Agreed. Plus there is the underwater scene with the JIM diver and the subsequent keelhauling sequence plus Bond being stalked by Locke and Claus in Cortina and Locke's car perched atop the cliff.

Actually, FYEO may be one of the most suspenseful Bond films of the all.

I know I'm a bit late but I'll fill out DAD/MR for fun!

    PTS: Die Another Day
Title Track: Moonraker (..if anyone picked DAD..)
    Title Credits: Moonraker
    Main Villain: Moonraker
    Main Bond Girl: Moonraker
    Overall Plot: Moonraker
    Dialogue: Moonraker
    Score: Moonraker

    Minor Characters: Die Another Day

    Ally: Die Another Day

11-6 in favor of Moonraker. Interesting (For all its flaws I quite like DAD) as they are side by side in my rankings.

    Now for the current "battle."

PTS: Licence to Kill (not even close)
Title Track: For Your Eyes Only
    Title Credits: Licence to Kill
    Main Villain: Licence to Kill
Main Bond Girl: For Your Eyes Only

Now that you mention it, yes, I'd definitely agree! Kristatos' torture of Bond and Melina is also a very suspenseful scene- a first time viewer would be left wondering how Bond would devise a method of escape, since no handy-dandy Q gadget is available at his disposal.

PTS: FYEO - Flying with Remote Control Airways is more exciting than going plane fishing with the coast guard.
Title Track: LTK - I don't mind FYEO, but the full length version of LTK is a fave of mine.
Title Credits: FYEO - LTK is pretty generic. At least FYEO had a water theme and the first and only time (IIRC) the artist was seen.
Main Villain: LTK - Kristatos was bland. Sanchez was more interesting, he had a sense of humour and a code of loyalty.
Main Bond Girl: LTK - I like Melina- she could hold her own, but Pam is more my type.
Overall Plot: FYEO - Back to pure espionage. Get the McGuffin before the enemy. Add in a revenge plot for the Bond girl.
Dialogue: LTK - 'I love James so much' beats 'put your clothes on for icecream'. Just.
Score: FYEO - Love the Conti post-disco score. Pretty underrated here, I think.
Settings: FYEO - Spain, Cortina, Greece- can you get more exotic than this?
Action: FYEO - Helicopter PTS, 2CV chase, skiing, JIM diver fight. It's all there. LTK probably has more action, but FYEO has more variety of action.
    Humor: LTK
    Cinematography: FYEO
    Benign Bizarre: LTK
    Suspense: LTK
Minor Characters: LTK - Dario, Krest, Killifer, Sharkey > Bibi, Kriegler, Luigi.
    Glamor: LTK
Ally: LTK - Hedison's Felix just edges Topol's Columbo.

    FYEO: 7
    LTK: 10

Interesting score. I favour FYEO ever so slightly. Both are top films.

Title Track: LTK (FYEO has always underwhelmed me)
Title Credits: FYEO (I'm not a fan of either, nor am I a fan of how Sheena Easton is shown in the credits, but LTK has the most copypasted titles in the series)
Main Villain: LTK (Kristatos is a great villain. He gets way too much flack when he was really a groundbreaking villain for the series. But Sanchez is the best villain in the whole series, so obviously he trumps here.)
Main Bond Girl: FYEO (Most beautiful Bond girl ever IMO.)
    Overall Plot: LTK
Dialogue: FYEO (I concede that LTK is too American-ized in its' first half)
Score: LTK (Conti's is possibly the worst Bond score ever.)
    Settings: FYEO
Action: LTK (The tanker chase alone takes the win, nevermind the seaplane sequence)
    Humor: FYEO
    Cinematography: LTK
    Benign Bizarre: LTK
    Suspense: FYEO
Minor Characters: LTK (Bibi makes FYEO lose here)
    Glamor: FYEO
Ally: FYEO (Columbo is possibly the best ally ever.)

    9-8 for LTK. Well-fought, FYEO.

