@Creasy47, I'm fine with a quiet year. Everything up to now for the past few years has been a headache for me, the constant promotional advertising, the toxic hype, etc. But we've still got a Star Wars film coming, so I've got to hear about that goddamn franchise for even longer. Wheeeee...

I consider SW to be fantasy instead of sci-fi. Perhaps that first film had the most sci-fi elements, but since Empire, it's (dark) fantasy for sure. The mythology is expanded fast with this movie to where the sum total of the hero's journey and dark mythology elements combine to form much more of a fantasy tale than a sci-fi one in my opinion.

    Top 10 (7) of 2017:

    1: Blade Runner 2049
    2: Logan
    3: Dunkirk
    4: John Wick: Chapter 2
5: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
    5: Wonder Woman
    6: Moonlight
    7: Spiderman Homecoming

Despite 2-3 standouts, I would call 2017 a disappointing year for film. I regret not having seen several acclaimed, smaller scale films (Mother!, Get Out, etc).

My top film of 2018 was Isle of Dogs by a very long way:

I saw a lot of new releases in the cinema by my standards; usually I only catch one or two at most. Here's the rest, in rough order of enjoyment:

    Tomb Raider
    Johnny English 3
    Incredibles 2
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

Top new-to-me film was probably Hell Drivers, watched on Talking Pictures TV and featuring a young Sean Connery, Patrick McGoohan and David McCallum.

I´m afraid I´m not very satisfied with 2018 as a movie year.

    Ready Player One
    Sicario 2
Into the Spiderverse (excellent! Movie of the year!)

If tv productions Count, I really enjoyed Bodyguard.

I´m not sure what´s coming in 2019. Looking Forward to:

    Glass
    Knives out

    With slightly mixed Feelings:
Once upon a time in Hollywood
    The Irishman
    Avengers Endgame

On the positive side, I´m experiencing a Phase where I thorroughly enjoy re-watching not so new films, and reading James Bond novels ;-).

Hell Drivers is a great movie. You forgot to mention the lead, Stanley Baker and it's directed by Cy Enfield of 'Zulu' fame! Have it on dvd, terrific film!

    Interesting question.

Probably the original King Kong as i grew up loving Dinosaurs, Gorillas, Monsters and horror films. The whole plot of travelling to a mysterious unknown Island appealed to me greatly.

Interesting Question. I can hardly think of any. Bad Boys 2. I had seen part of Bad Boys before once and wasn´t excited. After re-discovering BB2 a few months ago I also got curious and gave the first one another try. And learned to appreciate it for what it is.

Not so much "sequel", but after Man of Steel, Superman Returns became a masterpiece. On the subject of sequels, Batman V Superman made me love Man of Steel.

If that is what is meant, ALIENS was utter tripe and made ALIEN look even better.

I figure it meant in any context, I just used movies I didn't like that made me re-evaluate the original.

In that context, any Disney feature film sequel. They are all sacrilege, except maybe THE RETURN OF JAFAR, which was almost as good as ALADDIN. The third was garbage, though.

To clarify, what I meant was this: sometimes, a sequel seems to largely improve things and make its predecessor more relevant or more understandable or something like that.

I liked X-Men the first time I saw it but wasn't completely sold on it. X2 changed all that: it increased my love for the characters and their conflicts ten-fold. Going back to X-Men, I suddenly found myself really loving it big time because of the "help" I got from its sequel.

Same thing with The Mummy Returns, G.I. Joe Retaliation, The Crimes Of Grindelwald, Ghost In The Shell: Innocense, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes and, at the age of 14, Aliens. (Concerning the latter: it took me a few more years to realise the utter brilliance of that first film!)

Difficult but interesting question! I'm struggling to think of many examples at all – if not counting Bond (DN and FRWL). A strange one maybe, but I probably prefer Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment and Police Academy 3: Back in Training to Police Academy. Not that I can put my finger on why necessarily.

Police Academy 3 is actually one of the films I've watched the most outside the Bond films. It was a favourite of mine when I was younger.

I'm the opposite, but also bias. I think Aladdin and the King of the Thieves could have been put in theaters. Just up the budget just a bit.

Yes, of course we can. I must, however, point out that a decade runs from year 1 to year 10. ;-) So, in essence, the past "decade", the "tens" as it were, isn't over until a year from now. :D
