Bond dodging the false floor in the elevator is also a nice touch!

This elevator is definitely part of one of my favourite moments (combined with a shark, a slide and Mozart).

    Round 1: TSWLM - Part 2: Ranking

It's time to start part two of the TSWLM moments:
Try to narrow down your favourite TSWLM moments to a top5 and rank them from first to fifth.

Here is a summary of (most of) your suggestions/ earlier comments, but feel free to add other (so far unmentioned) moments to your list:

    • PTS: “So does England”
    • PTS: ski jump
    • Bond in naval uniform
    • Atlantis rise above to the sound of Mozart
    • Jaws first appearance/first smile
    • Silhouette in Cairo (Rog standing parallel with the minaret combined with the music cue)
    • Fight with Sandor and/or Sandor’s death
    • Thy pyramids scene: Jaws face being lit up
    • Pyramids: painting of Roger hiding behind the rock
    • Murder of Fekkesh
    • Pyramids: Jaws vanishes
    • The bar scene in general and especially the moment where Bond doesn’t want to talk about his marriage
    • Murder of Kalba
    • Bond and Anya alone in the desert
    • Boat ride down the Nile
    • Jaws hiding in the wardrobe
    • The whole Lotus road chase or also the whole Lotus action from start to beach
    • Music kicks in during the Lotus chase
    • Jump of the Lotus into the water
    • Lotus’ transformation (can be combined with jump)
    • Bond telling Anya that he killed her lover
    • Bond starts the revolt aboard the Liparus
    • Bond has the idea to aim the submarines’ bombs at each other
    • Bond dodging the false floor in the elevator
    • Keeping the British end up

    And here is my ranking:

    1. PTS Ski jump (the location, the silence, the ski touching the parachute...)
    2. Traitor, slide, shark, Mozart, Stromberg's dining room...(a feast for my eyes and ears)
    3. Lotus road chase (the underwater part is also great but I enjoy the first part more)
    4. Silhouette in Cairo (perfect combination of picture and sound)
    5. "Such lovely lines"

Is it wrong to have chosen more scenes with Naomi than Jaws?

    1. PTS Ski Jump - Best. Stunt. Ever.

    2. "Did you kill him?" - Anya discovers who killed her lover.

    3. An Egyptian horror show - Jaws shows us just how terrifying an adversary he is.

    4. The mission is over Commander - the consequences of Bond's actions nearly come back to haunt him....before he suceeds in getting his British end up.

    5. Lotus/Wet Nellie - as varied and exhIilarating a sequence that has ever graced the series.

Good list @WillyGalore. I thought about listing the pyramids or the final scene as #5. So many great moments to choose from.

I'm always in the mood for TSWLM so I thought I'd give it another watch tonight before posting my top 5. Very difficult choice as the film is chock full of so many of my favourite Bond moments, but my choices in the end have to be influenced by my memories and love of watching this film as a kid. Here goes ...

    1. The Lotus car chase from start to fishy finish This was simply jaw-dropping as a kid, I'd never seen a car like it, and it's still my favourite Bond car. I can't choose between the land chase and the underwater scenes, just count me in for the entire sequence

    2. The ski jump Best Bond stunt. Fin.

    3. Jaws face lit up at Pyramids I love the entire pyramids sequence, but again the little kid in me is both terrified, fascinated and excited by the eerily lit appearance of Jaws here. Shivers!!

    4. Bond plants the detonator and gets stuck on the CCTV pod Such an exciting sequence, with the Bond theme kicking in and cheekily cut short as the cameras are disconnected, then the tension ramps up with Bond stuck on the pod and seconds to spare .... oh my, I need to lie down ...

    5. "But James, I need you" ... "So does England" A tiny moment but this sums up everything that Roger and Bond mean to me - no matter what the attraction, be it cars, women or booze, when it comes down to it duty, Queen and country always come first. Thank you Sir Rog for keeping me safe all these years! :)

@Max_The_Parrot There are so many great moments in the film that I found it really difficulty narrowing down the final five. I could have done a top 20 and still would have left out some of my fave scenes.

