I have zero issues with his look or his voice, it's whether he has the chops to be the lead in a big movie I'm more concerned about. The evidence so far points to no.

He stole the screen every time he and Brad Pitt were in a scene in BT. They had so good dynamic that they used them both as a pair for most interviews and press junkets.

If I had seen Elizabeth in 98 I would never had though that guy could be a leading man in his own franchise, and still Craig showed us better.

I don't think there's much chance of Mr Fukunaga being involved.

Neither do I. Courting controversy is not something they are likely to do. And with Fukunaga's more recent 'bad press', that's what they would do if they brought him back.
Of course, there's the "inappropriate behavior" controversy as reported in the Rolling Stone to consider, if true.

Until it's cleared up, they won't touch him. A shame this is happening as I quite liked him as a Bond director.

Paul Haggis is definitely not writing the script...

I think it will be Purvis Wade and Walker for scripting duties if I had to guess

    Atj looks good

Ahhh, @Univex the long lost son. I have missed you, at certain times even more, but that's thankfully behind us now. Welcome back brother man. Still fond of Turner as well, or? I reckon we all are thirsting for more (credible) snippets of news. Hopefully things get going soon!

Brother of mine, my friend, good to read you; still a fan of Turner, of course, but I don’t believe they’ll choose any actor from that age range. Luke Evans or Turner would be perfect if they did choose someone in his 40s.

And you are right, of course, we really are thirsty for some news. Especially real news, and good ones at that.

    Cheers

These pictures work for me. The retro style suits him well. Not unlike Cavill in MFU I'd say.

The times when he has played the lead in a film show him to be rather lacking; he is good in supporting roles, such as Nocturnal Animals where he's great. Not really comparable to Craig who had played leads in several big films and miniseries and was consistently strong.

After my recent Bondathon and Craig's lengthy era, it's still so surreal to me that we're discussing who the next Bond is going to be.

Haha good point @peter! I do have to say if you guys haven’t already, you should definitely watch Nowhere Boy. It was the film where Aaron met his now wife, Sam, who directed the film. It was a biopic of John Lennon’s early life. If there were any doubts about his acting, this film should put those to bed.

I really do insist that people watch Nowhere Boy.

I must admit, I can't keep up with who's been cancelled and who hasn't been nowadays. Isn't Tim Burton on this week's cancelled list for some perceived offense?

On a seperate issue, and after reading the Craig piece I posted above, I'm kinda leaning heavily towards the Sun newspaper having embellished the story about a screen-test, when Eon have only told Aaron Taylor-Johnson that he's in serious contention for the role. That doesn't mean a screen-test won't be forthcoming, it's just it hasn't quite happened yet. Basically, Eon might be sold on him, but they've yet to convince Amazon's MGM that he's the one.

I'm not going to delve too deeply into Aaron Taylor-Johnson's back catalogue of movies as he's still quite young, and it's difficult to gauge how he'll look in a few years from now. But at only 32, he's at a very good age to pick up the reins and be Bond for the next 20 years. And those GQ photos that @Univex posted show that he can cut a fine figure.

It's a good way of telling how good he is.
Was this coming from The Sun? I did see them saying that Phoebe Waller-Bridge is being wooed to write the new series of Doctor Who (after 'reinventing' James Bond). They're not very reliable.
  • There are moments where he speaks in a lower pitch, so I am sure he will do just fine.

Do you have any examples? I've only ever heard the high pitched voice.

@mtm it was The Sun that originally “broke” the “story”.

Thanks for that. Yeah; I saw a Twitter post just the other day compiling their various other Dr Who 'scoops' from the last couple of years in the light of the Waller-Bridge one... not exactly a sparkling track history! :D
They are a massive paper and it's not hard to believe they'd have some access someone in the know, but I think their unreliability and track record of being way off the mark, together with the points you make about screentests being unlikely before a script or director, all make this a little hard to buy.
I don't doubt that Eon will look at ATJ pretty closely though: he has experience and obviously looks the part. I'm not sure he's our guy though.

@peter Do you think that screentest will commence following the hiring of a director so that he or she could be part of the process?

I joined when SF was gearing up to shoot and even that feels like a lifetime ago.

I would've been a real loner around these parts if I had joined the last time we had this discussion, as I would've been a young, heartbroken soul that was lamenting the loss of Brosnan as Bond. If only I knew just how much Craig would manage to knock it out of the park.

I was furious and heartbroken when Nelson didnt stay on for DN. Remember that ConneryIsNotBond pamphlet? That was me. It still hurts.

Pfft. So you're a newcomer eh? I'm still smarting from losing Bob Holness.

@talos7 — I’d assume so. It’ll be the director that will be such an important component with the new Bond; they will be in lock-step to make sure they, and the new era, explodes out of the gate.

There’s a lot riding on this film (as there always is when a new actor takes over the role); I’m watching NTTD at the moment, and I think it would have been better for the next actor if Craig’s last film bombed and he failed to show up. However, no matter what one feels about him, Craig did the opposite— he’s left huge shoes to fill.

@mtm I’m sure that ATJ will also get an audition. And who knows, like I mentioned before, he may’ve had a dinner with BB, or a meeting of some kind. I just placed heavy doubts on an official audition.

Yes indeed, as I say: I saw him with my own eyes at the official 60th anniversary concert - there's something there.
He was wearing a silk camp collar shirt incidentally: he wisely didn't come in black tie :D

I wouldn’t want ATJ for Bond at all. He doesn’t interest me in the slightest. I’ve never seen anything in which he impressed me and I just don’t think he looks interesting or particularly attractive..

I'm with you. I can sort of see why people like him, but definitely not for me. Whenever I see a suggestion I don't like, I think, "what would I actually think if they actually cast him as the next Bond?" and I think for ATJ, he could at the very least bring something mildly interesting to the role as a non-obvious choice.
