    ...so Sheriff JW Pepper is a Democrat. Interesting. Is this the only character in the series of whom we actually know his political preferences?

    Also, there's this boy (child) who tries to sell Bond that Elephant for 1000, no 500, I mean 100, 50 baht.

    I can't recall any other child ever playing a spoken part in a Bond film, is that correct?

    The kid at the water balloons in DAF is the only other I can think of.
    Not sure if the kids that bring Mr.White and Obanno a coke in CR have a line???

    The most spoken words by kids in a Bond film is the chorus of singing children in "Do You Know How Christmas Trees Are Grown," in OHMSS, but since it's a song it probably doesn't count for much.

    I agree. To this day that 'jump' scene is one of the greatest moments I've encountered in a theatre. Total badassery.

    I was watching TSWLM again the other day and strangely enough I haven't noticed before that when Bond visits Atlantis for the first time, he stares at the fish through the glass and sees a severed arm, probably the one of the girl's at the beginning!

    I've always noticed it, but never drew the link to the secretary before. I thought it looked like a man's arm, but you could be onto something.

    Someone mentioned the political preferences of characters. Geoffrey Keen's largely ignored character "The minister" appeared from 1977 to 1987. So in TSWLM he was a minister in a Labour government that went on to lose the May 1979 election. Then he stayed on right through the Conservative Thatcher years. Remember Mrs Thatcher was expressly recognised as the PM in FYEO at the end. Did he cross the floor? Was he a rare example of a member of the Lords who was a serving cabinet minister without party affiliation? Or did the producers decide it didn't matter? Or was he the precedent for the Judi Dench re-casting of M between DAD and CR - ie, same actor but different character occupying the same role in the series?

    I thought of that as well. It isn t common in Britain.

    Was watching 24 Season 2 recently which I watched originally in 2003, only just realised that it's John Terry (Leiter from TLD) that plays Bob Warner in it.

    Does anyone know if the role of Helga Brandt was originally supposed to be Sylvia Trench. I only ask because I just realized that Miss Brandt's line "I've got you now" kinda links back to Bond's "Looks like you're out to get me" line during the poker scene in Dr No. I think it could have worked, that Sylvia had ended up working as a secretary for the enemy. She would be the one woman (besides Moneypenny) that he can't charm, because she has already been burned too many times in the past. Would've made the part stand out a bit more, I think.

    I'm so glad they didn't do anything like that with Trench. The 60s films were far too clever to do that kind of arc with her.

    Trench's whole purpose was to be a stock character like an M, Moneypenny or Q with similar roles in Bond's life in each movie. There was an understanding (probably unofficially) between the Bond team and Eunice Gayson that once Trench showed up at the beginning of each movie with Bond, he would race off to another adventure (as in DN and FRWL) while she gets infuriated about being left behind. After several films of this wash and repeat formula Trench was then supposed to have a film where she was the leading Bond girl.

    I'm glad it didn't happen, to be honest. It's nice to have Trench for the first two films where she served her purpose and then the way was quickly made for the true drama of the piece. Seeing her character any more beyond FRWL would've been too stale and predictable. Her whole function in the narrative is to be Bond's woman at home base that he romances and enjoys his peacetime with before he's called out to another exotic adventure where he awaits a different set of company, be they enemies, allies or babes. I get the sense that following FRWL Sylvia got sick of being strung along by James and being put behind his schedule all the time, and told him to beat it. She's the quintessential symbolism in his life, the woman who wants him to commit and stay rooted, but his duty uproots him to more important work (sometimes world saving) every time they get intimate.

    It's kind of the same thing with Moneypenny and Sean's Bond, where they had a connection and fancy for each other, but knew neither could truly act on it with finality because of the work they both did, especially the globe-trotting latter. Bond isn't the settling down type, because of both his work and his personality.

    Hey, I just did a bit of searching and learned that the Russian secretary from TSWLM is called Rubelvitch, while Pushkin's girlfriend is called Rubavitch.

    Just noticed that Zorin's death scream is the exact same as Sandor's in TSWLM (and if that's the case, I can only assume the same scream was probably used elsewhere in the series).
