This has turned into a dubbing thread after my comment about the German trailer, it seems.

I think dubbing is ok as long as the original version is also available to people. Let them choose.

It's not only that. I live in Barcelona, Spain. And IMO the "Version Original" are usually of lesser quality. They look older, have not so good seats, not to mention the sound system used or the screen size. And here comes in IMAX. There ISSS no IMAX theatre around here for "Versión Original" movies. None. Nada. Noppes!!

At these times I truly long for my native country Netherlands, which is the most densely "populated" IMAX-original-version-Country....after the UK. I truly miss it :-(.

I don't see anywhere any blood connection between Bond and Blofeld. Certainly not in the teaser. All we know is that a man named Franz Oberhauser claims to know him.

As far as I see it, "Franz Oberhauser" and James Bond were merely childhood friends, who share one common link: their dads, Andrew Bond and Hannes Oberhauser.

By the way, we don't know exactly for sure if the tall man on the picture is Hannes Oberhauser or Andrew Bond no? Yes, it's highly likely it is Hannes Oberhauser, but still.

Regarding the complaints about "re-writing" parts of the factual written information that Ian Fleming left us: I find those complaints rather stupid.

What the Bond producers and the directors did ever since "Casino Royale", was going back to Ian Fleming's material. And obviously, when "SPECTRE" went into pre-production, the whole team -Barbara, Michael, Sam, Daniel- did extensively re-read at least a few novels. Most likely "Octopussy" and "Thunderball", to get fully informed about the Oberhausers, Blofeld and S.P.E.C.T.R.E..

I fully admire that. And I especially admire the fact that they use these facts to slightly update it with new material. Is it dishonest to Fleming's legacy? Off course not. It's admirable AND immensely creative that they make new connections that basically follow Fleming's original storylines, without changing them at all. They are entirely new connections that Fleming did not write about. I call it: Lending the late Fleming a helping hand to continue and expand his universe, his legacy, his continuity.

I would be more dissatisfied and unhappy, IF the producers and the writing staff really turn Blofeld into a blood brother of Bond. THEN you're falsifying Fleming's original stories. That is something I dislike.

Also, there were days when Bond producers came up with completely new storylines WITHOUT referencing any of Fleming's stories. I can think of "AVTAK". Now look how that movie turned out. It's admirable to come up with something completely new, but it's also my feeling that when Bond producers do that, they start making creative mistakes. They start to think in terms of elements. "Now that part needs to be in the film" or "Let's look at Goldfinger, because this part is not in there". I usually find that a flawed approach.

The best way to make a near-perfect Bond-film, is to always go back to Fleming's work. Even "LTK" (Milton Krest, "The Hildebrand Rarity") and "SF" (Bond's family, "You Only Live Twice") had these references. And IMO they worked. Barbara Broccoli, Michael Wilson, Sam Mendes and Daniel Craig have shown us consistently that they are as nerdy and geeky as us fans, by constantly re-reading Fleming's work, and perhaps even extend his work with new plots and twists, without destroying the original Fleming storyline.

    I love that approach.

And in return?? We're completely spoiled by a wonderful sense of continuity during this Craig-era. Something that Fleming already took into account in his own novels, but that at the time, the 1960's, could not be taken into account due to issues related to finance and scale of production.

Just want to say: Hear, hear! I love this post and agree with every word. I think we're in very good hands with the current team, including Daniel Craig, who seems to take Fleming's work as seriously as any actor ever has (including Dalton, who felt a true obligation to do Fleming proud, which he did IMO).

Thanks buddy ;-). Just wanted to inject a sincere feeling of "on-topic-ness" :-P.

I've been wondering, how do we think the next trailer will impact on the first? I've been speaking to friends who aren't clued up on the progress and production of SP and, like myself, they're loving the stripped back nature of the teaser. A moody, dramatic, intriguing little gem in a sea of action-packed previews for the year's other blockbusters. I wonder if they'll still keep the action to a minimum in the next one? It'll obviously feature some, but I'm hoping they keep it dramatically tantalising. I wouldn't like the next to undermine the first, but rather be an extension of it, with some flourishes of action. Either way, I'm sure they'll do a decent job.

    This,
but we have to take into consideration, that a lot of the audiences out there will never stop being thirsty for brutal action. Their money is needed, too. Badly, I might add. If China feels, its just talkie talk, they not gonna show up. Their money is needed as well. Badly...etc etc.

So, this in mind, I hope the next teases the action.

True. It almost feels as though they should cut region-specific trailers. Like you say, China will want something along the lines of M:I. I guess the great thing about SP is that there appears to be so much action, they only need show one in bulk and flashes of others (if at all) or fleeting glimpses of each. SF didn't really have that luxury.