Great to read about your #4 @Max_The_Parrot. Another moment I really like. It is smart how the Bond theme stops when the camera is disconnected. My favourite moment of the Liparus part.

Even the part when he's removing the detonator from the warhead is tense as hell.

We had many interesting comments about some of your favourite TSWLM moments but only three rankings so far.

Anyone else interested in posting his top five ranking?

Is it boring to have another “ranking thread“? If so, we could think of a way to improve the thread or simply bury it.

I think it's more so a case of it being so difficult to choose a mere five moments from such an epic film. Therefore, I shall include favourite moments from each section of the film:

    1. Bond skiing through the ice tunnel
    2. Everyone following Fekkesh at Giza
    3. train fight
    4. Lotus/helicopter chase
    5. Bond searches for Anya on Atlantis

I like your list @QBranch. Train fights are always a good thing in Bond films and the ice tunnel looks awesome. It's a great ski scene even without the jump. The location, the stunts and the deadly gadget.

And I like it that there is support for the silhouette in Cairo.

It's definitely tricky to narrow it down to five moments. I try to do it the easy way: when I think about the movie, which moments are the ones I'm looking forward to the most when I would start the film right now? Which action scene stands out and which smaller moment puts the brightest smile on ny face of gives me goosbumps because of the music etc...
I try not to think about it too hard and do it more spontaneously.

I'm glad these two great moments were brought up as well. I like the music in both of them. The minimalistic piece heard when Bond is removing the detonator perfectly compliments the onscreen action. And what a sick rendition of the Bond theme is used in the following scene! The tremoling strings make it especially exciting (this piece was also used to great effect in a teaser trailer for the film). Then, it stops playing and we just hear the ticking bomb. Great use of music and sound.

I'm kind of over ranking things at the moment, I prefer just celebrating and enjoying them for what they're worth, so I don't see myself contributing much to this part, but I enjoy the spirit of the thread and can see myself participating in it. Just my preference, and others seem to like ranking the moments, so don't mind me!

Hard to rank them but I will try. TSWLM is my favourite Bond film, so there is an absolute ton of moments I enjoy.

    1. The Union Jack Parachute
    2. The Lotus and the chopper (particular mention to the wink/nod with Naomi).
    3. Slapping Sandor's hand away from Bond's tie. "What a helpful chap".
    4. The first reveal of Atlantis, with Mozart in the background.
    5. This may be an odd one, but the moment on the train when Bond an Anya are in their respective rooms waiting for each other. When it appears Anya isn't coming, for a moment, Bond appears terribly lonely. I'm not sure if this was by design, or my own brain inventing it, but there we go.

@Roadphill Interesting thoughts for your number 5. Never looked at it that way but I like the moment because both want each other and hipe the other one will open the door. It's fun and this way the shock with Jaws hiding is even stronger.

@mattjoes Thanks for your opinion and I hope to read more of your thoughts about other films.

I wait another day and we can start the next film soon.

The Alpine chase with the famous ski jump wins! But only by a hair! The lotus action scene is full of memorable and awesome moments (the road action seems to be more loved than the underwater part). The third scene which was mentioned a lot is the pyramid scene.

    1. Ski jump (and alpine chase)
    2. Lotus action
    3. (Jaws at the) Pyramids

Let's discuss your favourite moments of another Bond movie.

    Thunderball
Round 2: TB - Part 1: Suggestions and discussion

A lot of underwater scenes, a lot of stunning women and much more. What are your TB highlights? Let's celebrate the best moments of the 4th installment and the last movie directed by Terence Young.

The one that comes to mind at the moment is the death of Quist, with that brilliant shot of the water turning red. This sinister scene ups the ante from a dramatic point of view, as seeing Largo's cruelty toward his own people creates more anticipation (and even some tension) for the confrontation between Bond and him that one knows will happen down the line. I also love the touch of Largo kissing his ring, something the film wisely provides no explanation for, but which can be speculated to mean that Largo's association with SPECTRE isn't about mere pragmatic convenience, but about a profound sense of loyalty, and even some kind of twisted ethical code.

@mattjoes That's such a great scene, and I love how Quist runs the back of his hand along his jawline.

