That scene of Kirk and Scotty just observing the ship never would be shot in a movie for today. We are all about quick cuts and fast pay-offs now. A shame because these type of scenes do help with the overall feel of a film and can help with pacing.

Scenes need to breath, 2001 A Space Odyssey is one of my favorite films of all time, I like movies that you not just watch but experience. Star Trek The Motion Picture and The Forbidden Planet fall into the same category as 2001 for me.

Reminds me of STD, I am not keen on that time line or how it was realised.

The Hogwarts of the Star Trek Universe! :D

I got those vibes, it will probably be the last show of this particular Star Trek era once Skydance take full control, thank god lol

I admire TMP in parts, but I don’t think trying to chase 2001 was ever the right approach. It lost too much of the warmth and humor of TOS.

I see TMP as a crew that was distanced/separated from one another (they went on there own personal journeys). By the end of the film they restore the bonds they had in TOS.

Funnily, Nimoy felt the ending didn’t go as far as he wanted in terms of restoring the bonds. Here’s the dialogue ultimately in the film.

SCOTT: I would say it's time for that, sir, aye. We can have you back on Vulcan in for days, Mister Spock.
SPOCK: Unnecessary, Mister Scott. My task on Vulcan is completed.

Nimoy suggested to add some humor to the moment reminiscent of TOS, that Spock should say instead “If Dr. McCoy is to stay here, then my presence here will be essential.”

When is this one set? It seems to have cameos and easter eggs from all Trek time periods in it (which in itself is a bit worrying for a two minute trailer).

I have watched that before great interview, I really do see the 4K remaster of Star Trek The Motion Picture Directors Edition to be the best version of the film now. I like the serious tone of the film I can see why they did not want any tonal shift to be too jarring, I think the end of the film as it is on the 4K remaster is perfect.

Shortly after Discovery I think? so way way in the future (900 years in the future from Kirk's time), having all the names of past characters etc is probably an attempt to get pre 2003 Trek fans interested.

The Doctor is probably an EMH, only watched the trailer once.

CBS/ Paramount has done a really terrible job with Star Trek, my goodness.

That seems kind of flimsy, given that the subset of aging fans that hate everything after 2003 is very small. They’re likely just Easter eggs.

As for The Doctor, he’s either the EMH from Voyager, the backup from “Living Witness”, or an entirely different EMH altogether.

I only saw a bit of Discovery after the time jump as it left Netflix, but I thought the 900 years thing was a bit hard to swallow as not enough really changed in that time. Starfleet is still around and their ships more or less look the same? Kirk to them is like King Alfred is to us.

Because there was a century or two worth of stagnation that cut off vast systems from each other after a cataclysmic event. The academy in this new show is basically about the grand re-opening of the academy, presumably after Earth’s re-entry into the Federation.
