Before everyone gets excited about a "winter Bond film", don't forget that it is possible that only the PTS will feature these snowy locations. It is not unlikely that the main storyline will take place in Rome + Morocco.

And how much of these news are genuine and not glorified rumours?

I wish a lot of them were true and I'd LOVE a snowy Bond film. But for now there is little evidence.

Apart from the fact hotels have been booked and sets are being built.

    Okay, okay, I'll shut up.

Another image of Daniel with Mark Strong. Is this an indication of his hair for B24?

In all honesty......why do I think of Blofeld when I look at these pictures?

Any news about what goes on in Pinewood (backlot or stage)? If they go "Ken Adam", they should have begun work as of now, right?
  • Oh no, not another comment about the hair?! I presume you mean Craig's? Briefly, no. We're still over a month away from filming and he would have it at least trimmed to style before and during filming I would imagine.

Another thought, OK - Mark Strong poses in one photo. Coincidence. Mark Strong poses in two, three photos? With DC? Hmm. Either there's some serious fanboy stuff going on, or they've let a major cat out of the bag.

These are great news! I've been away for a couple of days and I can't believe how much we know already. The photos of the Austrian locations look spectacular. So, one of them will double for Norway but the other I'm sure will be Austria. Perhaps they are optimizing resources by having two nearby shooting locations.

Regarding Strong, it might be nothing but it might mean a lot. I personally love him as an actor. I do wish he will be an ally and not the villain, although everyone knows how he excels at villlainous roles.

It would be typecasting for Mark Strong, if he is in the movie and plays a villain, but I would still see him more as a villain than Ejiofor.

Agree. And the prize for least creative casting goes to.....B24.

I thought after Bardem and the billion dollar haul we were shopping in the premier league for villains now?

And despite an Oscar nomination Ejiofor and Strong are distinctly championship level.

Would prefer Strong though of the two as although hes played a villain so often he is still pretty good. Ejiofor is a reasonable actor but I'm afraid he just leaves me pretty underwhelmed.
  • Strong has become such a stock English-villain character over the last few years. If he is the baddie in Bond 24; he is a rather uninspired choice.

Personally, I think Mendes knows this and for this reason will not cast him as the bad guy in Bond 24. Personally, I think Strong will most likely play an ally to 007 in the film. For instance, Fiennes was known for playing villainous roles akin to Strong and his casting in Skyfall deliberately plays against the audience's preconceived notion that Fiennes will likely turn out to be the villain in the end.

Strong as Blofeld with Efijor as a Largo, Klebb type SPECTRE member? Probably not but I can dream. It's great that Mark Strong is in it anyway, whether he's playing a villain or not, he's a great actor that we're lucky to have.

@TheWizardOfIce You might not like him but Efijor is definetely Premier League right now. He just won a Bafta and got an Oscar nom. Casting him would definetely be a continuation of SF in terms of casting great, accomplished actors.

Although saying that I don't see why it matters how big they are. Some of the best actors I can think of mostly do TV work (David Morrisey and Christopher Eccleston for example) and I still think Robert Davi (an underrated character actor, not an Oscar winning A listsr) is the best Bond villain. I don't think it matters how big they are or how many awards they've won or how famous they are, what matters is how well they play the part. Mark Strong might have been type cast as baddies recently but he's still a great actor so chances are if he is playing the villain he'd do well.

We had some Oscar winners on board in SF but that doesn't mean we should disqualify anyone who isn't a famous award winning actor from playing a Bond villain because for all we know some unknown actor could end up being the best one.

Typecasting isn't necessarily a bad thing, uninspired maybe but does that necessarily mean the results will be poor?

Yes making Strong an ally would be more original but seeing both Craig and him verbal sparring on screen as adversary would definitely be a delicious proposition.

As for Efijor he's definitely A list now, his performance in 12 Years was incredible and he's delivered in other areas although I'm thinking that boat has sailed, Strong does look like a possibility but it might just be a coincidence or unintended misdirection.

I do think EON, Mendes & Craig will be looking for a great actor after Bardem in actor for Bond 24 big bad but Strong isn't someone I would be protesting about if he got the role although it does seem a bit obvious, why not Craig up against another Our Friends colleague, Eccleston would make a great villain?

@TheWizardOfIce You might not like him but Efijor is definetely Premier League right now.

Is he really though? Are people really going to see a film because it has his name on the poster? I honestly doubt that.

Javier Bardem cast as a Bond villain excites people.

    Chiwetel Ejiofor doesnt.

His body of work cant really be compared to a Bardem or a Day Lewis (and before you say it yes I know he will never do it) can it? He has won an award for a film which is automatically going to win awards due to its subject matter. Apart from that his CV is fairly ordinary. I think hes a capable enough actor and dont get me wrong I wont be utterly devastated if he is the villain and he could turn out to be fantastic - who knows. Its just that after Bardem I'm feeling a bit underwhelmed if he gets the gig.

I've been saying for years and years (since before Craig was Bond) that Eccleston would be a fantastic Bond villain. He's an amazing actor that has played loads of completely different roles and nailed all of them, he's a big Bond fan and he's worked with Craig before.

