The name's 25. Bond 25, or rather, it's NTTD.

Well Bond has enlarged your vocabulary.

I remember that when QoS came out I read that "solace" is used much more frequently in Canada and the UK than it is in the States. Speaking to casual movie-goers (at least here in Canada) that word didn't confuse them. What did was the word "quantum" - most people think that it means "a huge amount" instead of "the smallest possible measure". I blame the phrase "quantum leap"...

Even Fleming's own definition in the short story was off - what "quantum of solace" really means is simply "the smallest possible measure of comfort". I'm not quite sure how he decided that it could be used as "the measure of respect or consideration for another person"!

I absolutely agree. I think QoS is a perfectly fitting title for the movie. I think that if the title confused you, that speaks more about you than it does the title itself.

Property of a Lady is cool and a good title; would need a villainess to make it complete I think. I still like "provocateur" because I love the way Craig said it and it goes right along with being an agent ... yet it may be too much like the word "quantum" - meaning too unclear, to be good in a title.

I think it should refer to the Queen, not a villainess.
  • I actually like the title of Quantum of Solace. It fits perfectly in the pantheon of weird, cool sounding titles.

    Considering you're trolling,

    Distance To Death isn't bad.

As long as we don't have the words gold/golden, kill, and die in the title I'll be happy.
I would like, however, Property of a Lady. I feel that SkyFall could have been called that but I like the SF name as well.

Tarantino would be proud. If he would have done CR all those years back, maybe this would have been his title! :))

    some sound very cliched...

Embassy Lockdown Wouldn't work for a Bond film
Illegal Methods Great chapter title in a book, but stupid sounding for a film title

High on Helium No. Just, no
    Over the Radar Doesn't work
The Human Sun The Human Sun. That's all I have to say.

Steal my Ego Clearly you've got a big one

Drinks on Me I'll take vodka
Terrorists Cry Too This would work as a romance novel involving Al Qaeda, but that's it
    Patience Required I'm losing mine
    Bullets for Breakfast Chapter title
    User Interface Nope
Less is More Less is Moore, get it right
Distance to Death Sounds cool, but somehow I don't think it'll work

    Deceit comes First Decent sounding

    Symbolic Symptoms Huh?

You know a film title is bad when your dad thinks "solace" refers to solar power...

QoS is a great title that actually refers to something very crucial in the film. If it isn't understood then one must simply have aforementioned knowledge of it or get a dictionary. I like titles that necessitate some eloquence in diction to understand.

I get the Quantum thing, but SOLACE, because if you take the title and define it, it actually means Quantum of Comfort in Sorrow. WTF? that's what Solace means roughly i think. But I do get how that could be with Bond mourning but it just makes no sense.

Alright, class. Let the lesson begin:

Quantum of Solace is our focus today.

Let us take apart each section of this term to define it:

    Quantum
singular is: quanta- The smallest amount of a physical quantity that can exist on its own. It can simply mean an amount of something.

    Solace-Comfort/Consolation in a time of great melancholia/tragedy/etc.

So, therefore...Quantum of Solace is the smallest amount of comfort in a time of pain, as described by Fleming and as felt by Bond in CR and QoS.

In effect, the title is fantastic and makes perfect sense! :)

Great explanation, better than my own a few posts above. One minor quibble - Fleming didn't use Quantum of Solace to describe "the smallest possible amount of consolation", he used it as "the amount of respect/consideration between two people". So even Fleming got it wrong! :-)

That is true. I think EON obviously took the name for Quantum from Fleming's story and ironically the description Fleming gives of it matches Bond's own struggles trying to get past Vesper's betrayal to find a satisfactory comfort in their relationship long after she has left him and this world. It also fits with my explanation as well, so all around you can look at the title and its meaning to the film in a great number of ways. Another reason why I find it so successful and provoking. And there really is no set definition, and very up to interpretation with exactly what the saying means.

    Thank You For Dying
    A Kiss For A Kill
    Perchance To Die
    Crimson Snow

    Less generic ones:
    My Enemy's Enemy
    The Worry of Tomorrow
    Once Upon A Spy
    River Ran Dead
    The Moguls of Death
    Horizons of Agony
    The Last Trick
    The Invisible Factor
    The Shadower
    Left For Hell
    Guardians of Six
    Tears of a Sparrow
    Forever, For Now
  • As long as the title doesn't contain the words "kill", "die", "death" or "dying", then I'm happy.

You know, Risico could work as a title, especially if the villain of the next piece is named that. Could work as a last name.

Seeing as how I haven't read any of the books, yet, what exactly does Risico mean?

It's a misspelling of 'risk' in another language.

EDIT: Actually, apparently it's risk in Danish. I always heard it was a misspelling though..

Oh. I should have known that, seeing as how I'm Swedish. But "risk" in Swedish is just "risk". So yeah.

I found it researching one of the Fleming Bonds, but it was 'For Now, Forever' and I though it sounded better re-arranged. Turns out its a jazz song o.0

I might save it for one of my film projects.. if I ever get around to writing some of my ideas.

But for Bond, it sums up his lifestyle perfectly. He has the attitude that he'll live forever in the moments his life are most at risk. And when he lives through these moments, he lives forever, for now.

If the next title used Flemings:

    Risico
    Property of Lady
    The Hildebrand Rarity

    If using non-Fleming continuation novel:

    Carte Blanche (my top choice)
License Renewed (my other top choice)
    For Special Services
    Colonel Sun
    Role of Honour

    Creative title:

007 rises (a play on The Dark Knight rises because Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace is James Bond Begin, Skyfall is the Dark Knight, so let's make the next Bond film title 007 rises)

'007 Rises'? I'm sorry, but do you have any idea how much criticism, flak, and complaints that title would receive? The film would receive copious amounts of negativity months and months before release.

    I also like 'Colonel Sun.'

Yeah I know, but a lot of people are comparing Daniel Craig's Bond to Nolan's Batman. Even Skyfall has been compared to The Dark Knight. So I jokefully called Bond 24 007 Rises to joke around the next Bond film would be like The Dark Knight Rises.

    The Bond Rises.

In the short story the character of Columbo has a slightly pigden-written accent. When he tells Bond "In this business there is much risk" it's written "In this pizness is much risico".

Fleming did love to add "colour" by trying to approximate mispronounciations...

Yeah, I see that a lot in LALD. Makes it entertaining to read the dialogue, that much is certain.
