Okay, this is inevitable. But if you compare 'Man Of Steel' with 'Batman Begins'. What movie is the better reboot?

I shall quote myself again, because I'm still curious :-P.

People aren't bothered by the mixed critical reaction to the film. MOS is predicted to get around 120 million dollars opening in the US. Looks like it's going to be a huge worldwide hit too. Man of Dollars! ;)

Shocking, truly awful movie. I thought Batman & Robin/DAD could never be beaten in terms of gutter trash, but Man of Steel has happily knocked them both off for the Number. 1 spot.

This really is a bad, bad film. The action is meaningless, the characters I didn't care about, the flimsy rumour of a story has a `making it up as we go along' type attitude, characters like Lois Lane suddenly gets caught in the action, in a laughably bad sequence where she interacts with the ghostly Jor-El.

This was the first film since DAD that I have seen at the cinema and was ready to walk out half way through, in a mixture of disgust and downright boredom.

Given this 1/10 is being too kind. Man of Steel is one of the worst films ever made! Period!

I thought it was a pretty good movie. Super entertaining, at the least, which is all I really ask for from a movie like this.

I agree with a few of the complaints that @jetsetwilly made, most definitely. The characters weren't developed well at all, and the movie really did feel like it was stumbling along plot-wise.

That being said the action and much of the cinematography were top-notch, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

It honestly is remarkable though, how literally everyone either loves it or hates it! I can't think of another movie where peoples opinions are so split

    I loved it. :D
Gonna see it again with my dad real soon.

If I had to guess it would be comparing it to Batman & Robin. :D

    Tomatometer: 56%
Average Rating: 6.3 out of 10 (Fresh: 121 reviews, Rotten: 94 reviews)
Average review description: Superman's return to the big screen is mostly successful, as Man of Steel provides enough exhilarating action and spectacle to overcome its occasional detours into generic blockbuster territory.

    RATINGS AT METACRITIC.COM:

It seems It's by no means a typical Christopher Nolan-film; it's not carrying the creative quality from the man. I haven't seen the film yet, but it saddens me to read things like 'joyless blockbuster that's only about the action and special effects'. It doesn't have the political/social relevance Nolan truly injected in his Batman films. But it also lacks the Bond-esque humour and charm portrayed by Robert Downey Junior in 'Iron Man'.

I think the problem could be director Zack Snyder. He isn't my favourite director. His movies, like 'Watchmen' and 'Sucker Punch' were just plain bores for me. Sorry to say this. For Nolan itself this must have been a hasty writing job. And it's also sad to see WB skillfully used Nolan's name for marketing purposes. Which obviously works money-wise. But the quality of the film is another story.

I truly expected a Batman Begins-like reboot of the Superman franchise. I guess so far I was wrong. I will judge myself next week.....

There is a reason why films like BB and TDK get such high ratings on RT, along with quality movies like SF, and why this film is struggling in the mid 50% region. It really is a bad film.

This shambles is light years away from Nolan's Batman reboot, and the Bond reboot. This piece of stinking garbage does something I didn't think would be possible. It actually makes Superman Returns look great.

Both my wife and I were ready to walk out of the cinema half way through, utterly bored out of our brains. Like I said earlier, I've only been tempted to do this with one other movie - DAD.

    Utter, utter crap.

I was a little disappointed by it too (I rated it 7 but its probably more of a 6) however I wouldn't be that harsh on it. Personally I think Kermode's review is dead on, its not as meaty or punchy as the Batman flicks (the first two particularly). There were a few good scenes and Russell Crowe is enjoyable but it did feel a bit...meh to me.

There's WAYYY too much action/CGI also.

Plus, is it me or does Henry Cavil look like an even prettier version of a certain Irishman? ;)

  • I feel like Nolan's involvement has been overemphasized throughout the production. Make no mistake, this is VERY much a Zack Snyder movie.

Good opening numbers but I wonder what the word of mouth will be like in coming weeks. Mixed is the word of the week for this. Zack Snyder indeed. Was he the first choice to direct this film I wonder.

Personally, thought it was brilliant, the special effects were slightly overused (but brilliant and looked as realistic as can be.) and the ending battle scene could have been cut down by about 3 or so minutes. I don't know how people can say the characters are underdeveloped, they get enough talking time and character building time in the scenes not involving action (trust me, the critics over exaggerate about too much action.) Shame it didn't get good reviews, because it was great, worth watching, everyone was brilliant in their role. Not a waste of money at all.

Three minutes?! The whole third act needed some serious trimming in my opinion. Don't kill me, just my view.

@jetsetwilly I don't think it looks very good but it can't be as bad as Batman and Robin.

I can see some similarities with this and Die Another Day though (keep in mind I'm basing this off reviews however so my opinion doesn't mean much).

Bad character development, too much CGI, mixed reviews from critics while fans are more positive (I wonder if, like DAD, fans opinions will change over time?), etc.

Like I said. Nolan's name was overemphasized purely for marketing purposes. The directorial execution counts here....and that's what makes the movie bad.
