Since we're back to SP talk with a focus on Blofeld, I wanted to share a cool little piece of backstory to Waltz's Blofeld that we don't hear mentioned in the film itself.

From the great James Bond wiki:

"In a scene from an earlier draft of Spectre, it was revealed that in the 1990's, Oberhauser, having changed his name to Ernst Stavro Blofeld became part of a battalion of the French Foreign Legion called 'Les Spectre de St. Pierre' in Morocco. A fellow member of this battalion was the man who would later become known as Mr. White, and who would also become a member of Spectre. It is implied that the platoon was already involved in criminal dealings. At some point there was a sandstorm and Blofeld and White were left for dead by the rest of the battalion with eight fellow soldiers, without rations, in the middle of the desert. Blofeld killed the other eight men in the night, leaving only White alive to help him to get to and carry the 'food' (the eighth dead soldier). After the sandstorm was over, Blofeld, with White's assistance, developed the shadowy terrorist organization named after his legion, SPECTRE."

I certainly agree that if Bond 25 does feature Dan's return, I'd love to see Waltz right there with him, so that he can further develop his take on Blofeld in the way he desires (as he knows how to play baddies perfectly already). I love Blofeld in SP and find him fascinating for his obsessions with control (his drone like SPECTRE agents and torture tools that suck away free will) and his grudges based on a soft ego, so any chance to see more of him, I'm all for it.

The above backstory really captured my imagination when I read it a few month's back, and while it's clear to see in the film that Blofeld can be quite bloodthirsty, I miss not having that story given to the audience to further underscore his animal nature.

I think that the perfect spot for Bond to learn about Blofeld's actions while serving in the French Foreign Legion would've been during the meeting he has with Mr. White in Austria. After White tells Bond what Ernst did to finally bump him off for good, Bond could press him more and dig deeper to find why the two men broke apart, which would give White a perfect and credible opportunity to tell 007 about how he and Blofeld first met, detail how maniacal and mad he is, and how SPECTRE came into being long ago.

It's nice to have this backstory circulating out there and it's always in the back of my mind when I watch SP, I just wish it was made front and center in that White scene, to make it an ever greater moment in the film than it already was.

I read about this a while back; and this is another example that further highlights how badly conceived the writing is for this film. Nevermind the basic principles of, show don't tell buy they couldn't even at least be bothered to tell it.

When I originally read the White/Blofeld backstory I certainly found it interesting and it would've been something I'd like to have seen, however, what's done is done and in a way it might be a blessing in disguise.

Moving forward I would suggest that should Waltz return and if there were an appetite to continue with this (albeit fractured) continuity, it's certainly something that can be drawn upon. IIRC correctly it was a moment of exposition between Blofeld and Bond. This is ok, but a little trad and I feel like they can make better use of it next time around. It would allow Bond to do some genuine detective work that uncovers the Blofeld/White 'story' if you will, moving away from their childhood connection and shifting attention back to this force of nature, (that should be) Blofeld. It can be expanded upon and serve as a catalyst within the story, rather than a neat bit of fleshing out.

Actually Waltz always talks like this. He never gives a completely serious interview and he likes to be modest and is the master of understatements.

I have read and heard so many interviews with Waltz on Swiss/German TV, I do like him a great deal for his wicked, sometimes strange kind of humour.

His Blofeld is as great as any role he played in this decade. He always delivers 100% and he did too in SP.

It's entirely possible thought that he and Mendes didn't go along very well. As an actor you can never expect to hit it off with every director.

I agree his Blofeld didn't quite hit the mark, but it was still not bad

I don't pop in here much in this thread, but I wanted to share this with you all.

An email newsletter update for September 2016 from David Leigh of The James Bond Dossier website is useful at this time of rumours:

Regarding Bond 25, there is still no news. You may have seen a story claiming that Sony has offered Daniel Craig $150 million to do two more Bond films.

    Forget it.

Sony currently has nothing to do with James Bond, their distribution deal with MGM, the actual studio that part owns the rights to 007 having expired with the release of SPECTRE. The other party that owns the 007 movies rights is Eon Productions through Danjaq.