But if he was cast then some people on here would probably complain because he hasn't won an Oscar 8-|

I do agree with you here. Mark Strong and/or Chiwetel Ejiofor do not have the "brand recognition" and fame that Javier Bardem has. I said on many occasions that also for Bond 24 the screenplay should be tailored around the wishes of certain big Oscar-heavy actor names. It really created a benchmark for "Skyfall".

But it are still rumours. So let's wait a bit for what. Regarding locations, news is much better and steadily changes rumours into facts.....:
And that we don't know yet. I kinda hope it will be a significant part of the film.
Given the brevity of the shoot in Obertillach I dont think we're going to be talking OHMSS length of Alpine scenes. I'd settle for similar to Cortina which featured for a solid half an hour of the film.

The main thing is that the the action sequence is up to scratch with no CGI and is woven organically into the narrative. The TWINE was so randomly tacked on and then when the action did come it was such a damp squib.

But what Sölden, for which the Rettenbachferner glacier will be used?

Yes but thats just a ski slope that will be used for the action scenes. But you cant have 40 minutes of the film on the side of a mountain. Unless I suppose theres some sort of Piz Gloria building which is filmed at Pinewood. But then the whole things getting a bit too derivative of OHMSS isnt it?

@TheWizardOfIce: Have you seen the first on-set-picture? The production design crew is constructing, what seems to be, a big house in Obertilliach. It could become a big mountain villa/log cabin. So, already sets that can actually be created at the Pinewood lot, are build on location in Austria. That must tell you something.

Also several hotels have been rent out for cast & crew in Tirol, Austria, including the Dolomitengolf Resort in East-Tirol and the Grand Hotel Lienz. Now, usually EON is not booking this stuff for just the cast. You can use fully-loaded trailers for that. I remember back in 2005 EON booked the wunderful Grand Hotel Pupp in Karlovy Vary (which later turned out to be the Hotel Splendide), and that wasn't just for the cast as we know now.

So let's have a look at the hotels that are booked by EON Productions, according to http://www.kleinezeitung.at/nachrichten/leute/kaernten/3751118/bond-film-flugzeug-nimmt-kurs-osttirol.story:

Grandhotel Lienz, Lienz, East-Tirol, Austria (5 stars):

Well guys, this could very well be a hotel that will be used in the storyline/plot of Bond 24. Such a wunderful beautiful hotel will not just be used for crew. Just have a look at the pictures. It has got the "grandeur" and elegance of previous Bond hotels, like Splendide ("Casino Royale") and Hotel Palacio ("On Her Majesty's Secret Service"). And looking at the interior design it has got the warmth of a true alpine hotel.

The hotel has got a 27-hole golf course, which in summer is used extensively by the more.......upper class tourists. Actually, the golf course is the biggest in Tirol. Could it be that Bond will be playing golf also :-)?

@TheWizardOfIce? So besides Obertilliach (where construction of a big house takes place, perhaps villain's lair), Sölden (Rettenbachferner glacier, for skiing), you can also add Lienz (Grandhotel Lienz) and Lavant (most likely used for crew, but it has a wunderful 27-hole golf course) to the list of Austrian locations.

Now I also have a question for @JamesPage. Do you pursue some research journalism on MI6-HQ as well? Isn't it possible to....give a sweet call to Grandhotel Lienz and Dolomitengolf Resort....just to confirm IF and WHEN these hotels are booked by a "big film crew"? You seem to be inferring an awful lot from the fact EON have reserved some hotels. Just because you think the hotels are opulent enough to be in a Bond film doesnt mean they arent just places for the cast and crew to stay so I dont really see how you can conclude 'you can also add Lienz and Lavant to the list of Austrian locations.'

I am just basing my conclusion that Austrian scenes dont appear to be that extensive on the fact that it has been stated that Obertilliach will only be used for 3 days of filming. The production was on location at Murren for months so in terms of prospective screen time it hardly seems likely that the Austrian scenes will be comparable in duration to the scenes in OHMSS.

  • edited September 2014 Posts: 11,119
You are right off course @TheWizardOfIce. But it's worth posting some information on those hotels. Even if they aren't used extensively, they still could be used for the crew. The Austrian newspaper "Kleine Zeitung" most likely did some research on that (as MI6-HQ editor you could verify that).

Small or big: Even you are assuming things about the extensiveness of the use of Austrian locations, Austria WILL be used as location for Bond 24. "On the fact that it has been stated that Obertilliach will only be used for 3 days of filming" could also refer to the days that 2nd unit will be filming there.

Fact is: There has been a lot going on in Austria lately. Let me put it like this. MI6-HQ used the actual information from JamesBond.de and KleineZeitung.at about Obertilliach. So suddenly Obertilliach is dead certain for -only- 3 days of filming, if they are constructing something big onsite? Why should MI6-HQ not refer to Die Kleine Zeitung as well, wenn this newspaper also mentions the fact that cast and/or crew WILL stay in Grandhotel Lienz and Dolomitengolf Resort Lavant? And why not using the source from Die Kleine Zeitung that crew will be filming on the Rettenbachferner Glacier?

