Who should/could be a Bond actor?

  • How many actors are generally screen tested for the role when it is available? From what I can glean they did screen tests when Roger Moore had finished his initial contract and he was coming back on a film by film basis- the James Brolin period.

And then there were screen tests when Craig was chosen when Cavill was in the mix. Not too sure about the Dalton/Brosnan 80s period.

Wouldn’t want Boyega for Bond at all.

I myself think he would be excellent in the role.

What has he proven so far, acting wise, he'd be 'excellent' for the role? Based on what? He doesn't look the part, is a very mediocre actor, if not poor. What makes Boyega Bond? Quite keen to read.

He is by far the most traditionally handsome candidate under 40. He is by far a better actor than your favourite. He is proven in action blockbusters (with appropriately dramatic reactions). He is never stiff nor stilted. His gaze has the right mix of playful and dangerous. He could pull off cartoony without making the film too cartoony or realistic without making it uninteresting.

Mate I agree but you’re banging your head against a brick wall here and it’s not worth it. We all know exactly what he’s going to say as soon as his name pops up, and he’s never going to change his mind or accept any opinions he disagrees with as valid. Just ignore him.

IMO the most defining quality of cinematic Bond is being cool and the actor has to be able do act it without any visible effort. It is way more important than complexion, as proven by Craig.

Yeah I think conveying total self-confidence is possibly the main thing he needs to act. But there’s lots: comedy, drama, being a movie star level leading man, being an alpha male, having a bit of sexiness… it’s a fair bit to hit.

He is by far what? Stating it as fact? Hilarious. He looks average and gives me thugish vibes, not handsome in the slightest. And, again, judging from his acting 'skills' he is quite poor.

    Nonsense of course.

For Casino Royale they screentested 8 to 10 actors. Some say it was 8, but at the time they said it was whittled down from 10

There were old rumours that Adrian Paul had screentested twice (Brosnan and Craig), but he recently said that he only had 'a meeting' with Barbara Broccoli and 'it didn't go very well', because he said he only liked the Connery films!

Not to add fuel to the fire but Boyega is only 5' 9". I thought height was a big thing here?

Yeah I don’t think he was strongly considered. He wasn’t in the list that leaked of people who supposedly tested in 05.

So other than Craig and Cavill, who else actually screentested ?

I’m not sure, I think it’s out there somewhere. People like Karl Urban, Sam Worthington and Anthony Starr were on the shortlist, but I’m not sure who actually tested.

It came down to Craig, Cavill, and Visnjic.
I believe Martin Campbell wanted Visnjic!

Oo i didn’t know so many tested. Would love to see some footage from them but I doubt we ever will.

My “Holy Grail” of Bond is to see all of the screentest done over the years.

An actor who I know @talos7 has championed before is Harry Styles.
I'm seeing more of his work as an actor and whilst I believe he's got work to do, I don't feel that such a suggestion is such a long shot anymore. He's proving himself as a competent actor, and would quite possibly play a very credible Bond.

Yes it seems unlikely; I guess actors don't particularly want people to see them in jobs they failed to get, and even ones of those of people who did get it like Dalton's, Brosnan's or Craig's we haven't seen more than photos of, maybe because their performances were a little more embryonic? There was suggestion we'd see Craig's in the recent documentary, but it only was only BTS stuff.
It make me wonder how the clips which were released of James Brolin's and Sam Neill's tests, plus those of some of the OHMSS guys, came to be released. Maybe they didn't mind! You'd imagine they'd have been paid..?

I know that Julian McMahon was considered, did he actually screentest? I actually think that he could have done a good job, he has the charm with an undercurrent of danger.

I would've loved McMahon as Bond, he's incredibly charming. I was a big fan of Nip/Tuck when it was on, as soap opera-y as it gets, and was always upset he didn't have a bigger career afterward.

I don't think so (someone corrects me if I'm wrong.) What McMahon did however is push his name a lot and stare his interest very publicly.

No one would take the "guy" seriously. This is how he looks in his spare time. His nan wants her wardrobe back:

This is the old article from 2005 on CBN, and they did seem to have some sort of source to the production into who was considered.

    https://commanderbond.net/2995/the-men-who-could-have-been-bond.html

    Gerard Butler
    Henry Cavill
    Rupert Friend
    Daniel Goddard
    Martin Henderson
    Julian McMahon
    David Morrissey
    Alex O’Lachlan
    Ingo Rademacher
    Dougray Scott
    Christian Solimeno
    Antony Starr
    Karl Urban
    Goran Visnjic
    Dominic West
    Sam Worthington

They knew that Cavill, Craig and Worthington may have been in the final three, and that O’Lachlan says he tested in costume, so there may have been more.

More importantly, it seems like his performance has been largely criticised in Don't Worry Darling. I don't think we'd do too well with a Bond who is potentially overshadowed by his female co-star in terms of acting ability.
  • I don’t care what the next Bond wears off screen because it’s not real but yeah, he hasn’t been getting great reviews for his new film. I thought he was fine in Dunkirk and I was open to being surprised by him as Bond if he’d kept improving from there, but it seems like putting him in a lead role might have exposed his limits as an actor. And Bond needs a proper leading man.

Judging by that recent clip of Styles playing an American where he went from a Cockney to an American to an Australian accent in the space of three lines, there'd be no Craig-style revelation to silence the critics either.

Although for my money, Florence Pugh is one of the best performers around at the moment. I think she's brilliant.

    Just stop your crying
It's a sign of the times
    Welcome to the final show
Hope you're wearing your best clothes
You can't bribe the door on your way to the sky
You look pretty good down here
    But you ain't really good

He'd already sang it by himself, especially the last line.