Yes, show tasty bits of each to tell the world, its there and then concentrate on the story and great dialogues, if possible, to satisfy those, who want both from their Bond.

I have no doubts the next trailer will be more action oriented. That said I would love another teaser in the same vein as the one recently released. I thought it was excellent.

I think the next trailer will most likely feature the Bond girls, Hinx and the secondary characters more. This teaser was very Bond and SPECTRE centric.
  • I have been reading a lot of comments online about the SPECTRE trailer and a lot are very, very positive. So much so that people who have claimed to never have seen a Bond film at the cinema are planning on going to see SPECTRE on the big screen! Seems like the teaser is doing its job.

Do we agree now that the marketing/publicity machine for "SPECTRE" is top notch? Especially compared to other spy movies like "Mission: Impossible"? Can we...trust Sony/EON/MGM a bit more now ;-)?

Regarding a 2nd trailer....I think it will be more action oriented, perhaps with some humurous lines as well.

Now a clear look at how the publicity for "SPECTRE" has been shaping up so far:

    04.12.2014:
--> Title presentation at Pinewood Studios, simply "SPECTRE", creating orgasms around the fan community :-P. Some people at first were a bit disappointed, but I thought this: By jolly, this is damn smart from a marketing point-of-view.
--> Official 1st Teaser Poster with the bullit hole turning into the Octopus-logo.
--> Official 1st "visual footage of the title evolving in a logo", basically making it a small teaser trailer in itself:

--> No press conference, but a "photo call", leaving many narrative story elements open for debate.
--> Automotive websites are reporting about this "sudden" new Aston Martin DB10.

    07.01.2015:
--> First photoshoot or "photocall", on top of the Gaislachkogl in Sölden, Austria.
--> Present: Daniel Craig, Léa Seydoux & Dave Bautista.
--> Also these photocalls generate some nice publicity.

    11.02.2015:
--> First videoblog, basically giving us the first footage from Austria and a behind-the-scenes look of "SPECTRE".
--> Make no mistake, these so called "vlogs" are "teaser trailers" in itself too. They help generating more awareness on the film. And Bond started this tradition with "Quantum Of Solace".
--> Marvel Entertainment is doing exactly the same:

    26.02.2015:
--> Second videoblog or "vlog", this time with director Sam Mendes.
    --> Another ingenious little "trailer".

    08.03.2015:
--> Second "photocall", this time at the mayor's house in Rome, Italy.
--> Present: Daniel Craig & Monica Bellucci.
--> "Bond's knee seems to be okay guys!!"

    16.03.2015:
--> Official 2nd Teaser Poster featuring Daniel Craig in a Steve McQueen/Roger Moore-esque pose.
--> Generating quite some media attention on fashion blogs. It's all about the "turtle-neck"!

    20.03.2015:
--> Third "photocall" ánd first real press conference, in Mexico-City, Mexico.
--> Present: Stephanie Sigman & Michael G. Wilson (producer)

    27.03.2015:
--> Extensive coverage of the first real teaser trailer, on a date -27.03.2015- that is way way earlier than normally used to be the case with Bond films. The "Skyfall" teaser appeared in May 2012.
--> The trailer itself: A dastardly, ingeniously crafted trailer, that goes viral everywhere. IMO, the smartest teaser trailer ever from the Craig-era and the Brosnan-era combined.
--> Presented to journalists in Mexico as a small "movie event"
--> Extensive Q&A-sessions with producers Barbara Broccoli & Michael G. Wilson.
--> Extensive interviews appear on various movie websites.

In all my life as a Bond fan (the first one I saw in cinema was "Licence To Kill" in 1989) I've never seen such extensive coverage. Not just extensive, I call the marketing/publicity machine of Sony/MGM/Eon for "SPECTRE" truly magnificent.....even better as compared to "CR", "QOS" and "SF". What they've basically been doing to us fans and many other non-Bond-fans since December 4th 2014, was "brainwashing" us with "SPECTRE"! It's as simple as that.

So far the new Bond film "SPECTRE" keeps showing up on movie websites. Sony/MGM/Eon know very well that you need to keep "SPECTRE" in the news every month, every week. The skillful scheduled promotional events are being released to us in a magnificent combo of trailers (2)/vlogs (3)/photocalls (4)/pressco's (1)/posters (2).

And this is not the only thing. Extra promotional results come from, here I go again, "big name actors". If you want it or not....fans of Dave Bautista (lots of Americans, WWE-fans, Marvel-fans) and Christoph Waltz (fans of Tarantino) will rush to the cinemas, especially after seeing the first teaser trailer.

