Well, quite.
As much as I love Chris Lee (possibly the most charismatic Bond villain ever) that film just feels lazy and uninspired.
I think after that TSWLM was a complete no-brainer: get Rog' to be funny instead of copy Sean + use YOLT's plot + put most of the budget into stunts & the set-building and hey presto = you've pulled the franchise out of the hole that was early 1970's Bond...
Having said that, I, more than anyone else perhaps am very happy that they changed course and made the incredible TSWLM.
Agree. I'm very fond of their idiosyncrasies.
DAF through to TMWTGG was just too much of the same light-weight quirkiness that you allude to. Not to mentioned their cheap look & low production values.
As plenty of others have said before - the series works best when the 'formula' is changed after every other film or so. Without YOLT no OHMSS, without MR no FYEO.
By the same token SP would probably not have felt so invigorating if it had been offered to us in 2006 without the change of approach that the Craig era brought.
As opposed to a proper introduction to SPECTRE, and the actor playing Bond finally getting into his stride and playing the role cooler than cool?
I have no time for YOLT, and had SPECTRE been anything like YOLT I would have hated it.

Had it at No. 2 initially as well. Hope to catch SP a 3rd time on Wednesday. I enjoyed the movie as well. But if I switched my mind into "Type A" mode, I can see where others may not have.
Torn on whether Craig should leave the Bond franchise as is, or complete the SP project. If he can't get the cooperation of Waltz and Seydoux, I think he should ride out with 4.
I do enjoy LALD somewhat, but watching in my recent Bondathon in context with the full series, LALD looks like the cheapest Bond movie ever made. Kananga's "lair" at the end looks like it would be a back room somewhere in Blofeld's YOLT volcano.

That's a tectonic shift in my Bond ranking, because never, ever would I have thought possible that GoldenEye will at one point not be my No 1 Bond movie anymore.
I'm actually still shocked it happened and I do hope I'm not just dreaming :P
Always cool to see fellow fans of GE. Seems to be all over the place in opinion here (but probably more positive than negative)! It has gone up more and more in my ranking over time, now at #4!
My most seen Bonds are TLD, OP, GE, TND
It will be hard to beat those numbers as of course they are all around since decades.
OHMSS is my Christmas movie, I regularly watch it on December 25th or 26th since I got it first on DVD in the late nineties.
Spectre will join the likes of my four most watched. It also will be a record holder in cinema attendance. I certainly will have seen it at least 6 times in the end.
TLD, GE and DAD I have seen 4 times at the cinema. CR and TND and QOS and SF, 3 times each.

TB is No 18.
After two and a half Bondathons this year I really had difficulties to rank the movies in the Top 8.
I played around a bit with it (in Excel) to see how the Top 8 looks if I put OHMSS on top and FRWL second etc.
Objectively speaking I think OHMSS and FRWL are the best Bond movies ever.
But a personal ranking of course isn't merely about objectivity.
TB has once been in my Top 5. How it slowly slipped down to a new low at No 18 escapes me really. I can see it's really good, but I don't feel it anymore. It's such a drag to sit through for me.
Yeah that's a huge drop for your ranking of TB but tastes, attitudes and what you want out if a Bond movie can change when you least expect it. Did you ever think SP will reign supreme at the top of your list?
I can see why TB can be a chore to get through, the under water scenes can really drag and leave one disconnected from the movie but for me, there are too many good things about it to have it remain in my top 5. Connery was supremely alpha, the PTS and ridiculousness of tge jet pack scene, Fiona is my favourite Bond girl,the locations, the overall sexiness of the movie, Largo was a great villain, the SP meeting/execution and so many other things.
That being said I usually talk about my top 6 but right now I'm torn between Dr.No and GE to give it tgat spot.
BTW between 1st and 3rd place. Classic, glamorous, bombastic, orgiastic and quintessential Bond Movie. If Skyfall was a celebration... Spectre is a magniloquent monument of a (Bond) movie.
