    Sorry, but that's ridiculous. So they were not "trying hard enough" with SP? Even if it mattered, it hardly holds up. SP har the highest budget of any Bond film. They went all in and more.

    I perfectly understood your post. It just doesn't hold up. Even if trying too hard would be a relevant excuse for anything, it doesn't make sense. They tried just as hard with Spectre.

    I mean DAD went TOO far due to the 40th anniversary !

    It doesn't give them an excuse but SP had no 'noose round their neck' to make the film special due to an anniversary.

    A few things I prefer from DAD:

    Bond performance: DAD
    Main villain: DAD
    Main henchman: DAD
    Dialogue: DAD
    Aston vs Jag car chase: DAD
    Soundtrack: DAD

    Both Bond performances are average-ish. Gustav is my least favorite Bond villain, and I think Waltz's Blofeld is a bit overhated, so SP takes that one. I'll take Hinx for the henchman, but he is still not one of the all-time best. Dialogue is meh in both movies. Also, don't really care a lot for the car chases in both movies. I can hardly remember DAD's soundtrack actually; SP's gets too much hate. While I also sometimes get annoyed with the reused SF tracks, some of the stuff in it isn't so bad.

    DAD's soundtrack is memorable. Besides Madge's theme and end credits remix, I can remember the music when Bond arrives in Cuba and driving the 'fast' car; London Calling during the plane trip; and the Bondian music at the start of the car chase. As for the SP soundtrack? I can only remember TWOTW theme. Says it all, really.

    Obviously it's subjective, because I have a hard time remembering a lot of music from DAD. A lot of that is surely because I watch it the least of the Bond movies, right next to MR.

    Hinx was great, but didn't get to do much. His fight with Bond was, however, one of the best in the series. Perhaps if Hinx returns (and I think he will), he may surpass Zao.

    As corny as the dialogue was in DAD, it was entertaining, memorable, very quotable.

    Hinx was very good but would have been great had they made him a bit more dimensional and allowed him to show his intellect as well as his brawn.

    I feel this may be holding Spectre to higher standards than other Bond films have been held to. Jaws is considered an iconic Bond villain but has his “intellect been shown as well as his brawn”?

    DAD is utterly ludicrous, and it has huge problems. But it is anchored extremely well by Brosnan. The villains motivation is interesting and its an amusing rewatch.

    SP is a far better made film, but the terrible Oberfeld stuff, and the reach for extra pretension make it a real slog for me to watch.

    I have to say, although neither are great films, I would sooner turn my brain off and rewatch DAD.

    Spectre thrashes. It's one of the weaker films, but even so it's obviously a cut above DAD.

    Look, I know it isn't a high point of the series, but at least try and pay attention.

    Spectre is bottom of my list. I suppose it betters DAD in a few categories, but overall I prefer DAD.

    I must admit though I am fond of DAD for nostalgic reasons. After all, it was my first Bond in theaters.

    Upon a recent rewatch, I'm not convinced the "fun" argument works for DAD. It's far too smug to be enjoyably awful. Like, I can easily picture Tamahori, Pervert and Weird making Gustav Grave's conceited little grin as they high-five each other over how "clever" they were.

    I think perhaps DAD's dialogue only becomes corny when the scene involves Jinx or Gustav, except for Bond's first meeting with Gustav at Blades. Pretty much everything else is fairly grounded, from Colonel Moon's speech to Bond on Western hypocrisy, the abandoned station for agents with M, Cuban scenes etc.

    Corny is one thing, but Jinx' "there's a mouthful" line really was in poor taste for a Bond film.
