    Newman's music is just...there... with the odd realisation that he's scoring a Bond film. Escort the man away from Bond. Please.

    Newman is fine, but I'd like to see someone else to try to bring a better score to Bond
  • People who are saying newman brought something good the table are lying straight through their teeth. He is by far the worst of the bond composers in my list. I see better composing from amateur composers. Newman is an utter joke when it comes to scoring james bond movies. It's like he has no idea on what to do. I gave him to countless chances to write a Full James Bond Theme and what does he do....uses david arnold's arrangement and dont even get me started on the horrific breadcrumbs tracks....gives me the chills and nausea. Secondly he reuses previous tracks from the last movie for Spectre, which the most lazy thing a composer can do. He is clueless when it comes to bond. I hope to god that he is gone after this, he literally ruined the last to bond soundtracks for me for simply not even using the damn bond theme. I heard in countless reports that he didnt even want to use the bond theme....then why in the hell are you choosing to score the film then....idiot. Please for the love of god......GET AWAY FROM THE BOND FRANCHISE NEWMAN.

    I wish they had a twitter account so I could unleash my frustration to them in a professional way. Explain to them what needs to be done since they really don't have a clue on how a proper bond film should be. One qoute i never forgot that Q said, and no it was not in a movie but rather an interview and he said "Bond is pure fantasy." That being said they are making bond to real in the movies these days, like what could and would really happen in real life. That is not Bond. Bond is pure action, locations, Women, Martini's, and the number one most important thing is the BLOODY SOUNDTRACK. If you fail to include one of those key elements you simply do not have a bond film, but simply an action film. That is something the producers of the james bond franchise need to grasp. They keep saying "WE ARE BRINGING BOND BACK TO HIS ROOTS". Yet, they keep failing to deliver. I am really frustrated here. I really wish they would go back to how the Bond films use to be. That is what made them enjoyable for me. In all honesty, I go see the films mainly for the soundtrack, and yes I love the character as well. Bond forever changed my life ever since 1997 when I was introduced to Goldeneye 007 and ever since I became in love with the James Bond franchise. I pray to god that the next film is up to my expectations. I am tired of being let down. I have not enjoyed a bond film since 1999. I have seen all of the films and most of them are very enjoyable. I dislike the rest starting with Die Another Day-Present. I have yet to see Spectre, So I cannot review or rate it. I will hold judgement on November 6th. This felt good getting all of this off my chest. I do love the Bond franchise. I want the best for the series. I wish they would listen to the fans. It would help them make the movie 1000 times better then what they became. I don't dislike Daniel Craig, Mendes. I sincerely dislike Newman. Craig and Mendes did do a decent job with Skyfall and hopefully Spectre but I really want fresh Blood for Bond 25. Newman's Role for spectre was just terrible in every fashion. I don't want to talk about how I felt about his score for Spectre because I would take me longer explaining every flaw about then it took for Newman to compose it. For Bond 25 I want a new director, composer, and above all a new BOND.

    I am a staunch defender of SF's score but after several listens to SP on Spotify I am left feeling disappointed. I do not mind a little bit of recycling in the Bond scores but I think it went a bit overboard here, and if I had bought the SP score I would have felt properly ripped off.

    The worst crime is that there is nothing as memorable as found in the SF score - my favourite tracks on that CD are Brave New World and New Digs, but there is nothing as good in SP.

    Despite this, I enjoyed the score well enough during the film. I have just found myself rather bored when listening to the soundtrack on its own.

    Newman's SP-score was passable, but not memorable. Arnold scored the 1st Daniel Craig Bond movie. He should score his last, as well. Wouldn't mind some of his motifs from CR returning. That would be nice.

    Exactly. The James Bond theme and "007" go hand in hand. Like Binary Sunset and the Imperial March. Both gel well together. Barry never recycled anything or used the same cues from his previous efforts.

    Newman is no Barry undoubtedly (particularly for Bond) but his recycling is not unwarranted thematically, if SP is a follow on from SF.

    It's actually quite original (for the Bond series) to be doing that, as it ties everything together musically, which makes sense given the same team is basically at work here (Craig/Mendes/Newman). A lot of other franchises have done that recently.

    Yes, I have no problem with the reappearance of certain cues and motifs from Newman. Most composers do that with successive sequels in big franchises. I would much rather that than, for example, the way Marvel has butchered the musical continuity for the most part with the MCU.

    Newman's music isn't to my liking with the exception of some segments, but even I think the criticism of him reusing stuff is a bit too much.

    Maybe one day they find somebody like that. Actually I would very much like that Danny Elfman do a bond score.
    Have you people ever listen to his first mission impossible score?
    He would be amazing, he would bring back that Barry style.

    By the way his score for Spectre is a recycling of Skyfall, even picked numbers out of it.

    @TheWizardOfIce is correct. If Mendes walks, so will Newman.

    That said, I find his score for SP very much fitting the film. Can't imagine Arnold's electronics from, say, DAD thrown in the mix. There are some great musical moments in the score that, given some time, people will recognise. Now the school kids have fun ranting on Newman because his contribution was heavily criticised in the SF days as well. Easy target. That said, re-using some cues from the previous film isn't problematic at all. Barry re-used the 007 theme too. Someone threw some Monty Norman in the FRWL score - twice. The music works. But hey, it's a film for grown-ups. I guess some people expect the Bond Theme to play in every scene, even when Bond sits down for an emotional chat with a woman.

    Are you referring to that god awful piece of music used in the climax of DN and when Bond shoots the helicopter pilot in FRWL that sounds like it is from a 40s war film?

    If so I think you just lost the argument about not reusing tracks in Bond scores because that is absolutely dire; the worst track in all of Bond save AWTD and Serra's soporific The Experience of Love.

    The thing is, Barry never reused any music cues. Everytime the 007 theme was used, It was a new original arrangement. One never sounded the same to another. The reused music from Dr. No in FRWL wasn't Barry's decision. He absolutely hated that. He also didn't like then Norman's Bond theme was reused in TB (Depending on which version you have.) YOLT and OHMSS. That wasn't his decision. Barry only reused "007" When it was needed. Nothing else. Every film he scored had a musical identity, He was above recycling his own material and always stayed fresh and original for each outing.

    All the reused cues sound exactly the same from Skyfall and a lot were just taken from Skyfall. It wouldn't be a problem if they were rearranged with different instruments. The final scene from Skyfall in M's office and the final scene in Spectre in Q's lab use the same exact music that turn into Arnold's CR Bond theme arrangement. There was just too much recycled and reused cues that it got distracting and not in a good way. I don't want the Bond theme to play at every turn but Some of the action scenes like the Plane chase would have benefited with a full rendition of the Bond theme
