    The Trio - Ennio Morricone

On leave and listening to The Maestro's music today, I still get chills listening to this.

    Ramon

One of the greatest villain introductions.

Last week I happened upon a program on Arte dedicated to John Barry's music and one of the excerpts shown was from this 1966 spy thriller which I've never heard of.
Not surprisingly, it reminded me a lot of the theme for The Ipcress File, so naturally I had to listen to the whole soundtrack on YT.
The movie was also available to watch on YT so I gave it a go... unfortunately, it turned out to be a poor man's Ipcress File with Barry's music its only saving grace, despite featuring the likes of Alec Guinness and Max von Sydow.
But now I am completely obsessed with this fantastic score and I've already ordered the cd on eBay.

I really like 'The Quiller Memorandum', it's fairly engrossing Spy thriller, scripted by Harold Pinter. Love the opening scene, with George Sanders discussing the killing of their agent , while talking about the quality of hs lunch. Plus it has a film stealing turn from Alec Guinness discussing with Quiller ( Segal) his dilemma with the aid of currant buns!
And Barrys score is excellent as you would expect!

I personally enjoyed The Quiller Memorandum more than The Ipcress File. I think the latter is pretty overrated. Outside of some interesting camera angles and the excellent Barry score it’s pretty forgettable. Quiller is a solid little spy thriller. Can’t go wrong with Max Von Sydow as a baddie (remember Three Days of the Condor?) and Senta Berger was beautiful. And of course the excellent as always Barry score!

Ah, but 'The Ipcress File' has Michael Caine as Harry Palmer. Much as I like George Segal as Quiller, he doesn't come anywhere near as entertaining as Caines 'Spy with glasses and no money!" to quote the man himself!

Caine was fine I suppose. But it’s the material that he has to work with that doesn’t really do it for me. A lot of it is a pretty dull affair.

One of my favorite soundtracks of all time is finally getting an expanded release next month, which includes this alternate take of the magnificent main theme.

    Dueling Banjos

I picked up Deliverance soundtrack on CD last week.

I had this on LP for many years, although apart from Duelling Banjos, it's just an album of Bluegrass standards. None of which were in the film.

There's never been an official soundtrack because there's not enough music in the film to justify one..!

I had never heard of this film until last week. I actually enjoyed it. The soundtrack has been in my head ever since. Johnny Keating had limited film credits, but this one is a standout.

Not sure I have seen the film Hotel, I vaguely recall a TV show called Hotel. Those tracks are pretty good, I like that late 60'searly 70's sound.

Another gem from Barry, taken from his score to Deadfall, an obscure 1968 neo noir, starring Michael Caine as a cat burglar.

Yeh, saw the film, it's an odd one, and not great, but Barry always delivers!

I saw it as well and found it... hmm, at least somewhat intriguing. But yes, Barry was at the height of his powers in the second half of the sixties.

Another fine example of his ability to craft instantly memorable themes, even for bigger bombs such as this one, also from 1968.

This was such an important release by quartet, the best rerecord barry score to date it deserved a better buying response to ensure more of his lesser known gems could be released in the same way such as A Jolly Bad Fellow for instance.

Just listening to A Jolly Bad Fellow on TIDAL, it is not on any of the John Barry compilation albums I own, I will have to address that. I will buy John Barry The Ultimate Collection which has that track and an incredible 91 tracks in total.

The recording of Seance on a wet afternoon on 24bit is very good indeed, incredible clarity. I don't know much about the re release of the Score, I bought it on a whim today.
