    Are you aware that under the EU's General Data Protection Regulation, fully in force since May 2018, it is illegal to publicize pictures of license plates (unless justified for special reasons), since it's a case of processing someone else's (the registered car owner's) personal data...? Just saying.

    It probably makes no difference if this is an non-EU server (is it???) and you, of course, are not an EU citizen (also, quite frankly, they should have other things to worry about anyway). But just for comparison, in newspaper photographs showing city traffic or freeway jams over here, license plates are always blurred or pixelated out as well.

    As long as the car owner isn t identified, I don t see any problems. These cars move around in the public sphere for all to see, anyway.

    I'd recognize EU law on this one.

    For conversation, though, this seems a bit conflicted to choose and display a personalized plate in public then alternately expect limits on how it's seen.

    Following up, there are similar concerns in the US but they're specific to photographing plates as data collection in automated systems/databases using OCR. There is also a prohibition for outright harassment by posting a license plate image with disparaging remarks or accusing the owner of an illegal act.

    Beyond that the US view is that a photo image taken in public is the property of the photographer and can be posted on line.


    Description of the EU General Data Protection Regulation:
    The regulation applies if the data controller (an organisation that collects data from EU residents), or processor (an organisation that processes data on behalf of a data controller like cloud service providers), or the data subject (person) is based in the EU. Under certain circumstances,] the regulation also applies to organisations based outside the EU if they collect or process personal data of individuals located inside the EU. The regulation does not apply to the processing of data by a person for a "purely personal or household activity and thus with no connection to a professional or commercial activity." (Recital 18)

    The bar may be set low, but an international example for this is Wikipedia, which openly presents images of plates and links to more.

    There's a monthly printed magazine from RegTransfers (one of the big UK traders) which has a 'plates spotted around the country' section, and they also post them daily on their Facebook page. Since they've been around from 1982 they presumably know the law perfectly well.

    In short, there is no legal or GDPR reason you can't take a photo of someone else's car and/or its numberplate. Most owners of private plates (myself included) would probably be quite happy for it to be shown off; that is really what they're for!
