I wonder how many critics of WOTW have changed their minds after a few more listens.

Not me. To avoid further ruining my anticipation for this great film, I've avoided listening to it since my early difficult attempts.

I hope to be pleasantly surprised in the theatre by the visuals, and perhaps greater orchestration for the song.

In the meanwhile, I've been listening to some of the classics from the past to tide me over and maintain interest until SP hits the big screen

So, no watching the music video, either, I take it.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

No, I've not watched the video. I heard it had some new scenes in it so I thought I'd pass and take it all in during the film in the theatre. I'm hoping to warm up to this song after I see it with the titles on an IMAX screen. If that doesn't do it, then I'm afraid nothing will. Here's hoping for the best...

I hope both you and I are "converted" to the SS song as I find it hard to imagine regarding a movie as a classic whilst not liking the main theme. I think if anyone looks to their top three in their own rankings, they will find that they love the music. If we are not converted , can SP get into a top ranking? interesting

The SS song? Do you mean "Sieg Heil Victoria"?

My third favourite Bond movie is QoS, but I find AWTD awful

I spotted this on Classic FM's website but I can't find it anymore - turns out Newman conducted the orchestra for this.....

Sam Smith, Barbara Broccoli and Sam Mendes about the song.

    Include footage of the movie.

Weird. It doesn't sound like it's been orchestrated for the score. So may be its not been incorporated into the score after all.

Dutch Top 40 update: Au... In weak 3 the song go from 35 to 36... His other song ''Omen'' go in the 11th weak from 30 to 40. Also if song next weak no longer be in Top 40, remember You Know My Name and Another Way To Die never stay in the list. Another Way To Day atleast stay in Tip Parade.

So you can say this top 8 from Brosnan and Daniel Craig era..:

    1. Skyfall (20 weaks in Top 40, 6 from those on number 1.)
    2. Die Another Day (13 weaks in Top 40, not higher then number 4.)
    3. Goldeneye (11 weaks in Top 40, not higher then number 14.)
    4. Spectre (On this moment 3 weaks in Top 40, highest place 35.)
    5. Quantum of Solace (9 Weaks in Tip Parade.)
    6. The World Is Not Enough (5 weaks in Tip Parade.)
    7. Tomorrow Never Dies (3 weaks in Tip Parade.)
    8. Casino Royale (Not listed, no wonder with not releasing the single!.)

With today ''Writing's On The Wall'' single released and 6 days to go before the movie be released, mabey is a bit of hope for next weak.

    Bit of a spoiler alert
according to ACE's review of the film on the CBN boards - the instrumental version of the song that's on the OST DOES appear in the film

Smith did an excellent job singing the song live for the first time on the Graham Norton show. I did like the song before now it is on.

I know some like it but just watched it on Norton and I'm afraid this is still probably the worst Bond theme ever for me.

It doesn't feel like a Bond theme and I wonder if they just thought yeah Sam Smith he's big pick him, whereas I can see why they thought Adele could work because of her previous work.

I hope next time round they look at the suitability of the artist and not their popularity and what the tabloids suggest.

This song is definitely NOT a grower, at least not for me. It just stays the same, every time I listen to it. There are Bondian moments but overall it´s just an dramatic love song and I tend to hate dramatic love songs. And this singer? What a mouse.

"Skyfall" and "You Know My Name" are still the classic theme songs of the Craig-era.

Dutch Top 40 update: The song's possible final 4th weak in the list. Song go from number 36 to 39. The movie get yesterdy his Dutch release, we should see or will make a difrence. The song is ignored on radio (exept this Top 40) and also in reviews about the movie.

Adele's Hello is ''De Klapper van de week''. That mean is it the Highest new song in the list and more goodnews: Number 1!. Beat Justin Bieber ''What do you mean'' after that song stay for 6 weaks on number 1 and now on number 2. Only ''Rolling in the deep'' (2010) and ''Skyfall'' (2012) earlier get this number one position and stay there for 7 and 6 weaks.
  • Funny, i'm not a fan of the song at all. Heard it multiple times, on the radio etc and every time i disliked it more and more. However, watching the movie, it actually works well as a companion to the opening titles.

Sam Smith has admitted that he was naïve when it came to writing a Bond theme and assumed everyone would “love it”.

Smith, 23, recorded Writing’s On The Wall, the theme for the 24th film in the spy franchise, Spectre.

The singer said being part of the Bond hype has been “absolutely mad” but that he was shocked by the initial response from fans to his theme.

Speaking to Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1 he said: “I was very naïve about the whole thing. I love the song so much and I still love it.

He should love it. On its own, it is a beautiful song. I am beginning to like it as a Bond theme, too.

His naivety is understandable given his age. Playing songs for mummy and daddy to gauge interest confirms this.

He's not to be blamed for this travesty imho (which in retrospect probably did some damage to the pre-release hype for SP outside of the UK where it, ever so briefly, hit #1).

The blame rests squarely with Mendes for this.

It takes a big man to admit his mistakes so big respect for him to go on the record like this. Interesting that he points out that he loves the song so much rather than thinking that he is writing for an audience , not his own personal tastes. This is what many of us said, its a SS song, not a Bond song. Interesting to see what boost the movies release will give to the songs sales.

I could hear the crowd booing SS at the premier when he was being interviewed. Thought that was a bit harsh tbh. I quite like it. True it's not the greatest of themes but its got quite a melancholic melody that fits the character and TRUMPS AWTD for me.

It proves that there are some insensitive thug fans that cannot behave, they should be barred from public showings of any 007 flic. I advocate a 007 law which bans morons from seeing any 007 movie.

Update: A 5th weak on the wall of top 40. Writings On The Wall go from 39 to 40. ''This is something I gotta face'' ''I'm prepared for this'' ''Tell me is this where I give it all up?''.

Writing's on the Wall is easily my least favorite Bond song. I was extremely disappointed when I heard it for the first time and still am.

I know this link has been posted before but focus on the music and how it really adds tremendously to the feel of the video and consider how it would have worked with an extended version of SS effort. I know he still has supporters but can we not generally agree that his attempt was weak? (at best)

Its not as bad as DAD, and it does work well with Kleinmans titles, but is still weak. Like the music of it, paticularly that intro.
