates and will never grow up.

    NDIB?

I agree though, plus a number of TV themes

Lalo Schiffen's original version of "Mission Impossible" would be top 5 for me

The "Thunderbird March" might not be so well known among younger folk these days, on the other hand there was rebooted TV series as recently as 2020

    Dr Who of course

The theme to the old Western series "The Virginian", called "Lonesome Tree" by Percy Faith, is also a fixture in my all time top 5

Nobody Does It Better. It’s an interesting point of GoldenGun’s that, alongside GF, it might be the most iconic Bond theme with the biggest life beyond the films. I guess maybe LALD might be up there too? Funny how it’s not necessarily the Barry ones.
  • QBranchQBranch Always have an escape plan. Mine is watching James Bond films.

True about NDIB. I was aware of that many years before discovering Bond. One that does the rounds on easy listening stations.

Doh! Of course, yes, I was thinking in movie title mode...

I'm with you there, they are the biggies for me too

But I imagine other generations may feel the same about AVTAK (a US #1 hit song), YNMN or SF (first Bond Oscar winner)

I don’t think YKMN would feature; although fans like it, it’s not terribly well-known I’d say.

Many people knew LALD through the Guns N' Roses version.

GF, NDIB are sure Bond classics. LALD would be a good addition. I find AVTAK is a strong contender, along with SF over YKMN..

Nobody Does It Better...That's the song that sparked my interest in Bond music...
