They wanted to shake up the established formula for LTK and Glen was clearly a part of that establishment. Perhaps someone with a different perspective was needed to tell this very personal story instead of playing it safe again.
I liked that Glen was able to stretch a bit with Dalton's two whilst keeping a certain familiarity with the previous Bonds. But that may just be me.

Well the great Bond movies have often baffled conventional minds.

    ;)

Don't worry @Birdleson, I feel the same about QOS.
    But that's for another thread.
Remember the views in this thread are for John Glen films only, therefore OP is likely to score fairly highly. To the average fan, OP often appears around the middle of the pack. Not too many like me who rank it top 5 and above.

OP is firmly in my top 10. Absolutely one of my favourite Bonds. But I'm also a big QoS fan as well. To me, they represent the best of both ends of the Bond spectrum - slightly daft, highly entertaining, light-hearted romps, and taut, fast-paced, thriller. OP trumps QoS for me though. One of Rog's best performances. Good villains and locations. Actually some real moments of high tension and drama. And I love the clown suit.

OP is undeniably one of the more entertaining films in the franchise - from start to finish, and it sports excellent performances and a superb score. Everyone back on top of their game to fend of Connery's challenge.

Octopussy is a film that gets bashed for it's cheesy moments. The film as a whole is quite Fleming with a good cold war plot, greats efforts from Barry, Glen

I remember reading somewhere that without connery all the crew had to step up their game with OHMSS.

I agree with you ...I enjoyed both OP and QS.

Take out the tennis and tiger sound effects and I would've been happier.

So if the majority feel a certain way, that opinion becomes set in stone? How do you explain films that gain a following overtime? were they worse films before people agreed they were good and that made them better? I don't understand.

It's not set in stone no. But it makes it further towards a concensus coming from people 'in the know'.

    Octopussy
    The Living Daylights
    For Your Eyes Only
    A View to a Kill
    Licence to Kill

Never have been a huge fan of the Glen films, they all rank somewhere in my bottom half.

Here is the average ranking in the rank the Bond films thread:

    1 TLD
    2 FYEO
    3 LTK
    4 OP
    5 AVTAK

John Glen himself thinks LTK is the best film he directed personally.

Interesting that he would say that, as his direction is at its most pedestrian in that film, which is saying something.

Personally I think the script and story is better than his other entries though.

Overall I tend to agree, but it's so close for me. Barry tips the scales just enough in TLD's direction though.

It's almost as if it was a different director directing the Dalton films as opposed to the Moore ones. I LOVE both TLD and LTK and can only imagine how much better they could have been if another director had helmed them. And I know Dalton felt the same way.

    How do you know that?

Has Dalton ever been quoted as saying this????
  • John Glen also said that although LTK was the best Bond film that he directed, he said that Octopussy was his favourite. An interesting distinction and one that I can fully understand.

Do you know where John Glen said that? Never heard that one, but am more than happy that he gives the often underrated gem that is Octopussy such accolades.

I don't know how old is this post, but I feel compelled add my five cents.

    1) LTK
    2) TLD
    3) FYEO
    4) OP
    5) AVTAK

I must say that I re-watched AVTAK few days ago and found it tremendously entertaining. All in all I'm a fan of the Glen era, although I must confess that I feel a little frustrated with the cartoonish excesses of OP, as I feel that it prevents this classic bond flick from being a classic espionage film altogether (let's not fool ourselves, a lot of it's foolishness can only be tolerated by bond fans) as opposed to casino royale that can be enjoyed even by non Bond fans. That being said, LTK is my second favorite Bond movie altogether (the first one being Casino Royale) and I do feel that Skyfall is a little overrated (I could have done without the past references. OK to make a darker Bond but do we have to go from light espionage/adventure flick to the Dark Knight??). As for my appreciation of LTK I may be a little biased since it was my first bond movie seen on big screen when I was 8. Pretty impressive for a kid lol. FYEO fells a little odd in the Moore canon since it's seriousness is quite striking between moonraker and OP. That's one of the reasons I enjoy it so much.