PTS: FYEO (as someone else said, Moore visiting Tracey's grave was a nice touch).
    Title Track: FYEO
Title Credits: FYEO (LTK's are pretty poor in my view).
    Main Villain: LTK
Main Bond Girl: LTK (I like Melina the character but I think Boquet is a tad wooden).
Overall Plot: FYEO (a more Fleming-esque espionage story).
Dialogue: FYEO (Nice that they used a line directly from the LALD novel)
Score: FYEO (yes its dated but I think its soothing and easy to listen to - especially some of the more romantic tracks).
    Settings: FYEO
    Action: LTK
    Humor: FYEO
    Cinematography: FYEO
    Benign Bizarre: LTK
Suspense: FYEO (the keel-hauling sequence, Moore being shot at on the ski slope and the rock climbing scene...not to mention him killing Loque).
    Minor Characters: LTK
    Glamor: FYEO
    Ally: FYEO

    12-5 FYEO.

Good to see some Moore love from u, @BAIN123. ;)

I've seen bits of Moore's films recently on TV. I genuinely like him in some films...but find him annoying/unconvincing in others. He's ranked as my 3rd favourite Bond at the moment.

    LALD - Like
TMWTGG - Not like (as much)
    TSWLM - Like
MR - Not like (as much)
    FYEO - Like
    OP - Like
    AVTAK - Not like
  • Your ratings seem as good as any @BAIN123. Any finals votes on the first and last films o the 80s?
  • PTS: FYEO (Love the Tracy's grave bit, could have done without Blofeld, but I do die laughing each time I see it.)
Title Track: LTK (Just barely wins this one, simply for the fact that LTK get's stuck in your head, FYEO doesn't for me)
Title Credits: FYEO (As others said, LTK's is bland)
Main Villain: LTK (Sanchez, nuff said)
Main Bond Girl: LTK (Pam is one of the best while imo, Melina is not)
    Overall Plot: FYEO
    Dialogue: FYEO
    Score: FYEO
    Settings: FYEO
    Action: FYEO
    Humor: FYEO
    Cinematography: FYEO
    Benign Bizarre: LTK
    Suspense: FYEO
    Minor Characters: LTK
    Glamor: FYEO
    Ally: LTK

12-6 For Your Eyes Only (Honestly I think FYEO is probably a mid ranking Bond film, and while I like bits of LTK it would probably be pretty low on my list.
  • I think the rock climbing scene in FYEO is one of those rare nail biting scenes that have you on the edge of your seat even though you know Bond can't die. It is just how he is going to get out of this one...

Most exciting scene in the franchise.

Action: License to Kill (Tough call. Bond's winter sports getaway in FYEO and water skiing getaway in LTK both immediately come to mind as awesome action scenes.)
    Humor: License to Kill
    Cinematography: For Your Eyes Only
Benign Bizarre: For Your Eyes Only
Suspense: For Your Eyes Only (Another tough call. All of LTK is basically suspense thriller with Bond's mind games with Sanchez, but FYEO has scenes that are more suspenseful on an individual basis.)
Minor Characters: For Your Eyes Only
    Glamor: For Your Eyes Only
Ally: License to Kill (Only because Q can be considered an ally in this one, since he shows up in the field, and Q trumps about any other possible ally.)

    License to Kill - 8
For Your Eyes Only - 9

These were some especially tough calls. Neither movie cracks my list of favorites or worsts. Both are solid entries. I'd say LTK has aged better, while FYEO has more of the classic Bondian elements, so FYEO takes this one by a hair.

If anything i would say Bond's ally in LTK is Q.
  • Oh come on, it's Sharkey, although seriously I think both Felix and Q could count. I especially love Q in this movie, one of the better Q scenes in the series!

Agreed. The main ally is the one that usually gets killed (ala Kerim, Tibbet, Quarrel).

Allies are always a grey area, unlike villains and Bond girls. I think the role of the ally has somewhat been reduced since the earlier films. I still, for the life of me, can't distinguish a true ally in Die Another Day. Some say Raoul, for the very little scenes he has? Kincaide was even't introduced until very late in Skyfall.

I think in some films Bond just doesn't really have an ally or at least not one who serves much purpose.
