Having seen most of the films now, The Big Short gets my vote. Not only is it very good, it's very important for people to see it. Spotlight is a close 2nd. I loved Mad Max but no, it's not the best film of the year.

    MAD MAX FURY ROAD

Seeing this movie in a Dolby Atmos theatre was better than Sex. Way better.
And I really, really, really LOVE Sex.

    :))
  • Only watched Fury road from the contenders, will try to watch The Martian next week.

Just came back from my second viewing of The Big Short. I enjoyed it even more, found it even smarter and funnier this time - basically loved it, so much great stuff there, oh my goodness. And it's not like this was a simple thing to make into a movie. As much as I loved the book, I couldn't see at all how it could successfully be made into a movie, but wow. I can now definitely say I'd vote for it.

Mad Max: Fury Road is another fascinating movie, beautifully done and unusual. I'd be thrilled to bits for either Miller or McKay getting BD - both did something unusual and amazing and not simple. And, of course, AGI just won last year, anyway. Also, I think both McKay and Miller made better movies this year than AGI - who, however, won DGA, so the chances are that he'll take the Oscar, too. I'm kinda resigned to that *sigh* but hoping for a nice surprise. I'd give MMFR most techs, and happily so. Cinematography I'm not sure, but possibly. (Well, Lubezki won the last two years already ... but, but... I certainly can't complain if he does again, I love his work.) Visual effects probably. Production design, Make-up, sound categories perhaps (I would need to re-watch and consider to actually decide on sound). - I would have nominated the score, too, but AMPAS did not, meh, so I'd definitely vote for Sicario on that.

The Revenant is visually beautiful, but that's Lubezki for you. He's the movie's main star and asset for me. AGI might very well get his fourth Oscar (2nd for directing), though I wish he didn't. (I like him and I like his movies, but really? Is there anyone else whose every single movie gets major nominations?) I sure hope he won't get 5th, too - in other words as producer again this year. I know the movie is divisive - and I hope it's divisive enough. I liked it a lot, but mostly for cinematography and score, and some acting and impressive CGI. On the whole it isn't something that I feel would deserve to make as much history as it would make if it won BP. Even consecutive BD would be first time since, what was it, 1950? The story is not only simple, but ultimately kinda... empty. There is very little substance. Not a movie I can imagine sitting through several times. I've been considering a second visit to that world since I saw it the first time a month a go, but somehow haven't quite gotten around to doing so. (I didn't need to coax myself at all with TBS or MMFR.) - And btw, I thought Birdman was a better movie (I had no issues with that winning BD), and its lead was more deserving of an Oscar than this one, too, but... (I haven't seen The Theory Of Everything, though, so I'm not comparing Keaton and Redmayne.)

There is one person I really, really want to see win an Oscar this year. Really, really, really. He is nominated in two categories, and in the other he isn't the front runner (AGI is). In the other he sure is (with his collaborator), and if they won't get it, I'll be seriously pissed off. So there's one category I've never cared that much about before, and now I'm like [-O< Adapted Screenplay.

Editing is another such category - not as much, but still. If Sixel wins, cool, if Corwin does, brilliant. If anyone else (surprisingly) does... I.. won't be using nice language.

I'll see Room tomorrow. That's 7th of the 8 BD nominees for me. (I wanted to see Brooklyn, too, but it didn't come here, so... I read the book a couple of years ago, but that doesn't help having any opinion on the movie.)

I've watched the Oscars, and at the very least paid some attention to them, for ages. This time I have more of a clue about it all, for the first time I've actually properly followed the other awards, I know something about stats and what correlates with what. Now I even know that Picture is (nowadays) voted for in a different way than the other categories, and how that works. I know, for instance, which Supporting Actor nominees have been campaigning their asses off (Stallone and Ruffalo), and which have not (the other 3). DiCaprio and Larson have been campaigning tons, and are, in fact, the expected winners in their categories. Hmm. How much heavy campaigning effects the voters I don't now. I find that part of the process sort of tasteless and tacky, and I'm pleased that some actors do as well.

I don't know if I ever want to pay this much attention again. It takes lots of time and energy and I wouldn't necessarily want to care this much. (Then again, there are rarely movies about something genuinely important nominated, either.)

3 more sleeps, then the night of no sleep, and then I can get back to my regular (but ever worsening) movie fandom. :)

</b>How do you feel about a soundtrack album that doesn't have the film's score?</font>

I wouldn't say I don't like them, but I prefer the soundtrack be the complete Film Score over music that 9 times out of 10 isn't even heard in the movie the soundtrack is from.

