I can never like DAD, but I do enjoy watching it on occasion because it is SO stupid and OTT, the desired effect??? and it's excesses paved the way for CR and eventually Skyfall so something to be, at least, grateful for there. I feel it's a shame that Brosnan's most assured turn as Bond (in my opinion) is here, and seems a bit wasted as he's surrounded by pantomime villains like Gustav Graves et al, and that dire turncoat fencing girl (the worst performance by any Bond girl??).

DAD will never be (in my eyes anyway) a good Bond movie, but after a couple of pints it's most enjoyable

We only celebrate positive events. That's the point of celebration...

    Quantum Of Superiority

    Hahaha. I love that.

If I may chime in, Die Another Day is a cinematic embarassment rivaled only by perhaps Batman and Robin. I know that it was supposed to be a 'homage' movie to the Bonds which had gone before it, but alot of the things were handled in a tacky way. The invisible car was actually quite cool, but perhaps it should have been more like a camoflage, rather than all-out-invisible. The robocop suit was ridiculous as was the gene-therapy concept, and the massive satellite laser, the surfing on an iceberg, Madonna's cameo and even the intro-titles which in my opinion are terrible. Also didn't like the bullet in the gunbarrel, I thought that was dumb. I really, really really wanted to like it but it's just a really dumb film. Frankly I'm shocked how people can put it into the same category as Quantum of Solace, one is a cartoon and the other is some fine cinema.

Also, does that mean we're going to have to endure a homage Bond movie every ten years? Are we going to see another Die Another Day-type 007 movie for the 60th anniversary? (shudder)...

There was much worse dialogue than this. In fact, I don't see that line as corny- she's just describing the mask with some attitude in her voice.

Die Another Day has a great first half, and sub-par second half, symptomatic with the rest of Brosnan’s era. The first half of his movies had so much potential, but played it safe with loud bangs and not very good boner gags.
    I feel TND slows down when Bond leaves Germany;
    I can't pinpoint exactly where TWINE's weakness lies- but I know it's there;
DAD drops a great plot (Bond's return to form after x months of torture) in favour of the usual space death ray plot.

However, I thought GE was one of the handful of Bond films that was solid all the way through.

Not at all. While there were bound to be homages in the 40th (and no doubt in the 60th, too), IMO, the fact that DAD was also the 20th film in the canon largely influenced the amount of homages showing up in the end product. So the question to ask is: will future Bond films that fall both on an anniversary, and film #30, #40, #50 etc. be packed full of needless homages?

RE: Another anniversary we're forgetting - Has the time come to finally celebrate DAD?

I'll celebrate DAD by going surfing somewhere snowy... but seriously, it does deserve a mention at least. Just out of interest, did TLD get a celebration back in '87- being the 25th anniversary?

DAD will end up like the 1967 Casino Royale. It is Bond by name but Snoop Doggy Dogg may as well have played the villain. And Vin Diesel may as well have played Bond.

It is an embarrassment. QOS at least does not throw the story away and Bond is far more fascinating throughout. I would take the opening car chase of QOS over the entire DAD movie. Just that face expression of Craig as he shoots the car off the mountain side is incredible and says Bond, James Bond is back!

The scene where Brosnan walks into the hotel in his pyjamas is Bond humour for the idiot. He throws away all the potential of the film's opening in that scene and I bet he is crying in his beer now seeing Craig soaring with the character and integrity of the series.

The advent of Craig means that DAD has been executed for crimes against the franchise! If I wanted to torture terrorists, then I think DAD is worse than water boarding.

Ehhh.....I'd beg to differ. At one time, about two and a half years ago, I would agree with you, because TWINE used to be my least favorite Brosnan Bond. However, I re-asserted my beliefs on that, and found that TWINE was actually better than DAD, and that Brosnan's movies, for me, simply rank in order of appearance. TWINE easily beats DAD in characters, performance from Brosnan (though both were excellent), plausability, plot line, and action sequences. Soundtrack and locations I'll give to DAD, but everything else goes to TWINE.

TWINE I find quite dull unfortunately, i get bored watching the film. DAD for all its faults is amusing and that's why i find it easier to watch.

A movie with such faults isn't amusing in my book.

Only bright spots are the first half and Pierce's performance.

As this is a celebratory thread go away and wash your potty mouth before coming back.

Some people actually enjoy DAD and you should respect their opinion as they do not go to the threads were you mutually celebrate the new Bondmovie.

