I say - give the guy a chance. Maybe there is a difference between the candidate and the man. If only a bit of his speech is true, it deserves a chance.
There is definitely a difference, and he will surprise everyone to the upside because the expectations are so low. This guy is a deal maker first and foremost. It's what he does. He will work with everyone to try and get the engine of Govt. working again. The infrastructure program he talked about yesterday is right up his alley and that's exactly the type of long overdue investment program that is needed to get people back to work.

I think it's a bit of a no-win situation for all Americans. No-one really liked Clinton. Perhaps the fact she's a woman helped her win the nomination but she represented more of the same. I'm sure many Democrat voters would have preferred a younger woman with less baggage.

And Trump is just Trump. Who knows if he's genuine? I doubt he even knows when he's telling the truth. Republican voters will have to hope he can deliver on some of his promises but don't hold your breath. This is a guy that used to say Hillary Clinton was a great woman and now wants her locked up. Mr. Consistent he ain't. ;) He'll probably be useless in office or semi-impotent. George W Bush was mocked, he took the US into war with Iraq and got voted back for a second term. It's all crazy. Politics doesn't make any sense! I think a lot of it comes down to luck. Trump got lucky, perhaps, and will ride it while it lasts.

A lot of liberals are fleeing to Canada, apparently. Surely Mexico is a better option, far more diverse over there.

Trump has few ideological leanings. He has been consistent on the trade thing for decades (he used to rail against Japan in the 80's). He has also been consistent on national security for decades. He wants judges who are strict interpreters of the Constitution. Those are his core principles. The rest can be negotiated, which in America's 'checks and balances' govt system is a good thing.

He also has been consistent for years that Govt. must run lean and efficiently, with clear accountability to the electorate. He ran his campaign on a relative shoestring and used creative and unconventional but yet highly effective methods to deliver his message. I expect similar creativity in government.

The big change on foreign policy is that he is more likely to suggest a strategy to keep Assad in power to stem the violence in Syria. The common enemy now is ISIL/Daesh. If I were them, I'd be very afraid, because now the full power of the US military, Russian and Iranian military is going to come down on them like a tonne of bricks. The big loser is Saudi Arabia (funder of ISIL).

Delusional Clinton fans from within the party on the news refusing to admit that she contributed towards a Trump win. That attitude will not help in 4 years time, they need to completely review what the country needs/wants

I hope she gives a gracious concession speech to the American people. It didn't come yesterday, but hopefully she is up to delivering it today.

It's not over until it's over, @FLeiter. Don't count Trump out until he's lost. I'm damn near expecting my vote to be thrown out tomorrow because I live not just in a red state but in Pence's state.

Hang in there. ALL the polls show Hillary 4-7+, even Faux News. Having Hoosier roots along the White River and Route 50 and the Hatchet House, it's over. I don't see a Luke Zeller on Trump's bench to save the day with a miracle shot. I see Rudy trying to pull his shorts on over his head and Christie at the buffet line at the Chew and Choke.

    This is what they're missing.

Actually, as of early Wednesday morning, Clinton has more votes. The reverse is true: the fear of the fewer is mightier than the strength of the more.

Hey, Trump...guess who's warming up? The irony just drips on this one.

What's dripping, rolling down cheeks, forming puddles, expanding to lakes, to oceans, are the tears of Hillary acolytes, hoisted on their own petards. ( I don't even know what that means, but I like the sound of it)
Have I expired and gone to heaven? Worked all morning, and much of the night before. Now home relaxing with dog and a cold beer, waiting for HILLARY CONCESSION SPEECH!!!!!!
    Dog is very excited.
Owner though is very relaxed, albeit insufferably and smugly satisfied.

What do you expect people to do who now, this morning, have to question their futures in a country that doesn't welcome them for the religions they practice or who they choose to share their love with? The defeat is bad, of course, but what this defeat means, a return to excused bigotry through the prism of "religious freedom" espoused by Pence and Trump that really makes you want to stop existing. We just took 500 massive steps back as a society. The Stone Ages feel nearer now.

Well that was a gracious concession speech and the right one to deliver. One of her best and most authentic deliveries as well. I wish her all the best and thank her for her service to the nation over many years.

I love Trump supporters. Progress is so foreign, so alien, so frightening a prospect to you. Trump supporters proved yesterday that they don't want progress. They want a man who clearly isn't up to the job just because the other candidate scared them. Because she would have progressed this nation.

An even better speech by Obama. Struck the right conciliatory tone. I shall miss his inspirational rhetorical flair.

I feel sorry for the man. He now has to accept a bigot who refused his presidency into the White House. He has to hand the keys off to the wrong man.

