It did, which probably helped to turn TDK into the (then) highest-grossing superhero* film of all time.
I had hoped that 2018's Tomb Raider could have made enough money at the BO and from DVD/BR sales to convince the money people to invest in a sequel. I really wanted to see more of Alicia as Lara.
(* Yes, some people insist that Batman isn't a "superhero". Not having that debate here, though.)
That's why I treasure TR2 as a misunderstood bundle of fun and joy with an excellent Alan Silvestri score and loads of cool action, even when Lara hits a CGI shark on the nose. :-D
So why not so well in cinemas? What do you think?
The stench of B&R (still)? Superhero fatigue from tons of early 21st Century Marvel films? I didn't understand it either.
Anyway, it's not always easy to explain why films turn in a smaller profit than predicted or hoped. I thought that Alicia's TOMB RAIDER showed great potential, but it became just another number 1 without a number 2. It's no science, evidently, so in the end... who knows why?
If I'm looking at the wiki, it said that the revenues were app. 275 million with a budget of 90-106 mil. That sounds ok, but only 57 of those were 'domestic'. As in it appealed more to an international public than an American one. And I think that's not what studios want.
So the most likely reason is investors chickening out.
Raimis 3 Spidermans were really big things. One of the biggest even today. Acting directing everything ticked boxes big time.
And your point is?
Yeah I'm not sure the MCU films have really hit the heights of those for me, superhero-wise. Lara Croft on the other hand, I think is a character which has never had a really creatively successful screen adaptation yet.
There is good and better movies in superhero genre.
Evidently, that's true. But your comment was a bit of a non-sequitur to the discussion at hand.
Been replaying all three games in recent weeks, they all stand up well though I would be all for another upgrade.
I replayed Legend a few weeks ago, and though it is a little on the short side, I still love it. That's my favourite version of Lara, Keeley Hawes had the perfect voice for Lara.
I am currently on the Japan level ready to have a major shoot out on Legend, the levels are short though a good variety of locations and challenges. All three games are great I struggle to pick a favorite, though Underworld does have a few stunning locations.
I am playing the trilogy on handheld for the first time which is making the games feel fresh. Keeley Hawes is great, feminine though tough.