As a kid, I learned about the difference between a soundtrack album and a score the hard way. Stores sold me the soundtrack albums to such movies as The Saint, The Avengers, Speed, Godzilla and The Specialist while I had specifically requested the scores. Most of these soundtracks contain - at best - two songs worthy of my time. (Granted, The Saint had a pretty cool soundtrack overall.) Waste of money or long time investment? I don't know. In any case, these are not where my heart lies.

I want scores, and luckily, throughout the years, I got my hands on the scores I mentioned above. They are the ones I prefer. The more original material they contain, the happier I am.

I usually avoid soundtrack albums with "songs from the movie" or "songs inspired by the movie" since quite often - though not always - most of them are rubbish anyway. I honestly don't understand why producers are sometimes so much more difficult about producing score CD's rather than soundtrack albums... Obviously the former is what the fans prefer.

The Pulp Fiction soundtrack was very popular. Seems like almost everyone had that one.

I was very angry when I bought the CR soundtrack at the time of release and it didn't have 'You Know My Name' on it.

@Thunderfinger, good point! The Tarantino soundtracks are among the more interesting I think, and that's mostly because Tarantino actually does something with the songs to the point where previously "meaningless" songs suddenly carry a lot of cinematic weight. Songs like "Son of a Preacher Man" (Pulp Fiction) and "Across 110th Street" (Jackie Brown) had always been just songs to me, until Tarantino gave them that special spot in his movies, and it all clicked.

@DaltonCraig007, I agree. It happened with the later ones too, except for QOS. I cannot understand why. Sure, EON talks to artists and artists do what artists do but they can't even secure the rights to a song composed especially for their own movie?

At least they don't litter the soundtrack CD with a CD-rom section anymore... (TWINE and DAD, anyone?)

@Thunderfinger, you like that soundtrack because of the music "as is" or because of the link to the movie?

I remember getting the soundtrack for Christine (1983) and it was mainly all 50's songs played on the cars radio in the film. There was one measly John Carpenter track called 'Christine Attacks'

I think it was about 7 years later the full John Carpenter score was released!

When we're talking Bond, Licence to Kill's soundtrack is a disgrace. So many cues missing from the album that were prominently featured in the film.

The Spy Who Loved Me also misses a large chunk of the score.

Those two are begging for a proper release.

And don't get me startedon the Dr. No soundtrack : apart from the Bond Theme and "The Island Speaks", not a single note from the actual score was heard in that album. Why, I still don't know.

This collection has the Dr No suite on it. It's not the original music but it's damn close.

It even has the alternate Tank Chase music from GE as used in the film.

I know about it. In fact, when I decided to do my own DN soundtrack, I put the suite on the CD. Same with "Arrival at Chateau Drax/Freefall". It's not the same as having the real tracks, but it does the trick... Until they decide to do a real CD.

That suite from DN and the Tank Chase music are both pretty good! I know it's not the original stuff but it is, indeed, darn close.

If we´re talking about "inspired by" albums that contain mainly pop songs, like for example Transformers, I don´t want to waste my time with them.

TSHLM or GE on the other hand are CDs that I very much enjoy.

    Let's see:
    - Marvel: Deadpool, X-Men, Civil War, Doctor Strange
    - DC: BvS, SS

I was least enthralled and in fact most disappointed by X-Men this year. Being a huge X-Men fan, I felt the latest film let me down. Especially after the previous two instalments, which are excellent in my humble opinion, Apocalypse came off as one of the weakest X-Men films ever made.

The big highlight was Civil War, no doubt about that. Deadpool was fun but I didn't fully go with the hype. Doctor Strange was very nice too.

I for one enjoyed BvS, though I acknowledge the film's flaws. SS was just "meh".

Marvel provided the highest high and deepest low, but still scores better if I rank them all:

    1) Civil War
    2) Doctor Strange
    3) Batman v Superman
    4) Deadpool
    5) Suicide Squad
    6) X-Men Apocalypse

    Marvel wins.

Marvel's TV output has outperformed their film releases in my opinion over the last year or so. Daredevil Season 2 was excellent even though Luke Cage ran out of steam before its finale. I didn't enjoy Doctor Strange that much though, even though Civil War was quite good.

But I'll always prefer DC and its characters. It's just more my thing!