Well @SaintMark, the question posed is 'Is it time to celebrate DAD?' which allows all opinions, so you must accept the members who answer 'no' as well as 'yes'.

And as long as we keep it civil and don't make anyone feel foolish for offering their opinions, then all is well with the world :-)

Never mind my mouth, but after watching DAD, I needed to wash the dirt of a film from my mind. SF really raises the stakes and does not make the characters into caricatures. Even Roger Moore said it went too far and if he thinks so, then it proves my point.

At least the comical Moore entries were actually funny and Moore let you know that you should have a laugh too and not take it too serously. But DAD starts out dead serious and still continues to take itself seriously not realising it is falling about all over the place in it's own ridiculousness.

I love Bond but DAD let me down immensely. Had it been a XXX movie, it would have been fine.

Moonraker though not my favourite, gets the balance right better. Yes it has funny moments but it is not as annoying. Lois Chiles is an excellent actress who puts Halle Berry to shame. I mean seeing Berry's acting when she is electrocuted by the villain is terrible by 2002 standards.

Lois Chiles is attractive and interesting. She has great chemistry with Roger Moore and they look good together. I buy the attraction and the fact that her character is very trained in her role in the film.

That is my backed up opinion. And if you like the film, then I can live with that.

The thread doesn't read "Why I love DAD and love to whack myself off to it three times before breakfast" does it?

Its asking if the film is worthy of celebration and alot of people are saying no.

Personally I think we shoud lure LT to a meeting under the pre-tense of a "tenth anniversary celebration and then ask him direct, no holds barred questions.

Considering she has an Oscar and Gary Oldman does not says it all @Bain123

This is the film that proved the need for Daniel Craig is ASAP. Craig cleaned up the mess of DAD nicely and did not leave even a tiny trace of it.

The symbol of the disintegrating jumbo jet at the end of DAD is a perfect metaphor of the franchise destroying itself.

I suppose Oscars are questionable but SOMETIMES they get it right. Last night I re-watched Silence of the Lambs (one of my favourite films) for the first time in a few years. Ms Foster was phenomenal in it. Her reaction when she realises she is standing feet away from Buffalo Bill alone secured that Oscar

In fairness Berry might have been great in Monsters Ball but I haven't seen the film.

Jodie Foster is something else. Halle Berry is an ex-beauty queen and her past caught up with her in terms of acting in DAD. Because she had an Oscar, I assume no one on the set of DAD had the nerve to tell her that what she is doing in DAD is sh*te.

Before DAD came out, I heard so much about Halle and her Oscar nod. I tell you, I thought I was dreaming it was so bad in the cinema.

It's certainly somethig to win both an Oscar AND a Razzie. Didn't Sandra Bullock also achieve the same?

Whatever the truth is about Bullock, Berry was woefully miscast and made Mary Goodnight in TMWTGG look smart. They were both dumbed down Bond girls. And in the next film we would get the supremely talented Eva Green who had the perfect modern qualities and will stand the test of time.

We are all different Jim. I guess it depends on attraction to a Bond girl. Me, I thought Halle Berry was sexier in Catwoman.

It's crap. The first hour is good, the sword fight being a high point, along with bond walking into a hotel in his jim jams, but Halle Berrys character is unlikeable, the cgi is insulting and the entire ending is just unentertaining.

The worst effect though isn't the surf wave. It's either Jinxs backward dive, or the sled going over the glacier. John stears did this I believe? Unbelievable.

I hate the intrusion of Americanisms into bond. "your momma", "Ahm checkin' out" etc. the only saving grace is Bond ordering a 61 Bollinger.

Utter drivel that insults the intelligence and wallet of the audience.

Part of me actually finds Goodnight more annoying. I can't put my finger on why. I suppose Jinx doesn't trigger a deadly solar device with her arse cheeks. While she is unbearably smug she doesn't act like a COMPLETE airhead.

The "Psychadelic light mask" line never bothered me but I didn't like the way she said "and another million in reserve" when she was walking along in the underground bunker with Bond and Robinson.

Perhaps it's just me, who has a problem with that line. Berry just turns into ham as the movie goes on. Which is a shame, when Berry is first introduced she is quite intriguing.

Craig just happened to star in CR. He gave a good performance but I think it's unfair to say he cleaned up the mess of DAD, he was given a good script. It's like saying DAD was Brosnans fault, it's not, he was given a bad script.
