Heyhey fellow Craig-junkie :-P! We love him, don't we :-).

By the way, we share a similar love for Brosnan's 3rd film :-). I still think that it's Brosnan's best outing.

Regarding CR, SF and SP: Fantastic diamonds!

    Thanks, GG.
  • Bibi and Thatcher are both essential to FYEO and partly why I like it so much.

They were both essential in downgrading FYEO for me.

I realize Maggie was a sensation at that time, but her inclusion was undesirable imho. Bibi was a waste of screen time. I would have preferred more of Melina who was sadly underused.

Yes, I thought this way too, until recently. I've since discovered that Bibi was quite a creative addition. Firstly, she is a bit of light relief and plays well with Moore. Secondly, she is a means to address Moore's age, something which has rarely come up. Thirdly, she does, it her gushing way, provide Bond with the necessary information on Kreigler. Bond has to act like he is vying for her affections so she will give up the information. Lastly, she helps Columbo get over the death of the Countess at the end. Nicely done.

Fair points. She does move the plot along certainly. I would have preferred another actress perhaps. Something about Holly Johnson just annoys me to no end (I can appreciate that was the intent, as demonstrated by both Kreigler's and Bond's reaction to her).
  • My rankings...

    1. Casino Royale
    2. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    3. Licence to Kill
    4. Dr. No
    5. Tomorrow Never Dies
    6. The Living Daylights
    7. A View to a Kill
    8. Goldfinger
    9. Diamonds are Forever
    10. Octopussy
    11. Die Another Day
    12. You Only live Twice
    13. For your Eyes Only
    14. Moonraker
    15. The Spy who loved Me
    16. From Russia with Love
    17. Thunderball
    18. Quantum of Solace
    19. Goldeneye
    20. Skyfall
    21. Live and Let Die
    22. The Man with the Golden Gun
    23. The World is Not Enough
    24. SPECTRE

Well that's just how I rank them at the moment. I love them all, although some more than others. The first ten or so are favorites and the rest kinda fall wherever although DAD is a guilty pleasure of mine, I don't think it's so bad, just too ambitious for the amount of effects works needed to make it look more polished and few acting moments that make me cringe. DAD is pure comic book i.e Serpent's Tooth/Video Game Bond on the big screen. It's pure fantasy or the over the top Bond created by Roald Dahl and Lewis Gilbert. Possibly ahead of it's time and foreshadows the rise of the effects heavy comic book films, especially stuff like the MCU films and Nolan Bat-Films. I always felt the Ra's Al Ghul twist and having Bruce in an asian prison in Batman Begins were subtly inspired by some elements of DAD. And there's also some who say The Dark Knight Rises is a remake of TWINE. So it's kinda interesting and ironic that Craig's Bond would take some of the cues from Batman Begins and the whole rebooted universe idea. The whole dark and gritty vs. the fantastical, which is something the Nolan Bat-films did very in well balancing and should return to future Bond films hopefully.

Not a bad ranking, but LALD so low?

I like Live and Let die. It's has some really fun moments and I like the supernatural voodoo elements of the story. The alligator farm and following boat chase are epic. That one just kinda fell near the end as I was going through the list but it's still a solid Bond film. Just not one of my personal top ten faves. On another day I might have placed it higher. Like I said I love all the films.

Top 4 are great, but there are certainly some rather unconventional picks from then on.

I'd be happier with 23 one spot lower, but I'm ok with it where it is.

It's so great, actually watching it again now. QoS came out right before I started to get into researching the Bond movies in great detail, so this was the last movie I went in only seeing trailers and a few pictures in a magazine for, and after CR, it was gonna be tough to beat it, but somehow, it blew me away. Couldn't stop thinking about it, first movie I ever saw five times in cinemas.

Don't think I've posted my slightly amended ranking. The main difference is Spectre is now at the bottom. There are many things I dislike, some things I like, but the score kills it for me

    1. The Living Daylights
    2. Octopussy
    3. Casino Royale
    4. From Russia with Love
    5. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    6. Goldeneye

    7. For Your Eyes Only
    8. The Spy Who Loved Me
    9. Tomorrow Never Dies
    10. Dr No
    11. Moonraker
    12. Diamonds Are Forever
    13. Licence to Kill

    14. You Only Live Twice
    15. A View To A Kill
    16. Goldfinger

    17. The Man with the Golden Gun
    18. Die Another Day (+1)
    19. Thunberball (-1) - I don't know why the change in position. Probably because TB drags.
    20. Live and Let Die

    21. The World Is Not Enough (+1)
    22. Quantum of Solace (+2)
    23. Skyfall (-2)
    24. Spectre (-1)

The last three are splitting hairs but QoS's score and car chase puts it above the other two.

Come on.....QOS, SF and SP all at the bottom? DAD, AVTAK, MR, TMWTGG, YOLT, DAF all higher? What happened with you in 2008 :-P?

Nice ranking!! TLD is also my No.1 and I have Spectre at 23 meanwhile.

It's because in this social-media shithole, that planet Earth is these days, our expectations become insanely high....unrealistically high. Hence the reason SP is, undeservedly, dead last on many lists. Pure utter shame.

We are fans, our expectations are supposed to be unrealistically high. I just think the film has been undeservedly denounced, ripped to shreds on these boards more than it should have been.

Not compared to the Bond fans that were our age in the 1960's...our 1970's. I even don't get why are expectations should be unrealistically high. Why not....realistically high.

It could just be just as simple as a number of fans not liking the film.

Could be. But I doubt it. Topics like these.......also exist because of the constant changes people make in their rankings. My ranking has been firm and exactly the same as 5 months ago.

My rankings are never firm, but move about quite a bit. The top 10 are pretty much fixed, although sometimes 8-10 can change with 11-12. Sometime a low rank film can see a marked improvement, as has happened with DAF for me lately.

I had SP tentatively at 10 originally, as a benefit of the doubt placeholder when I first watched it, but looking back on it now, I realize this was too optimistic. It was actually one of the more disappointing experiences I had in the theatre in 2015, and that perception has actually been reinforced during recent blu ray watches, rather than reversed. I currently have it at 21, a position where it is likely to stay for some time.

Yes, I've firmly put SP in my bottom five since October last year!

I just saw Skyfall last night for the first time all year. It really blew me away all over again - a high water mark for the franchise in recent times. It's too bad it doesn't elicit that kind of sentiment from more people.

Ooowh, it does. Especially with non-Bond-fans :-). Just look at the IMDB rating. It resembles the pleasure people had with CR :-).

It's just the Bond fans themselves....who are still grumpy about SF and who only slowly accept that this Bond film is liked a lot by people who aren't Bond fans :-).

I call that "Out of the box success", and Bond needed that. It also created some new blend of fans.

SKYFALL is a fine Bond film. Some viewings are stronger than others but it stays on or near my top Ten (tends to move between 9 and 11).
Same with me, and with similar rank too.

Skyfall definitely suffers from repetitive viewing fatigue. It's one of, if not, the most visceral Bond films. It shines brightest when viewed without expectations or analysis in mind because it is deeply immersive for those who welcome it in to share its vast treasures. When the senses are triggered through its native visual and audio cues its the very best. Subsequent viewings typically place a level of expectancy that curbs its overall impact just a bit.
  • Skyfall is certainly one of the more atmospheric Bond films. Takes its time as well. I didn't like it at first, but you warm up to the artistry. It now sits comfortably at 7.