MGM is looking for a new partner and ultimately may renew with Sony, but at the moment Sony is out of the frame.

Bummer. One rumor I really wanted to be true.

Yes, I feel the same. I'd like to see Craig return to do another two Bond films.

Surely, we will have to get some credible news before October, given that this is his first proper interview since SP.

hopefully the title of the event doesn't imply he's moved on. and he'll have to give some pointers at the very least, since it'll be a year after SP, so they must have at least a rough idea where they're headed with the next one

If he has in fact moved on, I'd prefer if EON give us his replacement's name sooner rather than later. I'd hate for there to be a vacuum for a year or two while they decide who the next man is. This and other threads here will go ballistic.

This is an interesting backstory - how they revealed it would have been curious. It could have been ham fisted - but maybe a PTS - first one without an image of bond since LALD?! Brave stuff - but they could afford themselves some risk after SF's financial success. I think Blofeld will actually benefit from having history behind him after SP's appearance. That's why White's scene in SP works so beautifully - because it is earnt. After history and encounters with Bond that we as an audience have experienced too - in CR and QoS. That exchange of final words and last promises between enemies has weight and significance. It's the same reason M's death in SF works - because it's a character with a history and audience affection and their death has consequences. (Have a look at Superhero franchises that refuse to kill off important characters - and in X-Men's case retroactively bring everyone back to life!)

I think my enjoyment of Spectre would increase knowing it was Craig's last.
  • Waltz is always so refreshingly honest about his performances. I agree that he really didn't get under the skin of Blofeld. I feel that is no mistake of his own. The script underserves the character immensely, it's a shame because they're some interesting touches in the previous drafts (more about Blofeld's illness, his card game with Bond, etc) that would have helped develop the character.

I remember thinking "they can't kill him off" when I first saw Bond walk across the bridge to Blofeld. Mainly because Waltz was so underused.

Anyway, this New York talk is a tad strange.....Craig isn't doing Othello until later into the year. Also the name of it is 'Beyond Bond', could this be his exit interview?

In other news, Aidan Turner has been in full campaign mode at the GQ awards.

Photos are not enough to judge.

I will be fine with either Aidan or Tom as Bond.

Aidan would be a great Bond, I have seen almost all of his work of the last 10 years. The only thing that could be a bit awkward, if he gets announced as Bond, is his part in The Hobbit. I liked seeing him there but to be honest, it was the weakest acting job I have seen of him.

I think anyone who has seen High Rise will welcome Tom Hiddleston as the new James Bond.
    Highly, highly recommended movie!!

I'd simply say that "Bond and Beyond" reflects the questions that will be thrown Daniel's way. The event description relates this idea, as it mentions his biggest hitting work after it discusses his work on Bond, setting an expectation for a good interview in the style of an "Actor's Studio" feature that deeply gets into Dan's life and work.

Hopefully at the very least we come away from this event knowing where his head is at, though I'm sure that EON will have already told him not to share too much, or tease specific things at all. That said, Dan is Dan and we may get that sort of thing anyway.

Actually the event is called "Beyond Bond" which is alot more tentative regarding is to be or not to be Bond in the future. I'm quite certain that we will get a confirmation about Craigs involvement during this interview. It would be difficult for him to talk his way out of a the biggest bloody elephant in the room in a interview on stage like that.

The title could be taken in either direction: he confirms his return and the plans for where they may take the character/series in the near future, or he confirms that he is out, and is discussing the series, why he's leaving, and what's in store for him in his future. Either way, I'm intrigued, as we're likely to get the most concrete information regarding the series in the last year.

On October 7th Daniel Craig will declare that he will direct the new Bond movie starring Tom Hiddleston as James Bond in 2017.
  • Please not Hiddleston for Bond. He's all wrong, far too feminine. He'd be like Brosnan but without the cocky Irish charm.

I could see Turner channelling Dalton - that might work.

@Red_Snow, yes, something along the lines of, "I'm just an actor for Christ's sake, not a high class escort! I've no idea where you're getting those figures from."