Your attention to and grasp of the issues at hand are commendable @bondjames. Much rational level-headed posting in this thread.Informative too! You are a credit to your fine nation!
Trump is going to get to work. Like most business types, he is a doer. I fully expect he will be huddling with Paul Ryan in very short order, and reviewing what Ryan wants to get through. The pair are both competent and motivated to streamline/eliminate burdensome regulation and such that hinders economic activity.
The Alberta oil-sands folks here are no doubt energized by this win. Trump has said he will work to get the Keystone pipeline flowing. The Cdn economy thanks him in advance.

A question for @Germanlady. Given Brexit then this election result, what are your feelings on next years German elections? Are we witnessing the rise of the right throughout Europe (by that I don't mean extremists but parties who are prepared to put their own people before others in the DT vein) and what are their chances of taking power from Merkel?

To me DTs success could be the lighting of the touchpaper which allows the European 'populist' movement to really make themselves heard.

In reflection, it's been a bad year, in many ways. So many good people lost, trying tragedies, continual strains in our relationship with authorities and institutions, a crumbling of our perceptions of what we thought elections were, and how bizarre everything surrounding this nightmare was.

The Democrats have done their part. Hillary stood up and held back the tears to keep true to the values of strength through togetherness and a respect for all Americans of any race, sexuality, gender or background that she has fought to uphold all her life. Obama stood tall in the face of a campaign loss he fought so hard to support and make a reality, and made a move to work with Trump despite all the times the man tried to deflate him and his presidential legacy. Trump has said in his victory speech and in his phone calls with Clinton and Obama that he is ready to unite and work for the good of America, and we can only hope that it's true, and that Democrats and Republicans can do their part to compromise equally, retaining the progressive human rights reforms Obama helped to instate while making moves to fix all the leaks we have in our national debt, employment, healthcare and the challenges facing us abroad through immigration and ISIS threats that will require the best of all of us.

It's tempting to curl up and weep for the cynical outcomes that may be reaching us in light of last night's events, but when you're knocked down, it does nobody any good to stay there prostrate collecting dust. Far too many people in our history have died or have been put asunder for standing up for what they believed in for us to now decide to throw in the towel.

This will be a learning experience for everyone at every level of society, from the grass roots working men and women to the highest echelons of our government. Now more than ever we see that the only polls that are worth discussing are those unfolding the night of, and nothing more. Now more than ever we see how manipulative and counterintuitive the media is, trying to cover the news but in doing so, bearing responsibility for widening the fault lines that this election's dirty politics had already set to crack. And now more than ever we see how far the feeling of disenfranchisement has run amongst our nations's people, to the point that they have favored the ultimate outsider above any other candidate, regardless of temperament or lack of experience.

Hopefully we can forgive-but not forget-and move on from this moment stronger and more united in a mutual partnership that is more lasting than fickle or fleeting. Not because we should, but because we have to.

So let me get this straight.. trump says he wants to deport illegal immigrants/Mexicans and the take away from that is "Trump wants to deport all Mexicans" so are they implying ALL Mexicans are here illegally?? That's kind of racist..

    "Bigot", "Bigot", blah blah blah...

God forbid someone tells the truth and he is a racist. You have illegals pouring in through Texas where I live getting free housing, free healthcare and free college which I am not offered and I am an American citizen who pays tons of taxes.

They get paid in cash and don't report their income either.

I mean let's look at the facts....

All celebrity men are Christian men and never say anything discriminating towards women? Wrong! Everyone in America worships these artist who talk about threesomes, referring to women as b1tches and hoes, etc and that's totally cool but the minute a tape leaks of a guy joking around which 90% of grown men do it's such a horrible thing.

Hillary was being investigated by the FBI and they found nothing wrong okay then they re open the case.

Whether she was innocent or guilty the bigger picture is that the average American watches tv and says oh my god she's being investigated by the FBI she is a criminal! That definitely did not help her election at all..

There's video footage of Hillary flat out saying she hates gays and does not support them and then what two years later "I love the gays!!". Video of Obama dissing Hillary and saying she is bad for America. I mean come on.

If you actually listen to Trump's speech he just gave he labeled out perfectly what he wants to do and it's honestly amazing. America used to be the best country in the world, business was booming, everyone wanted to come to America and live the American dream!

Eight years of Obama and what do we get? Overpriced healthcare? I had to drop insurance way to expensive.

Imagine being twenty two and working 6-7 days a week, paying car insurance, health insurance, rent, gas/food and oh yeah trying to pay for college. It's not easy but I never complain. It is funny how Clinton supporters posted statuses saying she would obviously win and Trump supporters are delusional and butt hurt but oh wait the Republicans and Trump won by a landslide.
