    I've seen people use the term here of course but 2015 is a fair while ago now so thought someone would've come up with it before now!

    Get the popcorn, here it comes: the 893 (yattsu, ku, san in Japanese) is the worst combination you can get in Oicho-kabu, which is interestingly a card game very similar to the baccarat game Bond plays. It is the origin of the word yakuza and literally referred to "those who bet and lose". I like to think that those who bet, because they have the courage to do so, never lose and thinking about it has given me a lot of luck in some things.

    @Brofeld Hola!

    I suggested Brofeld as a legit entry into the glossary of terms on another Bond forum, but it was ignored. I later did a search for Brofeld on said forum, and was surprised to receive a zero match result. I find that interesting as it's used here often.

    That was one of the wittier things he came up with then. He's been gone four years. I wonder what became of him?

    It always interests me how there are Bond forums and Bond fan clubs snd societies all over the world that we in the English speaking world know little to nothing about. It's great to see and just goes to show the truly global reach and appeal of the James Bond character.

    That's right. Here's a pic of a Bond fan society, a very exclusive one. It is said that if a member spoils the upcoming Bond films or books, drastic actions are taken against them.

    If you want I can share the data from the survey that I am doing in the community. Right now, I have a few responses, far from how many I need, but they are interesting.

    This is awesome. Thanks for sharing. And welcome!

    EDIT: I'm still thinking about this Oicho-kabu thing, and how James Bond it is that the word Yakuza comes from a hand of this card game and means "those who bet and lose"... maybe it's time for another Bond adventure in Japan, against a particularly depraved Yakuza assassin... the title could be some variation of "those who bet and lose"... feels like rich stuff to mine from!

    Actually, Bond was about to get another film in Japan involving the Yakuza in it. It was written between in 1993 for Dalton but sadly the project was cancelled.

    Hi everyone, I'm Sean from Scotland (Yes, really). I have been on the outside looking in for quite some time and decided to bite the bullet and join.

    Not that I haven't wanted to. But seeing a lot of your posts you are such an eloquent bunch. With some fantastic insights and comments. I thought I would have nothing to add and stick out like a sore thumb. Apologies up front then, if my posts are not up to the usual high standard.

    I'll tell you a little bit about myself. I've been a James Bond fan for 34 years. I was named after Sean Connery. Absolutely true. My surname also begins with a C. And Sean is my favourite Bond. My first memory of Bond was when I was 5. I am from a single parent family. And visits from my Dad were sporadic and unorthodox. He came to see me one evening after work, after 10pm. He woke me up out of bed and he had a James Bond VHS that he bought from Tower Records. "From Russia With Love" he put it on for me to watch and I got to stay off from school the next day. The Gun Barrel. Wow! Then the first sight of Sean as Bond going up against the bad guy (Red Grant) in the PTS. He looked so cool. Dressed in his tuxedo. Who is this guy? Can I ever be this cool. A broken twig, suspense. Barry's score starts. Sean looking over his shoulder worried. He fires his Walther PPK. (I didn't know it was the gun barrel. I didn't know it was the PTS. I didn't know he was called Grant. I didn't know it was Barry. All that came later.) The bad guy pulls wire from his watch. Wait a minute. It can't be can it? Our hero on the cover of the VHS. Looking so cool with his gun. He can't be killed in the opening moments of the movie. Can he??!! Lights come on. Exactly 1 minute 52 seconds. And then they remove they remove the Bond mask. Barry's theme starts. Dancing ladies. Harry Saltzman and Albert R. Broccoli present Ian Fleming's "From Russia With Love" and that's it. I'm hooked. My life changed from that moment onwards. I watched again the next day. I couldn't get enough. Secret tunnels underground. Ladies fighting to the death. Gun battles. An execution from the lips of Anita Eckberg, a fight on a train, a boat chase, a helicopter chase. It had everything. And Sean being absolutely cool throughout. What more can you ask for?

    I begged my Dad later to buy me Thunderball from Tower Records. It was the only one I could see with Sean on it. And then I endlessly rented Licence To Kill from the video store. With this new James Bond. Who is this guy. I never owned another official VHS. But I recorded all of the films off of ITV. To watch over and over again. Much to the annoyance of my Mum. She loved Sean. But didn't care for any of the other Bond's. It was only when I got my DVD player that I bought all the official Bond's on DVD. I now have all of them on Blu-Ray. As well as all the Fleming novels (including 4 of the lovely Folio Society editions), I have Colonel Sun, 4 Gardner novels and then everything from Sebastian Faulks through to the first Anthony Horowitz.

    Well I realise this might be quite a long introduction. But all I meant to say was "Hi" and I'm a huge Bond fan. I'm very happy to be here and hopefully I can contribute.
