Yeah his work on TV is pretty good plus he's theatrically trained and done numerous stage productions. He has a great look for Bond and age is on his side but I think it would be a mistake and unfair to let those attributes overshadow and obscure his abilities as a capable actor. The man is a more than reasonable candidate to become the next Bond.

Oh he should most definitely audition!
  • I'm sorry to see that these "proposals" are merely based on looks. And even so, Turner doesn't come close to Brosnan's looks, he reminds me more of Connery but without the huge screen presence. Actually, he reminds me of Connery's hairy chest. I've watched a few interviews in which he proved his lack of charisma and humor.

I don't know what this has to do with anything. Plenty of great actors are pretty dull in interviews and press etc, and plenty of mediocre ones are funny and charming offscreen. IMHO whoever's playing Bond SHOULD be a bit aloof offscreen. Connery, Dalton, and Craig were all like this. Brosnan and Moore were more media-friendly charmers. I know whose films I prefer out of that lot.

I've never seen Turner act so I can't legitimately weigh in at this point, but just from the photos, I think he has "it", that X-Factor that doesn't have anything to do with acting ability. This thread has been full of plenty of flavors of the week British actors in tuxedos, but this is the first one I've seen where it looks like it's James Bond standing there. I concur he does look a bit like Brosnan and a bit generically handsome, but there's an element of darkness and danger there.

What he needs is more experience. I say he's definitely a contender.
  • Looks like Aidan is creeping on to the "Who should be the next Bond?" lists, although this one is probably a bit biased as its from Ireland. Still, other than Turner, this is probably the worst list I've ever seen, capped by the fact that they've put a 5"6 guy as their top contender.

As I said in a previous post, If Crag does another film, it will be 5 to 6 years before someone new is cast. His acting ability, or lack of, will be established by then.

I don't know if this was mentioned in this thread, but I came across an article from October in which the GQ British readers voted Luke Evans as the next Bond. He has my vote as well.

And he will then have the right age too. If he is cast in three years for Bond 25 he'd actually have the perfect age, but I am not convinced yet about his acting abilities.

Another actor who played an unmemorable role in The Hobbit! No but more seriously, I liked Evans a lot in The Great Train Robbery, he's a very capable actor, maybe potentially a great one, but I cannot see him as Bond. Something about his face (although on this picture he looks quite good) and his voice. He'd be a bit old when the role becomes available anyway.

Without a specific candidate in mind, has the process for choosing the next Bond begun in earnest? One way or another Craig is closer to the end of his time as Bond than he is to the beginning.

How long Craig stays will determine the choice of his successor, simply because at some point potential Bond actors will be too old.

And am I the only one who hopes Craig coaches the next Bond actor? especially if he is young.

I think every Bond actor secretly wants the next one to fail, but that's just my guess.

Saltzman, of all people, called Connery and offered him LALD after shooting had started.

Connery slammed the phone down on the receiver and exclaimed "They won t even give the guy a chance!"

Yeah, except him, he always seems to have the franchise's best interest at heart. I think Sean thinks he was the best and is relaxed enough not to care anymore. I don't see Dalton being the grouchy type either. Pierce told Daniel to "go for it" because he probably saw no potential in him, like the rest of us and was then jealous of Casino Royale. And we've all seen Daniel being a bit grumpy when talking about Bond lately. To me that felt like he was saying he doesn't want to do another one just to convince or console himself.

@Ludovico In regards to Evans, I think he'd make a different type of Bond indeed. I actually fancy his voice, I think it's distinct, which is always good for Bond. I think he'd be a more elegant choice than Hardy per say. Probably not better than Fassbender, though. I'd prefer him to a lot of younger actors that were thrown in this thread. He also has one of those faces that seems to never age, which is also good.

again I feel I need to point out three factors for Craig

    1. the man still looks incredible

    2. He still wants to do it I believe

    3. We live in a world of Taken other such films with older (50-70) actors being bad asses and doing amazing things. Again watching Bond mature And "age" in the roll and then having a soft reboot after the Craig Era (like AVTAK-TLD) would be fine this of course also means Craig could conceivably be bond for another 6-10 years and of course 3-5 films.

I don't think so. Some sure but I can't think of Roger Moore thinking that. Dalton he had reasons to wish it and Connery was maybe happy they came back begging for him. Brosnan maybe too. But Craig what would make you think that?

The best thing any Bond actor can do (apart from playing the role to the best of his abilities) is to step away from the role before his inevitable decline accelerates.

Sean did that (until they lured him back and his charity beckoned) as did Tim.

The others perhaps should have packed it in sooner.

I hope DC has the good sense to leave before that happens for him. If his heart or body is not in it any more, then please move on no matter how much moola Babs throws at you. The franchise will benefit from it, and the fans will ultimately thank you for it.

A little like pro-sport, knowing the right time to quit is very tough. DC is on the margin, if RM had finished 2 movies earlier, nobody would have argued, but if DC calls it a day, there will be plenty calling for him to do one more. But if its a stinker, everyone will say he should have called it a day after SP. Only he knows whats in his heart.

I agree. It's a very difficult call to make. Part of me wants him to do one more, but that would need to be soon. And it would need to be a really solid movie.

I would also like to add that Bond should not be too old. 50 should be the age limit to play him. He is not like John McClane or Indiana Jones, personified and defined by one single actor, ageing with him. Realistically, his work as an operative would not be carried by an elderly man.

    50 isn't elderly.

Not anymore but it's on its way. It's old for an operative. Over 50 I don't think it makes sense to be Bond. Moore did it but circumstances were different.

I think post-50 is pushing it for Bond as well, especially since they're asking the character to do far more in the way of over-the-top action and stunts than they were back when Connery was making the films.

But, given that they can't seem to get the movies made any quicker than every 3-4 years anymore, I think they're going to have to keep going with them even past the age of 50, assuming that they're holding up, because it just makes sense to get more than 4 films out of each actor who plays the part, since they usually don't settle in and get truly comfortable with the role until, it seems, the third time around.

At some point they will have to cast younger actors (early 30s) as Bond.

It was. I linked to it. And I also linked to articles about Luke Evans being openly gay, which probably isn't a great idea for Bond.

I think that they will, possibly even as soon as the next one. If it weren't for Craig, we were looking at the possibility of actors in their mid-to-late twenties taking over the part for Casino Royale, so it would seem as though EON isn't entirely adverse to going in that direction.

If EON could somehow speed up the amount of time between releases, it could go a long way towards solving the problem of the lead actor aging out of the role before reaching a satisfying conclusion to his tenure, though.

The "problem" is that, in general many people are looking younger longer today. Bond should not look too young; he needs a bit of worldliness to him. A double-0 agent has a bit of experience behind him. I still favor a, give or take a year, 34 to 38 starting point.

I think the challenge is finding an actor young enough to have the role for a while, yet at the same time experienced enough to play the role naturally. Not an easy task.