    You saw Bond?
    Yes, I saw him.
    What happened?
    *rubs jaw*

Then Largo backhands him with a towel :))

I'm posting this in the 'extras caught looking at the camera' thread, but just rewatching the Quist scene, I noticed this:

When Quist is thrown into the shark pool, Largo walks towards the camera while kissing his SPECTRE ring. I believe he's looking at the camera directly after (and possibly also during) the kiss, as if he was threatening the audience. By the time his hand is down, he has subtly looked away, to the right of the screen as he walks out of frame.

Favourite section of the film might have to be when Bond is snooping around Palmyra at night.
Tripping the guard, his PPK falling off the roof, and having the other guards shooting at each other. Generally, I find all the night action to be the best, as it's easier for Bond to go stealth. It elevates the suspense.

Bond dancing with Domino is a highlight too. We should see more of that in the films.

Confronting Fiona "you don't think it gave me any pleasure..."... Also punching out "the widow"...
Love the lunch Bond enjoys with Domino....

Quist's fate is a very memorable moment that I've never forgotten after my first watch. Sharks always fascinated me and I'm a fan of every single shark moment of the series (apart from the fact that they killed sharks for real!). The underwater shot up to the villains when the water starts to turn red is great, indeed. (I read somewhere that the red colour was added in post-production?)

Isn't the moment with Fiona in the bathtub a highlight of the highlights? Visually top (a feast for my eyes)...and Bond's reaction is priceless. I'm not sure if I can find a better moment in this movie.

@Thunderfinger this is your favourite location of the movie? Have you been there?

@peter it's a pleasure to meet you again. Punch the “widow“ must have been amusing and shocking the first time poeple have seen it. And the fight that follows is very good in my opinion. I'm always looking forward to it when I start my DVD. (Yes, I still watch my DVDs, maybe I will upgrade after the NTTD release in 2022)

I haven t been there, but that whole scene is so great. The location, the cinematography and the score come together to create a very atmosheric sequence.

Another great scene is the SPECTRE meeting at the beginning.

Another great scene is the SPECTRE meeting at the beginning.

That meeting is superb, one of my favourite ‘big meeting’ scenes in any film.

Other personal favourites include the PTS (until the jet pack appears), the Vulcan heist and when it’s slowly sinking into the water, the verbal sparring between Largo and Bond (“I know a little about women”) and the Disco Volante splitting in half like a two-stage rocket. I know that some other people have issues with these scenes but I really enjoy them.

And TB has some nice touches, like Sean setting off the fire alarm at Shrublands with a casual knock of his elbow.

For many years I thought Bond only requested to go to Nassau because he saw the photo of Domino, and that it was just a bit of luck that the bombs were there. But watching it recently I now think Bond was cleverer than I gave him credit, and that he had already worked out that the bombs were in the Caribbean when he was still sitting at the OO agents’ meeting.

If you look at the big map at the meeting of the Vulcan’s range, and if you then correlate that with Spectre’s threat to blow up a major US or UK city, and if you bear in mind too that there’s only a finite number of places where you can actually hide a Vulcan, then Bond had probably narrowed the likely options down to the Caribbean while the meeting was still going on. Then he sees the photo of Domino at Nassau, and that confirms it for him.

Yes, and the gathering of the 00 agents is another cool moment.

As is the conversation between Domino and Largo while they are shooting clay pigeons.

By coincidence TB is next on my Bondathon that I'm currently doing, so I'll add my suggestions after a refresh.
    However from memory some moments I enjoy;
    - pre credits fight, quite brutal.
    - The casino scene. I love the poking the hornet's nest that Bond does here.
    - "I think he got the Point"
    - The clay pigeon shoot, brilliantly cool. (The re-jig of it in Moonraker is also one of my favourite moments in that film)
    - The quintessential Spectre boardroom scene and set design.
    - The scope of the shot of every 00 in Europe sat together.
    - Every moment with Fiona!!!

You mean the clay pigeon shooting with Bond (or the one with Fiona)?

Interesting thoughts about Bond's wish request to go to Nassau @IGotABrudder.