For me, it is all news at the moment. And as we are no journalists, but merely fans, there's nothing wrong with assuming a lot at this point ;-). That's what forums are for.....

  • right now, as far as I know, the 2 mentioned hotels will only be used as accommodation for the main cast and producers etc.. I've got no information that they will also be used for filming. Maybe I can do some research on that in the next few day, but anyway, I don't think they would confirm anything... ;)

Hmm, so the hotels won't be used for the (production) crew, but only for cast? In any case, during on set filming usually expensive trailers/caravans are being used. I find it slightly weird if Grandhotel Lienz will not be used for an actual filming location. In the past, crew/cast were housed in different hotels...that at least were much more modern.

Perhaps therefore Dolomitengolf Resort, Lavant will the actual housing for cast/crew during filming.

Also, usually when you do some proper research journalism, you can expect two answers in these cases where secrecy about movie filming is involved:

    A) "No, it is not true. Allthough we would welcome the Bond crew at our place"
In such a case it's definately a "No", thereby confirming rumours of being untrue.

    B) "I am very sorry, but at this moment we can not confirm your question" or "Sorry, we can not comment to that"
In such a case, the answer is most likely a "Yes" :-). So, just give Grand Hotel Lienz a call and see what answer you are getting.

Those images above look absolutely stunning. I sincerely hope the hotels are used in some capacity within the movie because they're just too beautiful to be resigned for staff accommodation only. With the subject matter of austerity having been brought up for SF's production, shelling out cheddar on such luxurious and lavish - Bond esque living for the crew and to not get any or less wonderment shown on film is unacceptable And misguided considering the expenditure of QoS and the whole MGM's restructuring. I don't care if SF made 1.1billion; show me the money on film!

Just a quick recap of the busy two months we've been having :)

    August of 2014
-Baz Bamigboye reports that the rewrite is substantially different than Logan's original submission. Everyone involved excited to begin filming. It is also reported that Mendes practically begged Purvis & Wade to return after having 'a lot of making up to do.'
-A Norwegian article claims that a group of islands in Norway were being considered for filming, but were scrapped after the Purvis & Wade rewrite. The article claims some negotiations are under way to still film in the country.
-More rumors (page 196) of the Austrian Alps surface after plans for Norway were scrapped.
-David Arnold tweets to user @marketto007 "as it's Sam Mendes again it'll be Tom Newman too" when asked about his possible return for Bond 24.
-The Sun reports that Daniel Craig will take to the slopes for a skiing sequence.
-A German publication claims that a ski sequence is set to shoot in Obertillach, Austria in a production-built village. Daniel Craig will be a part of the shoot for 3 days in January.
-The Knowledge further reports rumors of a skiing sequence, and claims the first day of filming for Bond 24 is December 1st, 2014.
-The market town of Osttirol in Austria is considered for one of the snowy locations for Bond 24, according to the Salzburger Nachrichten.
-James Bond Radio reports that Debbie McWilliams, Casting Director for Bond 24, sent out a casting call for "an imposing extremely physically fit actor" around the height of 6'2" with a very unusual appearance to play the role of an iconic henchman.
    September of 2014
-Baz Bamigboye reports that principle photography on Bond 24 will begin December 6th, 2014, following a full cast read-along of the script in late November. Expect the press conference to fall between late November and December 6th.
-HitFix reports that Hoyte van Hoytema has indeed been tipped as the next cinematographer for Bond 24.
-Skyfall Sound Editor Per Hallberg returns for Bond 24.
-Previously rumored English actress Joanne Froggat dodges questioning of a Bond 24 screentest.
-Morocco has been confirmed as a loctation for Bond 24, and shooting is to take place for ~15 days, via MI6.
-Hotel accommodations and set construction confirm Obertilliach as a shooting location, and rumors are that it may double for Norway.
-MI6 reports that there may be a plane crash sequence filmed in an Austrian location, which was later elaborated on with details of two planes being used for filming.
-Actor Mark Strong has appeared in multiple photos alongside Daniel Craig in Morocco, while the Bond actor is location scouting. Rumors of Strong's involvement with the production are unsubstantiated, and he is currently part of a film shoot in Northern Africa.

Well, to be honest we do not know if any of them will be cast yet. They did used actors typecast as villains in the past, but after the last three movies (heck, after the last six, regarding of their respective quality) they did not typecast for their main villains. So Strong would be unimaginative in comparison. Still, he a capable actor and he looks nastier than Ejiofor. Who is too good looking, too young looking (again, Strong has the right maturity), too nice looking for my taste. Granted, the proper makeup could make wonders, but still.

I still think it will be Ejiofor, but I secretly hope that Mendes will get Simon Russell Beale out of his hat.

Have we discussed this casting call yet? UniversalExtras is based out of Pinewood and the call is for a John Logan film.

The only John Logan script in production is Bond 24.

Ejiofor certainly does not have the same cv as Bardem. Heck, I think he'd be lightweight in comparison with the casting of villains in all previous Craig movies. He is still young to be labeled a veteran actor, something I find important for the actor playing the villain. Since the movie will take place in Austria and/or Scandinavia, why not cast a Northern European actor? It would be a nice contrast after the Hispanic Bardem.