The same goes for the cast. Sam Mendes is a "big name director". He's a magnet. Michael Wilson said it himself. He attracts actors that normally perhaps would not want to be in a Bond film.

And financially, I have a strong feeling that Sony/MGM/Eon have a "450/125 approach" for the USA and China. They know damn well that "Skyfall" did terrific globally, but they also know there's room for improvement for "SPECTRE" in the USA and China. In both territories "Skyfall" did good, but many other franchises did better.

Sony/MGM/Eon are, I think, aiming for a $450 Million box office result in the USA, similar to what "The Dark Knight Rises" and "The Dark Knight" did. And for China, they desperately want a PLUS $100 Million box office gross. Especially since the release of "Skyfall" got postponed to a very late date in China. Expect that, as we speak, heavy negotiations are taking place between Sony and CFGC Huaxia Distribution.

I still stand with my prediction: $1.2 Billion for "SPECTRE".

Let's be honest, it's very early doors. Thus far they've delivered, in my opinion, a decent logo reveal/poster, a rather underwhelming official teaser and a really brilliant teaser trailer. As I said in my post above, I'm intrigued to see where they go with the next trailer and how that will impact on what they've done so successfully with the teaser. As obvious as it sounds, they can promote the hell out of this movie, but it's the movie itself that has to deliver. I'm a firm believer that 007 does not court a hardcore fanbase in the way that other franchises do, see Marvel/Star Wars, and so the proof is always in the pudding. I'm excited to see the finished product in November.

Could be, although I'm a Star Trek-fan as well. That fanbase is very hardcore too. Perhaps....too...hardcore. As the past two Trek-films have been succesful, but came nowhere to the $500 Million box office threshold.

But I do agree with you that in the end the movie needs to work. That's another key to success. Critics need to generate the next step of "free publicity", when they write about "SPECTRE" being a complete top or a slight flop. It's also the key to a strong holdover (SF) or not (QOS).

Yeah, good point about Star Trek. I've never been a Trekkie myself, but always get the impression they're almost 'beyond hardcore', to the point where they are all unerringly objective about the films. In a way, they're probably the most similar to Bond fans.

I do genuinely think that positive reviews are the biggest key to SP's success. Sound obvious, but positive reviews for the 'SF sequel' will guarantee massive success, I imagine.

This has turned into a dubbing thread after my comment about the German trailer, it seems.

Well, we're talking about a franchise that makes most of his money in non-English countries, and whose next instalment will feature a main cast in which 2/3rd of the actors and actresses do not speak English as their native tongue. Dubbing is quite a topic then, actually. It is often overlooked or dismissed in a very vocal manner, but it is actually quite important in the big picture ! The dubbed versions of the trailer, Russia + French + Germany, have already 1.5 M views...

Lea Seydoux, in a recent interview, talked about acting in French vs acting in English, and well, she says..
it's far easier to act in English :)

I talked about the problems with subtitles and 3D, well IMAX is a bit the same. Seeing huge white letters on your IMAX screen, having to significantly look down to look at them, can be a problem for some moviegoers, without them being "idiots". I just looked at the schedules here in Paris, IMAX original version are very rare, even for blockbusters for which non-IMAX original versions are quite easy to find.

Many people dismissing dubbing are very vocal, but I will argue that you can like to watch dubbed versions and yet not be an idiot. As for "respect", tell me if you think you're really respecting the DoP when you watch the movie on a little screen. Have you seen YOLT on a big screen during a fan festival ? I have. It was dubbed, but I feel I have seen more the "true YOLT" than a subtitled YOLT on a computer screen.

Right now, I'm watching All the President's Men on TV. I have the choice between dubbing and subtitles. The dialog goes so fast, you here dialogs on the phone etc.. *and the dubbing is so incredibly good*, that I chose to look at the dubbed version. And I don't feel I'm an idiot. I will agree "incredibly good dubbing" seems to become rarer and rarer. But it exists.

About the marketing : Am I the only one to wonder why they "spoiled" the reveal with an Access Hollywood worldwide premiere ?? Is this a teaser for viewers interested in One Direction's crisis and Katy Perry's wardrobe ?

Yesterday I showed the son of my Moroccon friend Khalid "Quantum Of Solace". It was his first Bond film, and he was completely awedddd :-P. Especially when I said that there were 22 (24) more of these Bond films. Hehehe, always good to infect people with the Bond-virus :-P.

I Wonder if that is indeed a nod to director John Glen? Sam Mendes becomes the 1st director since Glen to direct 2 consecutive Bond films.
